(WICHITA, Kansas) - The town of Greensburg, Kansas, that was completely destroyed earlier this month by a tornado, is on alert again today. The National Weather Service says a strengthening area of low pressure will move into southwest Kansas by this afternoon. It is possible that isolated thunderstorms will develop along and ahead of a dryline. Any thunderstorms that form in this area will be capable of producing very large hail, damaging winds, and even a few tornadoes. These conditions are expected to diminish by midnight. There are media reports that people are being asked to leave, and stay away from the city until weather conditions improve. The tornado that leveled Greensburg in the overnight hours May, 5th, killed ten and injured 63 in the small farming town of 1,800. The peak tornado season in the U.S. runs from March through early July. The most violent single tornado in the U.S. happened on March 18th, 1925, killing 689 people as it ran from Missouri across southern Illinois into Indiana.
