Jerry Heater Submity Fire District

(Sublimity, Oregon) - It is with deep regret the Sublimity Fire District announces the death of long time volunteer firefighter Jerry Heater. Jerry passed away yesterday morning at Salem Hospital as a result of a heart attack.

Jerry just recently started his 52nd year in the fire service. Jerry started with Corvallis Fire and worked for Jefferson Fire District and Tualatin Rural Fire District (now Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue).

Jerry started volunteering for Sublimity Fire District in 1978 and held many positions in the district including fire chief from 1991-1995. Jerry was a pioneer and strong advocate for the Oregon Fire Service and carried that mission through his tireless efforts in fund raising for the Oregon Fire Service Museum.

Jerry was a mentor and advocate for countless people in the fire service. Some of these people have gone on to be fire chiefs in numerous fire departments across the country. The death of Jerry leaves a huge hole in the fabric of the fire service.

Jerry owned and operated Cruise Master Engraving where he engraved awards/plaques and other fire service related items. This business grew his footprint in the fire service at the national level.

Jerry was also an Elder Deacon with Peoples Church in Salem. Jerry served on the board of directors in varying capacities on the following organizations: Peoples Church, Northwest Fire Equipment Dealers Association, Oregon Fire Chiefs Foundation and the Oregon Fire Museum and Learning Center. Jerry was also the founder/show manager and board member of the Northwest Fire Expo held in Portland annually.

"I cannot think of any other person who had as much dedication and passion for the fire service and those around him as Jerry had" said Alan McMahen, retired Sublimity Fire Chief.

A public fire service memorial will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday November 20, 2010 at Peoples Church, 4500 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem Or, 97305. A fire service procession will follow.

Any donations can be made in Jerry Heater's name to any of the following: Oregon Fire Museum and Learning Center at 1284 Court St NE Salem OR 97301, Peoples Church 4500 Lancaster Dr NE Salem OR, 97305 or Sublimity Volunteer Firefighters Association P.O. Box 911 Sublimity OR, 97385.
