May-17-2008 08:15TweetFollow @OregonNews Clinton Going All-In to Upset Obama in OregonKevin Hays Salem-News.comIn Kentucky, which votes on the same day as Oregon, Clinton is expected to score a major blow-out win.
(SALEM, Ore. ) - Can Sen. Hillary Clinton pulloff one of the biggest upsets in political history on Tuesday? The former First Lady has placed any hope of winning Oregon is the hands of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and daughter, former First Daughter Chelsea, who will be side-by-side campaigning throughout the Beaver State today and Sunday hoping to chip-away at Sen. Barack Obama's double-digit lead and capture the state's 52 pledged delegates. Yesterday, Hillary traveled the state beginning in Junction City, with a stop at the Salem campaign office, and ending with a town-hall meeting at KGW-TV in Portland. Most every newspaper in the state has endorsed Obama. Only the Salem Statesman Journal endorsed Clinton according to her campaing website. She also has the backing from the state's Democratic Governor, Ted Kulongoski. Bill and Chelsea, will be holding a rally at the Salem Riverfront Park Amphitheatre on Sunday. The "Solutions for America" event is scheduled to run from 2:45 - 4:00 PM. To RSVP visit hillaryclinton.com/salem. Beofre the Salem, event, the duo will also participate in an "I Have a Dream" Foundation Service Project at Woodlawn Elementary School in Portland. After Salem, the pair will travel south to Ashland for another "Solutions for America" event at Southern Oregon University in the Stevenson Union Courtyard at 5:15 PM. To RSVP visit hillaryclinton.com/ashland. The Clinton Campaign launched a new ad in Oregon on Friday, emphasizing that while the pundits in Washington focus on who’s up and who’s down, Hillary Clinton will focus on what’s right for Oregon families. The 30-second spot, entitled "What’s Right," details Hillary’s commitment to end the No Child Left Behind Act and provide quality, affordable health care for every American. And it emphasizes Hillary’s opposition to the Bush Administration energy bill, which removed local control over the siting of liquefied natural gas terminals on Oregon’s coast. Obama, along with wife Michelle, will appear for a town-hall meeting at Roseburg High School at 11:30 AM Saturday. On Sunday, he will hold a 12:30 PM rally in Portland’s Waterfront Park and a 6:30 PM town-hall meeting at the Pendleton Convention Center. 2,026 delegates are needed to get the Democratic nomination. Barack Obama has 1,887 to 1,717 for Clinton. That means Obama needs only 138 more delegates in the next five contests (Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, South Dakota, and Montana) to become the nominee. There are 260-plus superdelegates who are yet to be claimed and are not bound by the outcome of any state's vote. In Kentucky, which votes on the same day as Oregon, Clinton is expected to score a major blow-out win. NBC News Washington bureau chief and Meet the Press host Tim Russert characterized Hillary's win in the New Hampshire Democratic primary as one of the greatest political upsets in American political history. Will he change his mind come Tuesday? We will see. Articles for May 16, 2008 | Articles for May 17, 2008 | Articles for May 18, 2008 | googlec507860f6901db00.htmlQuick Links

I am praying that Oregon votes for Hillary. She is someone who love this country and will work her heart out for every single person. I will never vote for Obama I cannot in good conscience vote for someone who for 20 years listened to sermons filled with Hate for America and for White People I'm sorry I couldn't listen to that and I can't vote for someone who would. He has no character.
Henry Ruark May 20, 2008 8:18 am (Pacific time)
Susan et al: You can count on every possible kind of smear being set up vs Obama...but that in itself is further proof that opposition is now reduced to trivialities, personal denigration, and similar inanities, while forced to avoid the real issues of change demanded now to save what we have left of our tattered/torn/deeply damaged original republican(small-r !) democracy. We've leared the hard way that neocons will do anything to anybody to continue their unprecedented malign efforts driving wedges between class and class, worker and employer and government, and even the major religions. That must stop, since 21st Century demands we return the nation to its world leadership before further "preemptive attack" on another nationa draws down "The BIG One", to leave us all cinder-covered if still able to breathe, and the involved-nations stricken as never before in Earth-history.

