May-15-2011 15:34TweetFollow @OregonNews Demand the Release of Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh and OthersTim King Salem-News.comThe Professor will be released tomorrow, according to reports.
(SALEM / BETHLEHEM) - UPDATE #2: west coast time 4:44 p.m. Lawyers just informed say Mazin and two other Palestinians will be released on bail tomorrow. Their cases will be reviewed later, and if there is no evidence to bring charges then the case will close and bail money returned. We can all breathe a sigh of relief now. Your support and prayers meant so much to the family and helped keep them strong. The next message hopefully will be coming from Mazin himself. In the meantime, the work continues until the rest of them are free. UPDATE west coast time 3:45 p.m. As of now at local time Monday morning 2:00 a.m., Mazin is still being detained. His cell phone battery died as he called to communicate the names and countries of the seven internationals that were detained with him so that volunteers can get help calling their respective country's embassy (Ireland, USA, Canada, Germany, Netherland.) Later he borrowed someone else's phone to advise that all the internationals would be released shortly, but not he and and other Palestinians. For them, he said, maybe days. Advocates are making connections with an attorney. Mazin sounded in good spirit and did not seem to be mistreated. Your calls to the U.S. State Department, Senators, Congresspersons, and foreign governments if you are non-US nationals should also help. Israeli soldiers arrested Salem-News.com writer Dr. Mazin Qumsiyeh, a prominent professor who has instructed at both Duke and Yale, along with two other Palestinians early this afternoon local time as he was participating in a peaceful nonviolent civil disobedient march toward the Green Line in Al Walaja (one of the many Nakba events taken place today.) Many media were there and his arrest was caught on tapes as he was just at the scene peacefully. Israeli forces are reported to have bombarded the protest in Al Walaja with tear gas, forcing protesters to find refuge in the village’s houses. Five more were arrested after IDF soliders raided homes. According to a press release, three Palestinians, one Irish and another international were arrested from homes. The original village of Al Walaja was expelled in 1948 and gradually resettled across the valley, near Beit Jala in the Bethlehem district. The march today planned to march from the newly settled Al Walaja to the village’s original lands, which is now forested with a nature reserve. Mazin is currently being held at the Israeli military compound near Rachel's Tomb. The last time he was arrested by Israeli forces for participating in a peaceful demonstration, he was treated with brutality and held long periods bound and denied simple things like water.
It is reported in Al-Walaja that the IDF is firing tear gas at the remaining protest crowd. Elsewhere in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza, and Golan Heights, there were reports that dozens were wounded in many places, including more than 150 wounded at Qalandia checkpoint. Please complain to your government and demand them to stop supporting the brutal Israeli Apartheid regime. Please support and participate the Nakba events around the world today and double the effort of BDS on Apartheid Israel. No country should be above the fray when it comes to legal behavior. The United Nations guaranteed the human race that certain dignities are required by law, as defined by the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Israel defies this international law with the help of U.S. taxpayer revenue and the current violence is just getting started, as today was the official launch of the Third Intifada to free Palestine. Sadly, this is not the first time that this distinguished peace activist and educator has been arrested by Israeli apartheid forces. Contact the Israeli embassy, tell them this is unacceptable, demand the professor's release. Then send this information to everyone on your email list and ask them to do the same. Also, call 202-647-4000 and ask to speak with "Overseas Citizens Services Duty Officer" and let them know you need info on Mazin's case, say that he is an American citizen.
