In The Beginning, and In The Other Beginning

'In the Beginning'

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - At a time when nature is so threatened, the hope is that atheists and those of all religious backgrounds will recognize their shared feelings for the sacredness of nature and all of our inviolable rights to it.

It might be helpful to atheists, as they read the quotes below from the Bible, to remember that Gandhi's religious belief was central to his courage, and that his openness to all people's beliefs helped him bring together Muslims and Hindus and other religions, which was crucial in defeating the British in India.

Gandhi spoke a universal language - God as Truth, God as an eternal principle. He didn't forget atheists, saying "God is conscience. He is even the atheism of the atheist."

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth ....

God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

The CEOs said "Let our laboratories produce synthetic living creatures: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, so that all living creatures can be patented and owned. And the CEOs saw that it was profitable.

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

The CEOs said "Let us make synthetic and/or cloned people in whatever images we wish, so we may patent them and own them and mine their DNA as our property and rule over them.         So CEOs began creating man-made human beings ....

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

The CEOs cursed them and said to them, "You may not be fruitful or multiply and from this we will profit.  You will not fill the earth and subdue it, but we alone shall subdue it.  And in all this, we will profit and we will rule over you and iver the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

Then the CEOs said "We will take away every seed-bearing plant on the face of the earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.  They will not be yours for food, because we shall alter them so they are no longer food but will give you illnesses and sterility.  And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it — we will alter every green plant for your food and give only illnesses and sterility."  And it began to be so.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

And the CEOs saw all they had "made," and that, beyond all historical measure, it was profitable. And the CEOs saw the suffering and diseases and lamentation they caused, not only among men but even among the animals, said "We are greater and more powerful than God now, for we shall own the earth and everything in it. God has been supplanted, for all that God has made and given for free - to feed and to heal - we have stolen and defiled and claimed as ours alone." And the CEOs laughed, saying "Despite all God has given mankind as blessings, God has been forgotten. Our Golden Rule is profit and it has conquered God.
