tsunami warning
An earthquake off British Columbia means a tsunami warning for much of the west coast.

(LINCOLN CITY, OR) - A tsunami warning continues to remain in effect following a 7.7 earthquake off the coast of British Columbia.

The tsunami advisory issued means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves very dangerous to people in or near the water can be expected.

Significant widespread inundation is not called for or expected under an advisory. However currents will become dangerous for swimmers, boats and coastal buildings and there are often continuing repercussions for several hours after the initial event.

Around 8:04 p.m. tonight an earthquake measured with a preliminary magnitude of 7.7 occurred in 25 miles/40 km south of Sandspit, BC. The earthquake generated a tsunami which could cause damage in areas within the warning zone.

The immediately affected area is the north tip of Vancouver Island in BC to Cape Decision Alaska, which is 55 miles SE of Sitka

The tsunami advisory is now modified to include the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Qualala Point California, located 80 miles NW of San Francisco, to Douglas-Land County line Oregon which is 10 miles SW of Florence.

A tsunami warning means all coastal residents in the warning area who are near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately inland to higher ground and away from all harbors and inlets including those sheltered directly from the sea.

The National Weather says those feeling the earth quake, or seeing unusual wave action, or the water level rising or receding, may have only a few minutes before the tsunami arrival and should move immediately. Homes and small buildings are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures.

The NWS further states that all residents within the warned area should remain alert for instructions broadcast from their local civil authorities.
