Salem Woman, McMinnville Man Killed in Crash

Investigators believe icy roadways may have been a factor in the crash.

(McMINNVILLE, Ore. ) - Two people died and three others received serious injuries following a Monday evening two-vehicle head-on crash on Lafayette Highway about six miles south of McMinnville.

One driver died at the scene and a second died early Tuesday morning, and investigators believe icy roadways may have been a factor.

At approximately 8:20 PM, a gold 1998 Pontiac sedan driven by 23-year-old Amanda J. McGinnis, from Salem, was northbound on Lafayette Highway near milepost 3 when it veered across the centerline into the southbound lane and hit head-on with a maroon 2004 Hyundai SUV driven by 53-year-old George E. Hatch, from Amity.

McGinnis was using safety restraints and was transported with critical injuries by Life Flight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital. She reportedly died Tuesday morning from her injuries. There were no passengers in her vehicle and the airbag deployed.

Hatch was using safety restraints and died at the scene. His vehicle's airbag deployed. Hatch's wife/right front passenger, 52-year-old Beverly Hatch, received serious injuries. She was initially transported by ambulance to the Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville and then transported by Life Flight helicopter to Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU).

Left rear passenger, 66-year-old Lillian Ball, from Kansas, received serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Willamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville.

Right rear passenger, Cindy Green, age and residence unknown at this time, received serious injuries and was transported by REACH helicopter to OHSU.

Oregon State Police troopers from the McMinnville Area Command office were assisted at the scene by the Yamhill County Multi Agency Traffic Team, which consists of officers from the Oregon State Police, the McMinnville Police Department, the Newberg Police Department and the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office. The Dayton Fire Department and ODOT also assisted at the scene.

The highway was closed for approximately four hours.
