Troy Davis: Calling for Clemency

(ATLANTA) - I am writing to you from Atlanta, from the mist of a full-out clemency campaign. Troy Davis (a man on Georgia's death row despite a compelling case of innocence)  is slated to be executed on Wednesday at 7pm. His clemency hearing in front of the Georgia Board of Pardons & Parole is on Monday.

The worldwide mobilization that has taken off in support of Troy has been overwhelming. Yesterday, I witnessed the deliver of petitions with more than 650,000 signatures to the Board of Pardons and Parole. There were also letters signed by 3,300 members of the clergy, 1,500 legal professionals, 26 former death row inmates who have been exonerated, and over 50 family members of murder victims. The same underlying message to the Board was emphasized in each letter: there is too much doubt to execute.

I hope you will take part today in the Day of Global Solidarity for Troy. Please check www.JusticeForTroy.org for information about an event in your community. Here in Atlanta, we expect to be 1,000 strong as we march to Ebenezer Baptist Church (where Martin Luther King Junior once preached) for an evening of prayer, reflection, music and witness.
