(SALEM, Ore.) - The 7.6 earthquake struck southern Mexico today at 12:02 P.M. The epicenter was in Oaxaca, in the state of Guerrero,120 miles east of Acapulco.

Tens of thousands of people experienced swaying buildings in Mexico City and beyond, but damage has not been determined and there have been no injuries reported at this time. Still it has been a frightening day for Mexico.

The U.S. Geological Survey set the depth at 11 miles underground. Mexico's National Seismological Survey said the temblor had an epicenter southwest of Ometepec.

"Strategic services" such as the water systems are not experiencing problems according to information on Twitter from Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard.

The earthquake had been reported earlier at 7.9 magnitude, but the USGS corrected their results. Though the area is near the Pacific coast of Mexico, no tsunami is expected.
