May-21-2012 15:13TweetFollow @OregonNews Health Care Now for Military Families Poisoned at Camp LejeuneJerry Ensminger for Salem-News.comOur nation's leaders must act now to provide health care for the veterans and their families who were stationed at Camp Lejeune.
(CAMP LEJEUNE, Change.org) - My name is Jerry Ensminger, and I served my country faithfully for 24 years in the United States Marine Corps. During that time, I trained thousands of recruits to become honored Marines. And, like too many who lived at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, my family suffered great tragedy due to contaminated water at the base. Our nation's leaders must act now to provide health care for the veterans and their families who were stationed at Camp Lejeune. In 1983, my daughter Janey was diagnosed with childhood leukemia. Janey -- the only one of my children either conceived, born, or raised on the base -- was just six years old. For two and a half years, I watched Janey fight for her life. I watched her fight, suffer, and die. She passed away 27 years ago, when she was just 9 years old. When the Marine Corps learned about the poisoned water in the early 80s, federal law required them to clean it up. But the Marine Corps failed to tell the truth about the contamination until the late 90s, and even then only told part of the truth. Sadly, many who were stationed at Camp Lejeune still don't know why they were ill -- or don't know how vigilant they must be now about their health. It has taken years to expose the truth, and the Marine Corps has fought transparency at every turn -- delaying funding for health studies, withholding key documents and failing to disclose the true extent of the contamination to the public, the media, and Congress until forced to do so I have appealed to Marine Corps leadership to make things right for the families who have suffered, and I have testified before Congress asking for transparency and medical help for those who are now ill. The stories of families like mine have been documented in the film Semper Fi: Always Faithful. You can learn more about what happened here: www.tftptf.com. Thousands of people who were poisoned at Camp Lejeune are struggling without access to the medical care they need. It's time for the U.S. government to provide the people who are still suffering the effects of the toxic water at Camp Lejeune with health care. We volunteered to serve and protect our nation...we never volunteered to be poisoned by our own leaders! Sign the petition here. Jerry, I would love to speak with you further about this. I am 47 years old and had a bronchogenic tumor removed on 3/2/12 that was lodged between my heart and my spine. It was benign but I am wondering as one of 6 children of a Marine Corps Col. Pilot who was stationed at Camp Lejeune if this could somehow have been related. This came out of left field for me. My brother Thor has also had a benign tumor removed from the base of his brain stem (benign thank goodness), but weird situations as 2 children out of 6 with weird benign tumors. I can be reached at 512-626-9135 if you are interested in speaking further about this.

I just watched the "Semper Fi" story on tv and was moved at Jerry's dedication, perseverance, and strength to speak out so that the truth was revealed. He is a strong man and should be honored and recognized as a hero for exposing the deadly contamination that our military allowed to wreak havoc on so many families for several decades.

Just my opinion. I think the Veterans Administration should be confronted with a situation where they must be made to adhere to the Usual and Customary Standards of care. This situation is too large for such an action. It should be slipped in with the most minor issue possible. Once established, then it is a matter of precedence to be cited. A good example would be Hearing Loss - Tinnitus. There is a flaw in their testing procedures. The VA only tests to 4000 Hz, the standard for needing hearing aids, instead of to 8000 Hz which is the International Standard of testing for pathology.

I was stationed at Camp Lejeune on two seperate occassions. Jan 1974 to Sept 1974, and June 1975 to 10-1977. After leaving the Marine Corps I worked as a Correctional DeputySheriff in the Cook County, Chicago, Sheriff's office for 16yrs. In addition I served in the Illinois Air National Guard from Jan 1982 to June 1994. I retired as a TSGT, (E-6). I am now 55yrs old and as my Doctors tell me, Have the medical problems of a man in his late 70s. No matter how I look at it, I am convinced that my medical problems are the result of the Camp Lejeune water contamination which has effected so many others. It was bad enough that the Corps covered up some of the other major problems we had then, Main the racial and drug problems. I live with the never ending memories of friends who were killed on Ko Tang Island during the attempted rescue of the American container ship which was pirated from the high seas by the Cambodians in 1975. I can only hope and prey that the Corps will finally acknowledge to the world what really went wrong at Camp Lejeune and help those who now suffer. My time is short. I am unable to work. I am unable to show my family that which was taken from me from the many illnesses I now live with
