Chiseled Features of a Clark Kent Are No Guarantee that a Superman Dwells Beneath

Being the straightforward and honest symbol of man’s goodness, Superman would never be caught dead in the skin of Mitt Romney.

(PASO ROBLES, CA) - Those of us who remember, know that Clark and Superman were one and the same. Clark was true to Lois, and Superman changed his demeanor and character usually in a telephone booth, after which he performed miraculous feats human beings have never been able to duplicate.

Moreover, his marvels were always performed in the interest of mankind, never in a manner to confuse us with doubt. He was a decent chap with impeccable values consistent with the interest of all; he was everybody’s hero. Best of all he was immune to everything evil.

Several times on 8 May 2012 - Mitt Romney was referred to facetiously as being of the same character as the mythical comic book original, but for other reasons.

Being the straightforward and honest symbol of man’s goodness, Superman would never be caught dead in the skin of Mitt Romney who, in spite of his professed Mormon Religiosity - he is a Bishop you know - he has proven to be better able to tell others how to behave as Mormons than to live up to the tenets of his faith, which he justifies by saying it is not because of him, but rather because in the realm of politics, it is the way things are done.

Maybe a little more Soupy Sales than Super Man

It certainly is true of the Republican Party which has been taken over by Evangelists who interpret the Bible and anything they pretend to be of God’s will, including our Constitution and the Bill of Rights, as having been Ordained by God, as they perceive and want things to be, “right” or wrong, but logically incorrect.

The pity is, the GOP leadership has gradually acquired power by patiently and methodically filling positions of authority during periods of its reigns with Christians of its own ilk who they know will contribute to the authority of the Holy See. Most if not all Republicans seeking office, are devotees who will have the support of the Holy See to which, if elected, they will be beholden.

The degree to which the Republican Holy See, a metaphor for the GOP, has gained control of the Party is evident in the way its member vote as a [block] to block any and all issues raised by Democrats with the single object of preventing Barack Obama from being re-elected because they see him and the Democratic Party as interfering with and being contrary to its ultimate goal.

I’m surprised that Mitt Romney has been allowed to come this far by the Holy See which would prefer a more pure Christian nominee according to its definition; nor am I certain that eventually a dark horse may yet replace Mitt Romney, Time will tell. It certainly would be in keeping with my perception of things.

Kenneth G. Ramey, Salem-News.com's Religion and Philosophy Writer, confronts the hard issues of politics and religion from a logical point of view that combines interesting insight with history into the truth, or lack thereof, that underlies the strengths and weaknesses of the Religious Right’s determination to use American politics for its own misguided, or selfish, interest. It’s rare for a writer to balance his writing between religious values and the secular guarantees of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights with the knowledge that Ken possesses, and to do it so effectively.

Ken was born in Minnesota but was raised in California since 1932. He is the youngest of four boys raised by his mother alone during the dark years of the Great Depression. He Graduated from SFSU in the 1970s when in his mid-forties, majoring in Spanish North American History, and added three years of post-graduate study, much of it in Philosophy and Religion. We live at a critical time in history and believe Ken's views represent the view of many who are tired of the commercialism and false interpretations about religion today. Those who dislike, even hate, the majority of Americans who practice some form of religion just cannot handle that reality. The “radicals” and “revolutionaries” fail to see and understand the building process of Western Civilization and seek to pull down and destroy..... basically they fail to think of how to improve life. There is a huge detachment from reality, consequently they have not thought out the next step. Radicals and revolutionaries have been around since before recorded history. Like children playing in the cornfield maze. No idea nor understanding whatsoever. Funny, you on the left know The Tea Party won’t even kick over a trash can and to you they are the “radicals” and “revolutionaries”! The percentage of liberals in the world are trending down while for conservatives the trend is up. Of course we have many on the right who have no problem dealing with the radicals on the left in a Tudor-like fashion. We do not turn the cheek, we deal with violence in a final way. Just look at our history, as you enjoy the safe comfortable life we provided you ingrates.

So are we sending our kids to Canada for their educational needs? Why not come down to Oregon DJ and we can chat, okay? Tell me all about the succes you have had and all those degrees you earned. So then we can pursue the "laughing stock" scenario people of your ilk throw out...putz.

Tim King: You know, you are a lowly little person, you only wish you had a degree of the brain power DJ possesses and to our good fortune, he uses his experience and talent to show us the real result of our actions and history, as Ken Ramey also does.  I will soon begin striking all comments like this, you can't even spell the word 'success' correctly and if that isn't telling then nothing else is.  You're dumb and you're mean, sorry you were laden with such a rotten personality.  You know all about laughingstock I'll bet, but you shouldn't retaliate against successful people just because you are such a miserable wanker, dig?

DJ can you name a specific piece of legislation that Bush passed that impacted America negatively because of his faith? Keep in mind how the American political system works. Currently Obama and people like him, including some judges and a few state legislatures have allowed their ideologies to overturn the will of the people. Did you see the recent North Carolina vote on same sex marriage? They were the 33rd state, so far, that passed a citizen vote law stating marriage is only between a man and a woman. Thus far, all state votes have backed up what NC just did, so we have a tyranny of a few over the majority because of their ideology. Bush acknowledged his faith, but only congress creates law, now we have Federal Judges making laws. We are the government, we have are representatives, and when they act out of what we want, we remove them. Same thing happens in Canada, and you have finally gotten on track. Congrats.

You're premature. Harper's first year has largely been a disaster and he may not last another year or two. This is Canada, not America and we are, by definition, left of American politics. Here in Alberta, the right-wing evangelicals were overwhelmingly rejected in the election a couple of weeks ago. Here in Canada we have a socialist party, the NDP which has the second largest number of seats after the Cons. Canada is a progressive nation.

Negative Bush legislation? You're an American, you should know. What comes to mind immediately is his push to deny funding to organizations that promote birth control in order for people to decide on family sizes; his promotion of abstinence only as sex education was a dramatic failure. Also consider his support of legislation that promotes creationism in the schools, saying that evolution is not settled science which has made the U.S. a laughingstock of the developed nations.  Over eight years his covert religiosity completed the final polarization of the nation.

Ken when Gov. Romney was running the show in Massachussette, I never heard anything untoward about his Mormon faith interfering with his governance, have you? How about Senator Reid,D NEV, senate majority leader, Mormon? In fact I have never heard of any formal complaint registered against anyone in Congress, or a sitting president, who had their religious faith causing a problem. Most of the problems I see happening are those of no faith who are constantly filing law suits for some slight, especially for the secular holiday like Xmas. Or veterans paying respect for deceased vets.

DJ: You're not up on the news. GW Bush, over eight years, went to great lengths to blur and eradicate the line between religion and politics. The country is now polarized along religious/secular lines.
