(NEWPORT, Ore. ) - The Newport Police Department is investigating a series of arson fires that occurred Monday morning. Police say the first incident occurred just after 2:00 AM. Neighbors to a residence on SW Brook St. near W. Olive St. smelled and heard a fire burning. They discovered a gas can had been set on fire next to their neighbors home and a parked motorcycle. The fire was reported and extinguished by the same neighbors. The victims motorcycle suffered damage, as did the lawn. Then at about 2:50 AM, neighbors in the 1500 block of NW Nye St. heard and smelled a fire burning and called the Newport FD. When checked, the callers discovered a neighbors vehicle completely engulfed in flames. Newport firefighters extinguished the blaze, which completely destroyed the car and slightly damaged a boat parked next to it. It was determined that this blaze had also been deliberately set. Newport PD officers were assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and NFD volunteer firefighters in searching the area for any possible suspect(s), but were unable to locate anyone in the area. Anyone with information about these fires are urged to contact Officer Dustin Kittel at the Newport Police Department at (541) 574-3348.