This time the Clinton's deceptions and crime have caught up with them...thanks to the internet. So Long....Farewell...We hope not to see you again.
carpetbagger, like hillary May 19, 2008 8:52 pm (Pacific time)
you really believe hillary won harlem? can you even say that out loud with a straight face? everybody screaming about florida and michigan, how about getting votes in new york to count?
MM May 19, 2008 8:32 pm (Pacific time)
All this talk about Obama not counting votes. Hillary doesn't count 17 states in her popular vote count. The major difference between the two candidates is transparency and accountability plan. Obama has a plan for both issue, Hillary doesn't.
Susan May 19, 2008 1:26 am (Pacific time)
The nominee won't be official until the convention in August. Obama wants Hillary out now because he knows how much of his past is going to be revealed between now and the convention. Many of "His" delegates will have second thoughts by then and jump ship to keep their own careers afloat.
Henry Ruark May 18, 2008 7:35 pm (Pacific time)
DId you see the CNN-shot of that 65,000-person crowd in Portland, for Obama ? Oregon may well force end to Hillary campaign --we'll see; in meantime carpetbaggers on this channel take heed: We in Oregon make up our own minds, pundit-and-persuader/free, a lesson learned long ago from famed Sen. Wayne Morse in his run vs such as Packwood of notorious reputation then and resignation later. So don't waste your time and our S-N space; we vote Tuesday and then we'll see what guts exist on final victory need, unity of effort based on full mutual respect for American values and actions.

Thomas May 18, 2008 11:45 am (Pacific time)
Dear Tim: You cast your vote too soon why are you against women Hillary has the experience not Obama Thomas
Thomas, you are ridiculous to suggest that I am against women, that is offensive. Would you like me to ask you what you have against black people? I would not pose that question because I don't assume you are prejudice simply for not supporting a particular candidate. Hillary has more skeletons in the closet than even she can count, and in spite of that I would support her if she were the only choice. The truth is that Barack Obama is going to be the President and there will be great change in our future; Hillary is not the worst person, just not the best choice here.

ABG et al: Problem with truth in most political discourse is that it is universally painful --for those suddenly illuminated as propaganda/and/spin perpetrators and for those who know it but did NOT acknowledge it --as "denial" or otherwise. Obama quote (and much of Pastor Wright, too !) falls precisely into that file, as diversity of comments here now surely proves. SO you listen, learn, seek solid checkable fact, and THEN use what's left-operational in YOUR OWN mind. That's basic democratic principle far too long neglected in this 30-year parade of false political confrontations, initiated in Reagan-Bush I era as weapon with which to win despite any damage to democracy. IF your stance for ANYone is so shallow quotes-out-of-context allow you to depart for another, you need to examine the WHY and also the WHEREFORE, since you may leave behind your own best interests via flawed rationale built on distorted/perverted information.
Vic May 18, 2008 10:51 am (Pacific time)
I totally agree with Henry's last comment !!!!!
Steven Doyle May 18, 2008 8:13 am (Pacific time)
All this is doing is helping John Mccain win another term for the Rebublicans. Get out now Hillary!!!
Henry Ruark May 18, 2008 6:13 am (Pacific time)
To Reggie et al: Sorry, Reg, several others outshoot you with calumny and catastrophe wrapped in racist fears and fantasies about all issues and problems. But then this is that kind of epic confrontation --and I do NOT mean between the Demo candidates !! THIS time millions of us now find ourselves face to face not only with America's dream of democracy but with strong opportunity to make the right choice(s) --and an awakening conscience to tell us what those choices must NOW be, in this, the 21st Century. Can you see the Founders following our futilities, from wherever they may be now ?? They are even more anxious and concerned than we, for the realization or wreck of what was their OWN dream.
jenn May 17, 2008 11:11 pm (Pacific time)
Go Hillary 2008!!!!!!!!!
ABG May 17, 2008 10:33 pm (Pacific time)
As a life long Democrat, I am sorry to say I will never vote for any candidate who stereotypes people as turning to bigotry when times get tough. What was the point of saying that remark, Barach Obama? I hope the good people of Oregon agree that no Presidential candidate should be in the White House with these thoughts and actions.

