Marijuana and Tobacco: A Lethal Combination

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The Portland Tribune usually a very conservative newspaper published an astonishing article 9-28-2013 titled "Sweet Deceit Cigars Tempt Teens". The article advertises a new type of miniature cigars about the size of a cigarette and sometimes called “cigarillos”. The new trick is to have them flavored such as, strawberry, peach, grape, honey, apple, and pineapple. High School kids are going crazy over them!

And about 17% of 8-11th graders have smoked them, and the rate is increasing.

These cigars cost about $1 each, which is much cheaper than the $4+ for a pack of cigarettes, of which they don't want to be discovered.

One of the strangest pieces of information in the article is that the students are putting marijuana in the cigars and, as they say, “getting a real high”. This is contrary to the use of medical marijuana, in which case the medical users try to avoid “getting high”, but just use enough to allay their medical problems.

In Oregon, about 59,000 citizens use marijuana legally to help them cope with about 60 different diseases. Student smoking has nothing to do with medical treatment and apparently their use cannot be stopped or even slowed down.

Long term tobacco use is usually lethal with at least 40,000 people a year dying from it's effects. In Oregon, last year we had about 1200 people die from tobacco use.

Not one person has died from marijuana use in any form, in 4,000 years of use.

The Tribune article states that the Legislature will probably NOT put any restrictions on lethal tobacco sales and use. At the same time, they seem to be doing all they can to prohibit or reduce of marijuana in any form. There is a word for this contradiction --- CRAZY!

Multnomah County will soon start an education program about the dangers of tobacco use. This is not strange, the D.A.R.E. Program, rather than reducing the use of drugs including marijuana, has been a complete bust. The program actually introduced and provided the knowledge about these harmful drugs, and even included marijuana which is the safest drug of all. This particular fact was overlooked in the D.A.R.E. lessons.

To the Portland Tribune, expect a great increase in the use of Sweet Deceit and the use of flavored cigars. This article of yours will just increase their knowledge, and the use of these dangerous cigarillos.
