Oct-21-2012 17:43TweetFollow @OregonNews Cambodia: Free Human Rights DefendersLetter by William Gomes Salem-News.comMessrs Ou Virak, Pen Bonnar, Chhay Thy and Sok Ratha, all questioned over land rights activism.
(SALEM) - A number of Cambodian land rights activists were have been summoned and questioned by police for their advocacy. Cambodia has no reasonable excuse for the excessive government attention being applied to Human Rights Defenders Messrs Ou Virak, Pen Bonnar, Chhay Thy and Sok Ratha. In fact two of those in police custody; Pen Bonnar and Chhay Thy, have been on the government's radar since they began investigating the land conflict between local ethnic minority groups in 1998. Villagers from the disputed land complained that a company had illegally grabbed their land. The villagers are essentially powerless against the business interests. Our Human Rights Ambassador William Nicholas Gomes believes that the summon against the four human rights defenders is directly related to their work in the defence of human rights, in particular on land rights and the rights of ethnic minorities. He is urging Cambodian officials to immediately drop the investigation against Ou Virak, Pen Bonnar, Chhay Thy, and Sok Ratha as it is believed that it is solely motivated by their legitimate and peaceful work in defence of human rights.