I believe that the people of Oregon will give the majority of their votes to Hillary. After all that has happened since March 4th here in Texas...well WV showed everyone they've been paying attention and I believe the good people of Oregon have been too. This game that's been being played to hand Mr. Obama the nomination because he'll make a good "Yes" man for those who've always had it in for the Clintons is all too obvious. Go Hillary you'll kick McCain's butt too. Texas loves ya and we know you won't be another embarassment!!

Oregon, it's time to make your voice heard and bring the democratic party together. It's been a long hard campaign, but its time to rally around Obama and bring a close to this race. The reality at this point is that Obama is likely the de facto nominee. The party leaders and the majority of voters have shown their support for Senator Obama, and while Clinton campaigns on valiantly, the superdelegates and the party leaders have coalesced around Senator Obama - for a good reason, he has the ability to beat the republicans in November. Make the inevitable easier for Sen. Clinton and cast your vote for Obama to bring this primary to a close. Senator Obama will unite this country and has shown the he can inspire millions of people across the country and bring people together. Join the amazing race, join the Obama campaign! It's time to rally around one candidate and take on the republicans and take back the white house in 08. -Obama 08
Reggie May 17, 2008 6:09 pm (Pacific time)
The democratic party and their media supporters are afraid of Al Sharpton and the AA staging a riot. That's why they are giving the nomination to Obama....a bunch of wimps and a disgrace to democracy.
*Salem-News.com nominates this as the most out of touch comment for the day, congratulations!

What did the Clintons did for this country. In 1988, crime was perhaps the biggest issue in the election campaign. Blacks saw the death penalty as racially unfair. The country demanded a hard line against crime and too often associated that crime with blacks. Today, by contrast, roughly 1% of Americans say crime is their top issue, and no one even knows Obama's position on the death penalty is. Bill Clinton, his policies especially his bold proposal for 100,000 new cops, helped bring down the crime rate. In the mid-1980s, pollsters found that government help for the needy was seen as welfare by voters, taking money from whites to give to undeserving blacks. That attitude was unfair, but it was a political reality. Clinton changed that when he reformed welfare in 1996. By making it brutally clear that people who didn't work wouldn't get much help from Washington. The Clintons made it harder for Republicans to tag Democratic antipoverty programs as handouts to "welfare queens." The Clinton presidency restored the Democratic Party's reputation for economic management, which Jimmy Carter had nearly destroyed. By almost 20 points, according to the Pew Research Center, Americans today trust Democrats over Republicans to guide the economy. BO could not achieved this behind a podium If Clintons had been more like Obama--he might have vetoed welfare reform and unambiguously defended affirmative action. He might also have gone with his liberal base and chosen economic stimulus over deficit reduction in 1993. The Clintons restored the Democrats' credibility on economic issues and took three of the most racially toxic issues in U.S. politics--crime, welfare and affirmative action--off the table so BO may find audiences to brag over the poetic form of change now. BO is a phony. His poetic promises of change is supported by hot air.----- Todd Spivak of the Houston Press has documented how Obama accomplished next to nothing in his first six years in the Illinois legislature.------ Then Emil Jones Jr. an African American with thirty years in the legislature made Obama a sponsor of 26 bills that became law. This is how BO portrays himself as a highly successful legislator.------ This is just like giving him the ball at 1 yard line.----- Has Obama repaid Jones? Yes. He has provided tens of millions in earmarks for Jones' district. As to such actions, Jones famously said: "Some call it pork; I call it steak."------ Michelle Obama's salary at University of Chicago Hospitals when her husband won the US Senate seat was $121,000. Within weeks of his swearing in, her salary went to over $320,000. The following year Obama did an earmark request for $1 million for her employer.------ BO's credential passed in the net is fabricated and not true; FACTCHECK says don't believe it.----- BO does not have the stamina and tenacity to be a true, and solid reformer. He ducks and quits on people.

