(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - Three people were not injured after their 31-foot sailboat ran aground early Wednesday morning just north of the north jetty in Newport. The men were able to get to shore after calling a "May Day" to the Coast Guard, and they will be attempting to refloat the sailboat at high tide. At 1:53 AM skipper Peter Siegel, age 47, from Cannon Beach, of the sailing vessel "Evening Star" called for help to the Coast Guard after the boat ran aground just north of the north jetty. The three occupants set anchor about 30 yards from the beach. At about 3:00 AM the skipper and two crew members got into their dinghy and paddled to the beach. Siegel told Oregon State Police that he will attempt to refloat the vessel at high tide. The two crew members were identified as 53-year-old Bob Berry, from Astoria, and 45-year-old Michael Metzner, from southeast Portland. The three men reportedly set sail from Illwaco, Washington on May 22nd at 4:00 AM and were enroute to Newport.
