Dogface Soldiers

A Special Salute to My Infantry Buddies...

Combat Infantry Badge

(PORTLAND, OR) - Post Traumatic stress is one of the worst medical ailments of combat infantry. This is especially true for them, but also for emergency room personnel who continually play witness to severe trauma.

Most of the PTSD victims I have worked with are/were military... Army and Marines. This story is about the causes of Post Traumatic Stress and what it psychologically does to the victims, regardless of whether they are military or civilian, because civilians get PTSD too. This is about the events that cause PTSD, when you are sitting in a foxhole being shot at, or shooting at people.

We were that which others did not want to be.

We were that which others could never be.

We went where others would never go.

We kept going when others turned back.

We did that which others failed to do.

We asked nothing from those who gave nothing.

We reluctantly accepted the fear of eternal hell… if we failed.

We have seen the anguished face of raw terror.

We have felt the biting freezing cold of absolute fear.

We have also enjoyed the honey sweet taste of a moment of love.

We have cried in unrelenting pain.

We have cried in deep lonely anguish.

We have cried empty tears of dying hope.

We have survived without hope… but most of all,

We know not why, but…

We are alive. Others are not.

We have died a thousand times and lived one more.

We have lived lives best forgotten strangers say, but…

I am at last proud to say:

“I WAS A DOGFACE SOLDIER”

I was paid one dollar a day.

There's a website, PTSDSTRESS.COM that has an anonymous interactive computer program that reduces the symptoms of PTSD for the user. Developed in part by an NIH PTSD researcher/ doctor, the site uses eye movement. It's confidential, costs $10 per session and accepts credit cards but does not require a cardholder name adding further confidentiality. It has been used by military and non-military for over 4 years.