Please do not let the media, the pundits, the unfair cauceses, the DNC, the disenfranchisement of Michigan and Florida voters or anyone or anything else usurp our democratic election process. PLEASE THINK ABOUT WHY YOU'RE VOTING FOR THE PERSON YOU CHOOSE. If you really think about it, there's no other conclusion but that Hillary Clinton is the best choice for President. She doesn't just talk about hope and change. She details her plans for change. The greatest hope for change is to have a dedicated experienced leader who values and looks out for the best interest of everyone in our country. PLEASE VOTE FOR HILLARY -- YOU WONT' BE SORRY LATER!

God what a bunch of dirty racist liars. You will "go across the aisle" because McCain has better values? Did somebody let you out of the looney bin? Racists!
Marian May 17, 2008 4:08 pm (Pacific time)
Hillary has been fighting for our children for years, included the National Guard in the health care program, she is still fighting for us, all of us not the special few. I have voted since JFK but this is the first time I have taken the time to do my part as best I can. In the past I have shown up on election day and cast my vote. This year it is so important when the media decides what they want and tells us what we need. I feel it is only Sen Clinton that can turn this economy and the lack of respect we have in the world around. I will vote for her. Should she not be the choice I have to go across the aisle and vote for a person I do not agree with but he is closer to my thoughts and values than Sen Obama.

Its so funny to see the spammed, pro-Hillary messages at the top of this page. Hillary is old-school politics. She has shown us all that she will lie, distort, play the race card, and sit around hoping to "win" the nomination through some technicality or act from God. She has lost plain and simple and its time for her to start supporting our Nominee, Barack Obama so that we can avoid McBush in November. Obama can and will be our next President of these UNITED States. OBAMA '08!
cynthia May 17, 2008 3:01 pm (Pacific time)
This should be a no brainer. I keep hearing experience is less important than change. Hillary epitomizes not just change but real tangible change. Because of her dedication and experience she has learned what works and what doesn't in numerous areas of service. Some call her a liar (sometimes even worse) but what lies has she committed that disadvantage anyone. What lies has been so great that it changed the world. Oddly the ones who accuse her have really never met her. She is the change we need. We need a president who is intelligent, caring but also willing to fight for what they believe to be in the best interest of those they serve. We know where she comes from. Contrary to those who have met her they cannot stop praising her caring, listening and determination to bring about good resolutions. Obama frightens many of us. His overall Illinois senate performance record is not fully known due to lack of adequate paper trail for that time. I also have friends who lived in the district he represented and cannot believe how he has fooled people to believe that he cares about the welfare of his people. The slumlords and slum areas are still there and were no better when he was there. The same feelings of fear were the same we had when the current Bush was running for office the first and second time. Both times we were right to be fearful. Obama skills as an orator would be great for speaking to improve civil and human right issue, similar to the task that MLK took on. With the world in the shape it is today he is not ready for the highest position of the USA. Many of us feel he is a puppet in a much larger political scheme. But his past accomplishments do not standout to be embellished. Hillary’s accomplishments speak for themselves. I could go on and on about Hillary, but I hope we have hit the real standout issues of qualification in this troubled world. I will say this, if it is change one truly wants Hillary would be true change. A woman running things the way they should and need to be run....

It is so exciting to participate in this years election where the people are taking back the White House! We have united and have formed a group that are lobbying for the middle class in this country and we have a candidate who will stay with us till she is in office and then work on our behalf- Hillary Clinton. It is so exciting that no one but the people whose voices have yet to be heard will decide our next party's presidental candidate than having the news forecasters calling it on Super Tuesday, months before the primary is over. I will not vote for anyone but Hillary, that is, if my vote will be allowed! Being a Floridian, I never dreamed I would have to endure another nightmare and have my vote stolen from me again! And for it to be the Democrats heirarchy, it just doesn't seem possible but sadly it is. I want a president that is prepared, has the experience and knowledge, and who has always been proud to say she is a American and able to wear red, white and blue prior to last week. I cannot understand how the super delegates can't see that they are handing the republicans the victory in November, a win that was in their pocket, and allowing the Republican's to choose their opponnet. Have you ever wondered why they have put out the welcome sign for Obama? Maybe it is because there is nothing more they can do to Hillary and that they have a war chest full of info and data that once exposed, will prevent voters from electing him. God Bless Hillary Clinton, the people's candidate!
Romie May 17, 2008 2:10 pm (Pacific time)
I hope last minute undecided Oregonians realize that they, not the pundits, can make a difference on the future of our country. From the beginning of the race for the nomination Obama's appeal has been limited to a narrow sector of the democratic party. After much campaigning and money spending he has not been able to move beyond those constituencies. He is not going to win in November, too many people dislike him and his wife. He has a serious electability problem, obviously.

