(KEIZER) - A Newberg man says he was shot through the hand and robbed while walking in the 4300 block of River Road North early Saturday morning around 2:30 AM.

Keizer Police were dispatched to a convenience store after the clerk called and said a man had come into the business with an injury to his hand. Then learned that the victim had been robbed and was injured during the course of the robbery.

Officers arriving on the call made contact with the victim, a 24-year old Hispanic man who lives in Newberg, Oregon. He told police he was walking alone in the 4700 block of River Road North when he was approached by the suspect, a black male, 18 to 20 years of age, 5’11” to 6’2”, with a thin build. He said the suspect was wearing a long white t-shirt, a dark blue baseball cap, and white tennis shoes with silver accents. He indicated he did not know him.

The man told investigators that the suspect approached him and asked for a small amount of change, and after he told the suspect he did not have any change to give to him, the suspect demanded the victim give him his wallet. When the victim produced his wallet he said he and the suspect began to struggle over it.

During the struggle the victim said the suspect brandished a firearm as they continued to struggle. As the struggle continued the victim said the gun discharged one round that struck him in the hand. The bullet inflicted what is known as a “through and through injury”to the victim’s hand that was not deemed as life threatening. The gun was described as a full size, silver colored semi-automatic handgun, of an unknown caliber.

After being robbed and assaulted the victim disengaged from the struggle and fled the area. He told investigators that he eventually made his way to the convenience store where he requested assistance. He said the suspect took his wallet during the robbery.

The man was transported to the Salem Hospital for treatment of his injury. He was treated and released earlier this morning. Two members of the Criminal Investigations Unit responded to assist the Patrol Unit with this investigation.

The Keizer Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident, individuals hearing what may have been a gunshot, or who may have otherwise seen the victim or suspect on or near River Road prior to 2:39 AM to contact them. Any individual having additional information is asked to contact Officer Jeff Goodman at 503-390-3713 Ext. 3470, or Detective Jennifer Roberts at 503-390-3713 Ext. 3501.

Now I know why I don't walk around Marion County at 2:30 in the morning. What, did he think this was free county?
