(SALEM) - Sherry Fox, Director of the Wiener Laboratory at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, will discuss the study of human skeletal remains found at four Early Christian (4th Century A.D.) ecclesiastical sites in the country of Cyprus. By looking at the sex, age, diseases and trauma patterns of individuals on the island, Fox reveals an interesting picture of common burial customs. This lecture will be on April 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Paulus Lecture Hall at Willamette University’s College of Law. Sponsored by Willamette University’s Center for Ancient Studies and Archaeology and the Salem Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, the lecture is free and open to the public.

Fox’s lecture, “Sticks and Stones May Break Their Bones: Trauma Patterns in Early Christian Cyprus,” will examine how different trauma patterns have emerged between smaller, coastal sites when compared to the larger, inland site of the Hill of Agios Georgios. Analysis of the bones suggests that there are differences in trauma among inland and coastal populations. Fox will explore reasons why the coastal population has more severe trauma and multiple fractures than the inland population.

Fox is the director of the Weiner Laboratory, a department that conducts research in archaeological science, at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. The school strives to advance the knowledge of the history of Greece and other parts of the classical world, by training scholars, by supporting archaeological fieldwork, and by providing resources for scholarly researchers and the dissemination of their findings.
