(BAKER CITY, Ore.) - Police say a motorcycle rider and a passenger in a car died Saturday afternoon when the two vehicles collided on Highway 30 about five miles northwest of Baker City. The crash was reported at about 4:48 PM, police said. The Baker County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police and Baker Fire Department responded to the crash on Highway 30 near milepost 44. The preliminary investigation appears to indicate that a 1997 Subaru Impreza with 3 passengers, driven by 48-year old Katherine Knox of Haines, Oregon, was traveling westbound on Highway 30 when it veered across the road into the eastbound lanes where a group of 3 motorcycles were traveling. One of the motorcycles, a 2007 Honda operated by 47-year old Timothy Hunt of Baker City, collided with the right side of the car as it crossed into the eastbound lane. Police say Mr. Hunt was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing a protective helmet. The Subaru's right front passenger, 27-year old Christia Marie Scotton of Baker City, was also pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints. Knox was transported by air ambulance to a Boise-area hospital with serious injuries. The other two passengers, a 4-year old boy and 2-year old girl, both from Haines, received minor injuries and were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital by Baker Fire Department ambulance. All occupants of the Subaru were using appropriate occupant restraints and the car's airbags deployed. Oregon State Police, Baker County District Attorney's office, and Baker County Sheriffs Office are continuing the investigation. They say additional information will be forwarded through the Baker County District Attorney's office as it becomes available. The highway was closed for over 5 hours while troopers and an OSP crash reconstructionist completed the scene investigation. OSP says ODOT and the Baker Fire Department assisted.
