May-08-2010 23:01TweetFollow @OregonNews Nadia Sindi for Eugene City CouncilTim King Salem-News.comEugene has a chance for real change with Nadia Sindi, but do the people have the guts, or will prejudice rule the day?
(EUGENE, Ore.) - A candidate running for Eugene City Council says those who take a moment to listen, quickly realize that their city may have a much better chance of dealing with the coming years with her in office. I admit I am biased because Nadia Sindi is a friend of mine, but she is a friend and someone I respect because of her values. I believe people in her ward have many things to consider. People complain about status quo, with the coming election they have an opportunity to break the cycle. Does Eugene have what it takes? Is the city really just a masquerade of progressive values? I don't know Eugene, as many times as I have been there, as many days as I have spent there. This supposedly liberal city has a history of shady police and even racism; no matter what people around the nation and world think about it. Nadia offered these reasons for her candidacy. 1. Why are you running? The vast majority of people, whether they are workers, students, or elderly receiving care, are more alike than different. We are more akin to a family than political parties would have us believe. I want to be a voice for those who do not feel adequately represented by party politics, a voice for the family that tries hard to earn an honest living yet—too frequently in our nation—suffers the decisions of public servants tempted and influenced by proximity to the business world. Politics has become a casino at the great expense of taxpayers, and it has stratified the people, not equalized them. The reality is that we are one large middle-class family, and we must deal honestly and bring our best selves forward or we will neither recover the original purpose of public service nor set the proper examples to produce a better world. I am running to fight for the great needs of the people so diminished by the spectacle and wasteful ways of politics today. 2. What is the most important issue for the city of Eugene? A) Public Safety Law enforcement is vital to the health of our community and to the pride we have in our community. Maintaining a positive bond with the public is a natural function of law enforcement that promotes openness by reflecting the good nature of the majority of our citizenry. It is this trust between law enforcement and the citizenry that generates the single identity of our community—a mutual bond that must be calmly preserved within the extremes of opinion and the boundaries of law. B) Downtown Economy It has been a national trend to allow large chain stores on the outskirts of town to eat away at locally owned centralized businesses. We must offset that trend by taking pride in our city and taking greater care in its long-term growth. Again, this is a family vs. money-influence equation—local stability vs. external exploitation—and as a family, we must have a strong and unified dedication and voice that protects us from such influence. So here is what the Eugene Weekly, supposedly a 'progressive newspaper' wrote about the office Nadia is running for: NONPARTISAN CITY OFFICES City Council Ward 5. Write in somebody "Voters in north Eugene’s Ward 5 don’t have much of a What a bunch of garbage, Nadia is extremely active in regard to politics and she is non-stop, constantly on the go, and every step she takes as a Muslim woman in Eugene is harder than it should be, and when the progressive news agencies are strangled by their own profound ignorance, or prejudice, or whatever in the Hell it may be, the citizens themselves are stepping further into the arena of hurt, the halls of governmental pain, because the bureaucrats rule the day in the so-called "Emerald City"... And this all is nothing new, because the so-called peace & progressive community spread the same information around about Nadia when she first ran for office in 2008. At that point, they said Nadia didn't have experience for County Commissioner. Her answer has been to learn and build political experience through immersion, and in the meanwhile she found 14 different opportunities to address the public in forums, about her ideas. That, along with her service over these years on committees, commissions and boards. I'm not surprised in a way, but I always remain hopeful that people in this somewhat famous home of the Oregon Ducks will have what it takes to step forward and be who they are supposed to be. Nadia holds great promise for the future of Eugene, if the good old boy media club doesn't band against her and reduce the possibility.
