Governor Proclaims Women's Military History Week in Oregon

An estimated 30,000 and 500,000 female service members were enlisted during World Wars I and II.

(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski has signed a proclamation designating the week of March 19th-23rd, as Women's Military History Week in Oregon.

For well over two centuries, America's military history is filled with women courageously answering the call of duty during our nation's darkest hours.

Since the American Revolution, women have enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces to help combat tyranny and preserve the country's freedoms.

The beginning of the 20th century marked the first time in American history thatthe military actively recruited women.

An estimated 30,000 and 500,000 female servicemembers were enlisted during World Wars I and II respectively, earning acclaim for their honorable service.

The Director of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs, Jim Willis, said throughout America's proud military history, courageous women have stepped forward to serve in the armed forces of the United States with honor and distinction.

"Women's military history is a story of inspiration and hope–of courage and tenacity. This week is dedicated to recalling, celebrating and saluting themany contributions of American women serving their country in uniform," Willis said. "Today women make up about one-sixth of the U.S. Armed Forces and serve in many far-reaching jobs. They are commanding and leading today's fightingforces worldwide, serving on land, sea and in the air while accomplishing duties that were once considered for men only," he added.

"We must continue to honor their service and never forget their sacrifices."

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation calling on the American people to remember the contributions of women.

By 1987, Congress and the President followed by declaring March as National Women's History Month.
