(PORTLAND, Ore.) - As a result of a consolidated effort by the Regional Sheriff's Offices from Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill counties, 37 DUII drivers were arrested and taken off of the region's roadways during the Labor Day weekend. Deputies from the four Sheriff's Offices in the region worked extra shifts from Friday, September 4th to Monday September 7th, in an attempt to make the roads safer for holiday travelers. Although some crashes were reported involving DUII drivers, there were no fatalities reported in the four-county area. The Regional Sheriff's Offices continue their coalition this week with a concerted effort toward school safety traffic enforcement, mainly concentrating on speed enforcement in school zones and safe driving near school busses. See the attached news release for more details. The elected office of the Sheriff is unique. By statute it is responsible for several critical areas of responsibility for public safety, including operating a jail, search and rescue, waterway protection, and civil services. Each sheriff's office also has resources necessary to meet other law enforcement needs that benefit the citizens of each county, including people who live inside incorporated cities.
