(SALEM, Ore.) - Just enough rain to keep it fresh, and all the games, rides, food and entertainment kids young and old could hope for were on the agenda Sunday. A state fair to remember. Parking at the fair was free this year, helping offset the costs for families who visited from all over Oregon and beyond. Most of all the fair is about kids. And every age every size, and every type made it and had a fantastic time enjoying the many things to see and do. Whatever activity they chose, they all seemed to be having a great time enjoying the final days before the start of another school year. A trip around memory lane, or the making of memories anew is what staples like the carousel are guaranteed to bring to happy riders. For some, certain favorite foods are a must at the fair. The sights and smells come lingering back, making for that delectable moment when you take that first bite. The food booths are a popular gathering place for family and friends, and no one comes away hungry! If your eyes are too big for your stomach, this is the place to be. A sweet tooth has never been more easily satisfied...with homespun goodness specially made for waiting cotton candy connoisseurs, and other fair favorites. In one area, it looked like a day at the beach! But this beach came to us, with volleyball competition one of the fun events to watch on Sunday. Or, for a lot more drama, Monster truck rides made a real impression. For people that attended this year's fair, it was fun and the weather was just right to celebrate Oregon's 150th birthday. Crowds enjoyed the varied activities and events, which were over 9,000 in number. Oregon’s got a lot of talent, proven at the Statewide Talent Contest. This traditional State Fair event is the culmination of talent contests held at Oregon county fairs throughout the summer. Each participating county sent their top candidates to compete and contestants performed on Center Stage throughout the day. Some of the best things at the fair are free, and crowds couldn't resist Oregon's stars. As they say, "A fair without a carnival is like a corndog without mustard." Fortunately, that's far from a problem at the Oregon State Fair, with one of the biggest, grandest, greatest carnivals in the state...including an intimidating sling shot that's really "out of sight"!