jacksmith May 17, 2008 12:43 pm (Pacific time)
HILLARY CLINTON IS THE GREATEST CAMPAIGNER IN AMERICAN HISTORY !!! HILLARY CLINTON CAN BEST WIN IN NOVEMBER: IT'S ABOUT ELECTABILITY !!! It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania, and loss in Indiana and West Virginia makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP. Sen. Obama has zero chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources without Hillary Clinton. Zero chance. It is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up. Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Sen. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World. Sen. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Sen. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes. If Sen. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human. Don't be fooled by the pledged delegate, and math arguments. Neither candidate has the necessary pledged delegates. The entire delegates counts, and votes from Florida, and Michigan are not even being counted. Plus the democratic caucuses, and primarys have been heavily corrupted by fraud, and vote cheating. The only relevant question now is who can best WIN IN NOVEMBER and take back the Whitehouse for the American people. And the answer is HILLARY CLINTON. Everyone knows that now. Sincerely Jacksmith... Working Class :-) p.s. Cynthia Ruccia - I'm with ya baby. All the way. "Clinton Supporters Count Too."
16% Awful Caucus Skew May 17, 2008 12:24 pm (Pacific time)
As for pledged delegates and popular vote, in Caucus States housebound and bedbound older women were forbidden Absentee Ballots and so do NOT show up in those false counts. 87-yr-old Vera in Iowa was typical, "Oh no honey, I can't dare go out to caucus, I'm off-balance. If I can't get there in my body, I don't count." It's shameful. (16% swing in Texas between Absentee Balloted primary and the voters-suppressing Caucus on the same day.) SUPPOSE we had ONLY seen the Caucus Results in Texas? THAT'S what happened in Iowa all those other Caucus States. Hillary is the champion for so many whose dispossessed sorrow or rage is transformed to courage at her example. For her remarkable visions of our Green Future and for actually Universal HealthCare -- for our children’s children, Hillary is the best choice.

It's 2209. Florida and Michigan must be included in the bid for the White House for the Democrats. WE can not win in November without Florida and Michigan. Do not let the media and the pundits decide your vote. They have their own agenda, which is not always in our best interest. Senator Clinton leads in popular votes and has take the big states and the swing states needed to win in November. It is the "Map" not the "Math" that is important here. The caucuses need to be done away with, they do not reflect the voting population since a lot of people can not attend caucuses, and those votes are easily manipulated. Obama wins caucuses, Clinton wins the most important primaries. Americans are speaking loudly and clearly, our choice for the White House is Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

My fellow Oregonians, We have a chance to stand up for the good of our nation and the principles of our democracy. The DNC leadership with the help of the media are trying to APPOINT a nominee rather than let the people ELECT one. I will not stand for a party that disenfranchises 2.5 million voters who have done NOTHING wrong. They showed up to vote on the day their state legislatures told them to show up. How can anyone stand for that. Obama has objected to any efforts to do a revote - they blocked the legislation in Michigan through their surrogate law makers, they said no to a revote even after people came forward to raise the money to pay for it. I can NOT stand for a candidate who steps on the rights of people to vote. This is so fundamental that I believe if we let this stand, we can say goodbye to our democracy. Imagine this. If they disenfranchise two of the biggest states in the country, who is to say Oregon will not be next. Who is to say that my voice in the next national, state, or local electiopn will not be silenced. This is our chance to stand up for our country and our democracy. Say NO to Obama and the DNC leadership. Thank you.

I'm not sure the campaigns have figured out how to approach Oregon, with our vote-by-mail election. What is the percentage of voters who will, at this point, cast their ballots and hand-deliver them to election centers? Do we have that many procrastinators? I cast my ballot (for Obama) two weeks ago! I hope he spends his time in Kentucky, where last-minute appearances might make a difference.
