Tualatin Woman Dies in Crash East of Astoria

A Tualatin-area woman died and two other people were injured.

(ASTORIA, Ore.) - Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the investigation into Friday afternoon's two vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 202 about three miles east of Astoria. A Tualatin-area woman died and two other people were injured.

Updated information from OSP Sergeant Andrew Merila indicates on September 17, 2010 at approximately 4:25 p.m. a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 18-year old Ian C. Anderson of Astoria, was westbound on Highway 202 near milepost 5 negotiating a curve when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with two adult female occupants.

After impact, the Volkswagen traveled off the shoulder and the Ford Explorer Sport Trac went down an approximate 20-foot embankment into the brush.

Erickson was transported by Medix Ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria with non-life threatening injuries.

The Ford's passenger, 54-year old Deborah Lynn Cardwell of Tualatin, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Ford's driver, 55-year old Robyn Marie Carson of Tualatin, was trapped inside and had to be extricated by fire personnel for transport to a Legacy Emanuel Hospital with serious injuries.

OSP troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Highway 202 was closed by ODOT between milepost 4 and 7 for about four hours. A detour was established around the scene.

Clatsop County Sheriff's Office, ODOT, Lewis & Clark Rural Fire Department and Olney-Walluski Fire District personnel assisted at the scene.
