Oregon State Police to Begin Training 34 OSP Recruits and 6 City Police Recruits

This will be the second time that outside police agencies are sending newly hired officers to the Oregon State Police Recruit School.

(SALEM) - As the Oregon State Police approaches its 75th anniversary, forty individuals, including 34 new Oregon State Police (OSP) recruits and 6 newly hired city police recruits, are beginning training May 1st, at the OSP Recruit School held at Camp Rilea located at the north Oregon coast south of Astoria. In addition to ten OSP recruits hired following legislative E-board approval, the other 24 OSP recruits fill current vacancies resulting from attrition and retirements. "The Department enthusiastically welcomes the thirty-four new Oregon State Police recruits that include ten individuals who were hired with Governor Kulongoski's support and commitment in working with the Legislative Emergency Board," said Superintendent Ronald C. Ruecker. "In addition to our new recruits, we welcome the opportunity to provide training to six new city police department trainees. This is an opportunity to have a close working relationship with the represented agencies, both during and after their officers complete recruit training." Each recruit will receive approximately 840 hours of training over a 20-week period to prepare them for a career with their respective departments. The 34 OSP recruits include 32 men and two women, and the city police department recruits include 5 men and one woman. Patrol Services Division “ Albany, Astoria, Bend, Capitol Mall (4 recruits), Coos Bay (3 recruits), Government Camp, Grants Pass, Hermiston (2 recruits), John Day, Klamath Falls, Madras, Newport, Pendleton, Portland, Roseburg (2 recruits), Salem (2 recruits), Springfield (2 recruits), St. Helens, The Dalles, and Tualatin. Fish & Wildlife Division “ Albany, Arlington, Astoria, Lakeview, and Portland. "The patrol function of the Oregon State Police is critical to creating safe communities and a strong economy and I'm pleased that the Senate President and House Speaker have joined me in helping to increase the number of officers who patrol our communities and protect our citizens," Governor Ted Kulongoski said. "In addition to the patrol and fish & wildlife recruits, it is exciting to see the partnership and cooperation between state and local police agencies in this training environment that will pay dividends today and in the future." This will be the second time that outside police agencies are sending newly hired officers to the Oregon State Police Recruit School. City police departments represented at the OSP training are Baker City, Medford (2 recruits), Newberg, Oregon City, and Warrenton. Following Governor Kulongoski's call for more state police troopers as one of his goals for the 2007-2009 biennium, there may be future law enforcement career opportunities on the horizon with the Oregon State Police.
