(SHERWOOD, Ore.) - A quick response by an off-duty Battalion Chief as well as career and volunteer firefighters from TVF&R, limited the damage caused by a fire at 23210 SW Cascade Place in Sherwood this afternoon. Sherwood Fire Spokesman Walt Peck says a Battalion Chief was working at his Sherwood home when he heard the 9-1-1 operator dispatch a first alarm response at 1:30 p.m. "He recognized the address as being just blocks away, was in route within two minutes, and arrived four minutes after the call was received. His initial description over the radio, "Heavy fire spreading from the garage to the house" prompted the first arriving engine company to ask permission to forego the time required to hook to a fire hydrant. Instead, Peck says they continued in and started an immediate attack with the 750 gallons of water they were carrying. "The fire's spread was contained until other crews arrived, and the blaze was under control within 5 minutes," Peck added. He also said TVF&R's career firefighters got some timely assistance today from the volunteers based out of Sherwood Station 33. "On site to help with the Sherwood Community Services Fair, which attracts several hundred visitors each year, the volunteers from Engine 333 were the second-arriving crew and actively participated in controlling the fire." He says thank to the combined efforts of all the firefighters, there were no injuries. "The garage was heavily damaged by the blaze, which also spread in to the attic of the home where it was quickly controlled." Peck says TVF&R Fire Investigators are on scene but there is no information about cause or estimate of damage available at this time.
