(SALEM, Ore.) - Baseball is one of the most-watched sports in the United States. Sometimes it can be a confusing game even for fans dedicated to the MLB. Why are some of the rules in Baseball not written and yet expected to be followed?

We have broken down some of them so you can get your head around it. Read on to find out more about the unwritten rules of Baseball.

Don’t Celebrate a Home-run

Now, this one is about as counter-intuitive it gets. Picture the scene. You have just smashed the ball out of the park, and you want to show everyone how much it meant to you by losing your head and celebrating wildly. That’s OK, Right? Wrong.

This unwritten rule can last a generation. In 1988, Kirk Gibson scored an incredible home run for the Dodgers. After that, he ran the bases celebrating wildly and rubbing Dennis Eckersley’s nose right in it. The pitcher, then of Oakland Athletics, could do nothing but watch on in horror.

The Feeling Lasts

The event had a lasting impact on the perpetrator, and in 2015, Gibson called Eckersley to apologize. Gibson explained that high emotions got the better of him. He did not mean to show the Athletics man up.

Eckersley said, “You’ve got to be kidding me. I never thought of that once. You know how many people I pointed at after I struck them out? I would have been dancing going around the bases!.” What a gentleman!

Some Aren’t as Forgiving

It doesn’t always end this well. This season when the Giants faced the Dodgers, Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner took offense to what he saw as an overzealous celebration after Max Muncy scored a home run.

He proceeded to shout and gesture at the Dodgers man after he left for his run too slowly. Muncy continued to showboat, and the rest is history.

It looks like it got to the Giants, and if you backed them on Betway Baseball, you know the story. They lost the game with that being the only run scored 1-0.

Bat Flips After Scoring a Homer

This rule is evolving fast. In modern Baseball, some players don’t even see it as an issue. It all depends on the gravity of the game being played.

Blue Jays Jose Bautista smashed a three-run homer to force a tie-break and then proceeded to flip his bat much to the displeasure of the Rangers. They had to wait a whole season before infielder Rougned Odor started a fight with Bautista mid-innings.

Other Rules Not on Paper

There are too many to go into, but here are a few more you need to know. Baseball is all about respect, never punish a teammate openly after making a mistake. You would also think that swinging at the first pitch is the way to go. Players should never do this unless they know what ball is coming their way, it’s bad form in a big way.

Follow These Rules or You’re Out

If you keep these few rules in mind, you can be sure you won’t be breaking the most fundamental unwritten rules of the game. Keep in mind there are many more you should be aware of, and they are changing all the time.
