Elections Complaint Alleges Illegal Activity Among Opponents of Anti-Discrimination Laws

According to the complaint, an organization called "Concerned Oregonians" and another group are misleading voters by claiming that contributions to their efforts are eligible for a "dollar-for-dollar" political tax credit of up to $100.

The group "Concerned Oregonians" is accused of misleading donors and failing to comply with the law.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - A complaint has been filed with the Oregon Secretary of State's Elections Division against groups gathering signatures to oppose Oregon's new family fairness and anti-discrimination laws.

The complaint, filed by elections activist Ellen Lowe, says the groups are breaking the law by misrepresenting themselves to voters and using false information to solicit campaign contributions.

According to the complaint, an organization called "Concerned Oregonians" and another group are misleading voters by claiming that contributions to their efforts are eligible for a "dollar-for-dollar" political tax credit of up to $100.

In fact, only contributions made to legitimate ballot measure and candidate campaigns are eligible for Oregon's Political Tax Credit.

According to the complaint, Concerned Oregonians, which has been soliciting support and donations from individuals and churches, is not a political action committee at all. The other group is not a campaign or ballot measure committee and donations to its efforts are not eligible for the credit.

The complaint also notes that Concerned Oregonians claims to be a co-sponsor of the referenda, and is collecting donations based upon that assertion, when it is not.

"We are very concerned that these groups are misleading donors and failing to comply with the law," said John Hummel, Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon. "These groups are advising churches and voters on election law, but they aren't following the laws themselves."

Oregon's campaign finance laws require the registration of political committees and the disclosure of campaign contributions to ensure clean and transparent elections. By failing to comply with the laws, Concerned Oregonians is able to conceal its financial donors from public scrutiny.

"Just like Oregon's family fairness and anti-discrimination laws, our election laws are here to guarantee fairness and a level playing field to all Oregonians," Hummel said. "What if their supporters follow their advice and falsely claim the tax credit? These groups have to follow rules just like everyone else."

IMHO the more serious (though unfortunately completely legal) offenses of these clowns is their LIES. Their claim that SB2 and/or HB2007 'violate the will of the voter' or are 'evidence the vote was stolen' when in fact the Oregon Family Council stated unequivocably in the hearings that BOTH SB2 and HB2007 were entirely in compliance with Measure 36 and did not violate it in any way. These zealots just want to continue trying to force their narrow and intolerant religious bigotry onto everyone else by force of law but they shriek like stuck pigs if they even think, regardless of the reality, that anyone might be doing the same to them. They are lying raging hypocrites and that is about the nicest thing one CAN say about them. What about the out of state signature gatherers who have defrauded voters by getting them to sign these hateful petitions thinking they were signing petitions for something else (some wine petition I think it was) and then cackling to eachother how they tricked gays into signing a petition against their own rights? I sincerely hope the trend I've seen continues and they fall WAY short on their signature drive. Maybe that will finally shut the bigots up... though I doubt it. Ah well...

Julie et al: Right on ! BUT no surprise--the neocon philosophy and protocol allows, rewards and praises that do-anything,kill-opponent antidemocratic manipulation. We saw it at work for decades in past "legislatures" controlled by D.C. drivers. We will see it further when "elected assembly" returns to Capital, with only offset the heavy-flow of rugged response from wit, wisdom, will of the Oregonian people, on essential change, as for corporate tax reform and demand for honest approach to voters, as here.

Collecting funds illegally to promote discrimination. How patriotic. I am embarrassed that these are my fellow Americans. Can't we raise the bar a LITTLE??
