(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - DICK’S Sporting Goods, Inc., the country’s largest sporting goods retailer, announced today the opening of six new stores in the Oregon area, including the new Salem location. This store, which is set to open on November 8, 2009, will mark DICK’S Sporting Goods’ first entry into the Oregon market. “We’re very excited about our new Salem store,” said Jeff Hennion, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of DICK’S Sporting Goods. “Over the past several decades, as Oregon’s population has grown, so has the need for a wider selection of high-quality sporting goods and services in the Oregon market. From day one of our grand openings, our goal will be to meet and exceed the demand of Salem’s sports and outdoor enthusiasts through our unmatched assortment and unique specialty-store environment.” DICK’S Sporting Goods, founded in 1948 by Dick Stack, started as a modest bait and tackle shop in Binghamton, NY. By 1958, at the urging of loyal customers, Mr. Stack expanded the product offerings to include much of what is found in a DICK’S Sporting Goods store today. Currently, the retailer operates more than 400 stores in 40 states. “Not only will we be bringing the latest and best gear from the top names in sporting goods equipment, apparel and footwear, but the Salem store opening will generate between 40-60 jobs within the community,” adds Hennion. “Additionally, DICK’S is committed to becoming active within each community and is currently working to develop partnerships with local sporting leagues and organizations to ensure that these great local programs remain active.” DICK’S Sporting Goods will also be opening stores in Hillsboro, Gresham, Lake Oswego/Tualatin, Bend and Eugene as part of its West coast expansion.

+1 re: Washington Sq store.
It's mostly clothing - same stuff as in most Dept Stores and other Sporting Goods stores. With 17%+ unemployment, maxed Credit cards and all the "stuff" everyone already has, I wonder who will be buying, or which chain will be going out of business next.

"This store, which is set to open on November 8, 2009, will mark DICK’S Sporting Goods’ first entry into the Oregon market." Then what was the one I was just in at the Washington Square Mall? I have to say, I was unimpressed. Their main product lines seemed to be the same thing most of the other sporting goods chains (Big 5, Sportsmans' Warehouse) carry). Joe's had a lot more camping, fishing, automotive, etc. lines.

me thinks there are some nice locations where G.I. Joes used to be that should fit these folk well. Now as long as they dont sell $900 bbq's and ATV's they should be fine...
