529 Morsi Supporters Receive Death Sentences in Egypt Court

(CAIRO) - An Egyptian court has sentenced 529 supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi to death, the BBC reports.

This is the new Egypt that the western nations cheered into office. The sentences are a result of the so-called Arab Spring. The convictions and subsequent death sentences are for the murder of a policeman and other attacks against police.

As Salem-News.com clearly showed, the police in Egypt violently attacked their own citizens, relentlessly in many cases, during the protests at Tahrir Square.

BBC reports that the group is comprised of members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood. They are part of a larger trial involving more than 1200 people who supported Morsi.

Egypt has cracked down harshly on Islamists since Mr Morsi was removed in July. The government is working with Israel and has also halted movement through the tunnels into Gaza.

BBC reports that hundreds have been killed and thousands have been arrested.

The ruling was issued in a court in Minya, which is south of the capital, Cairo. The court's ruling was announced after only two court appearances. Attorneys for the defendants raised complaints over not having time to prepare their and present their case, the Associated Press reports.

The sentenced Egyptians had two protest camps, from where they demanded the reinstatement of Morsi. The alleged attacks reportedly happened in southern Egypt in August, when security forces broke up the two Cairo protest camps.

Hundreds died in the violence that followed.
