May-08-2006 23:33TweetFollow @OregonNews New Electric Car in Salem is a Real Buzz (VIDEO)Tim King Salem-News.comThe Xebra electric car rides four adults and has a radio/CD player. With a price in the neighborhood of $9,000, people are snapping them up for local commuting.
(SALEM) - High gas prices means the inventory`s selling fast at Electric Wheels Incorporated in Salem. Owner Larry Dye says the new cars go 40 Miles an hour, `They`re really well received here in Oregon." Dye says the new Xebra is what has everybody talking. The three-wheeler is actually licensed as a motorcycle. It can go faster than 40 MPH according to Dye, but keeping the speed down extends the car`s range. `It is zippy," he says. It is just one of the cars in the lineup at this revolutionary business. Unlike other electric cars that are limited to 25 mph by law, this three-wheeler will maintain speeds that make it a good around town cruiser, rain or shine. The electric car dealership had an open house over the weekend to celebrate the arrival of the new Xebra, which has already taken to Oregon`s streets. There may have never been a time in history when the cars that require no gasoline and put out no emissions looked so attractive. The Xebras cost considerably less than an economy car, Dye says that and the savings in gas make this an attractive choice for many Oregonians. The Xebra is available at Dye`s dealership on South 12th Street, and his inventory includes all kinds of things that move down the street or trail on electricity. He has two wheelers that seem just right for a college campus, three wheelers that our staff had to try out, and even four wheelers that kids can ride. As gas prices continue to sail upward, you might want to check out alternative vehicles, and Electric Wheels Incorporated has a lot to look at. EDITOR: SORRY THE VIDEO IS NOT HERE! Excellent around town car. Never stopping for gas is a major convenience and no obnoxious smells. For long distance gas busters pester the major manufacturers via http://www.PlugInAmerica.com

Put solar panels on your house and you can drive for free! How cool is that?

I would check these sites... http://www.evfinder.com/NEVs.htm You can call Larry Dye at 503 485-0488, his Website is http://www.electricwheelsinc.com/ Don't hold me to this, but I think Larry is the only dealership in the U.S. so far for the Xebra. It seems like a realistic vehicle that does what they claim. As far as range goes, again please verify this, but I think it is in the neighborhood of 50-100 miles depending on how much power you use. I hope that helps.

Is there any idea how long between charges the car can go? Are there any links where more information is available?

Wow, this story really peaked my interest in electric vehicles. Is this the solution to a finite supply of oil that I see? I think so. The only real con I could see in this is speed and possibley battery life, but those two things really are something that can be improved apon over and over. You dont have polution like you do with normal cars, and your energy source is alot more accessible (not to mention practically free).
