Nov-02-2012 01:21 ![]() ![]() Philippines: Threats Against Indigenous Human Rights DefenderLetter by William Gomes Salem-News.comMs Erita Capion Dialang's problems began after the killing of relatives in an army attack.
(SALEM) - Ms Erita Capion Dialang is an indigenous human rights defender who has been under threat since the killing of her sister-in-law on 18 October 2012.
Early in the morning on the 18th October 2012, as everything was quite in the village of Fayahlob, South Cotabato province, the military attacked the family of a known activist who battles corrupt forces for the benefit of human rights. Business interests in the Philippines are backed by the military and taking action by murdering women and children, seriously.. literally. Acting the role of a legitimate military unit, the Philippine Armed Forced 27th Infantry Battalion, commanded by Lt. Col. Noel Alexis Bravo, entered the village of Fayahlob, and had his soldiers direct a machine gun at the Capion family home and start firing. The attack killed Erita Capion Dialang’s sister-in-law, Juvy Capion as well as two of Juvy Capion’s children, and has been described by the military as a “legitimate encounter”. This, despite the results of fact-finding missions by non-governmental organisations in the area. It is reported that the military tampered with the scene, washing blood away from the house and moving the bodies of the deceased, before the arrival of the forensic investigation team.
