Police Identify Man Who Reportedly Leaped From Greyhound at Freeway Speed

Police identify the victim who died on Interstate 84 as a Florida man.

(THE DALLES, Ore.) - Oregon State Police csay they notified the next of kin of a man who died after jumping out of a moving Greyhound bus window Wednesday morning along Interstate 84 in The Dalles. The victim is identified as 40-year old Darryl Ingemar Dixon, a Florida man who was enroute to Tacoma, Washington. Mr. Dixon reportedly embarked from Davenport, Florida, boarded a Greyhound bus in Orlando, Florida and was enroute to Tacoma, Washington to visit a relative.

OSP Sergeant Pat Shortt says the Greyhound bus with about 35 passengers was westbound on Interstate 84 near milepost 86 at 3:00 PM driving at approximately 65 - 70 mph when a passenger seated near the rear right side of the bus identified as Mr. Dixon opened a window and attempted to jump out. He was pulled back in by another bus passenger, but within seconds he made a second attempt and jumped out onto the freeway shoulder, Shortt said.

Darryl Dixon was pronounced deceased at the scene. Shortt says other passengers described his behavior as irrational and unusual prior to the incident. "At this time, investigating OSP troopers have been unable to determine a cause for his behavior related to this incident," Shortt added.

Troopers report the estimated 3 foot by 4 foot window was opened when Mr. Dixon pulled on an emergency release lever that allowed the bottom of the window to swing open, providing the space for him to jump out.

Shorrt says the bus driver was unaware of what was happening until he was in the process of jumping out as passengers were yelling to get the driver's attention.

The passenger who attempted to prevent Darryl Dixon from jumping received a minor finger injury. He was treated and released from Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles before rejoining the bus on its scheduled stop in Portland.

OSP troopers from The Dalles Area Command office are continuing the investigation. One lane was closed for 3 about hours. The Dalles Police Department, Wasco County Sheriff's Office, Mid-Columbia Fire & Rescue, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
