(SALEM, Ore.) - Rachel Corrie, a true hero in the eyes of millions around the world, was killed by the driver of an Israeli bulldozer as she tried with fellow activists from the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) to halt the destruction of an established Palestinian home in 2006.
The Israeli-influenced big corporate media groups have mostly kept this from Americans; Israeli 'settlers' have been squatting on Palestinian land, destroying family dwellings and encroaching more and more over the years on the tiny amount of remaining Palestinian land that has not already been taken by Israel.
Between 1947 and 1967, Israel took almost all of it.
Israel is guided by an extremist religious philosophy also widely taught in America called 'Zionism'. This is the belief that the Israelis are somehow entitled to take all of the land from its previous owners, over a Biblical prophecy. The idea stands in stark contrast to the spirit of a separate church and state, which the United States' government is founded upon.
U.S. politicians like Hillary Clinton, as recently as this week, confirmed the unwavering U.S. support of Israel. That, as Israel is investigated by a United Nations Tribunal for very serious international war crimes allegations stemming from the war in Gaza that Israel launched over the winter of 2008/2009.
Clinton would have you believe Rachel Corrie died in vain, not that she has probably ever recognized Rachel's life or death.
A debate rages over whether Rachel Corrie was right or wrong. Could she have been wrong? The answer is the same for justice, as a concept. Do you bother? Do you know right from wrong?
So the bigger question then would be, 'is it right to fight for the existence of people?'
When you find that answer, then you have the answer for this case.
For many of us, there is no question.
And that establishes the profound difference between people who appear the same, share the same land, and yet think in ways that are not similar at all.
Rachel Corrie was killed by the state of Israel, and by its brutal regime that practices not only 'mass punishment' but also 'ethnic cleansing'.
The same regime that has displaced over 4 million Palestinians, and killed countless thousands more. This is the same regime that from the beginning, has denied the right of self-determination to the Palestinian people.
A regime that systematically destroys the lives of innocents every single day.
Rachel Corrie's 5th Grade Speech "I'm here because I care" - tells a great deal about this young woman who attended Evergreen University, who gave her life to try to make life better for others.
The piece is taken from Occupation 101, an excellent documentary which is now available on DVD from Occupation101.com
First, here is footage from Rachel's interview conducted by Middle East Broadcasting Company on March 14th, 2003, two days before she was murdered by the Israeli Defense Forces.
Now see Rachel at the age of 10, in fifth grade, sharing her views on world peace, something she gave her life for: |

Tim, I need your help! The evil Zionists are coming to get me! I think a Mossad agent is hiding under my bed. Help!!!!!!!!

All she had to do was move out of the way and she'd still be alive. She was wrong then and she's still wrong now. Let the palestinians fight their own battles and mind your business. We wouldn't want foreigners coming to america to protest american domestic policy, americans shouldn't be going to other countries to fight that country's domestic policies.
One planet realist, wouldn't it suck if my country hadn't kicked the Nazi's ass and let the Jews free? Do you even begin to realize what a stinking ingrate that makes you sound like?
Oregon Reader March 20, 2010 1:29 pm (Pacific time)
Hey Jack, Look up Wikipedia's page on Zionism: Zionism is based on historical ties and religious traditions linking the Jewish people to the Land of Israel. With the Zionists, you are either pro-Israel or you are a modern NAZI. They don't seem to allow for other dissenting opinions. And this young lady held a dissenting view. I, for one, believe that the Palestinian people were given the shaft and have been treated unfairly for generations now.
Oregon Reader March 20, 2010 3:17 am (Pacific time)
While the burning of a paper flag may be in poor and immature taste, it does not warrant the blatant murder of her. Many people burned REAL flags during 'Nam demonstrations. I don't think that they should have been summarily executed like the students at Kent State. This young lady was clearly following her beliefs and, right or wrong, she was not using violence.

mr king, so when caught in a lie, all you can say is, "if she did, she did"? you have no grasp of history or facts.
you owe the jack an apology it may not have been an actual american flag, but it was drawn by one of the palestinian children to represent that flag.
Tim King: You know Joe, at least realize that you were able to cite something and that it is here for others to see. Looks like you were right, but I am deflecting so many falsehoods along with way with this story that I have to keep my guard up. It is not my wish to portray anything for less than it is. Are you familiar with the images of the little Israeli girls painting messages on the bombs that were dropped on Lebanon in 2006? These kids should not be hung out to dry I suppose; it is certainly the type of problem you see on all sides.

Tim King: It looks like a piece of paper, but if she did she did. The United States pays for Israel's destruction, I guess that must have been on her mind.

would be nice if this piece was factually acurate. from 47-67, the areas known as the west bank and gaza were occupied by jordan and egypt. israel took no land at that time. additionally, it needs to be noted that not one un resolution was passed during that period demanding that either country remove themselves from the illegal occupation. mr king, are you really a journalist?
Tim King: Oh come on Joe, the UN was not behind this. We are not talking about West Bank and Gaza, we're talking about everywhere else. You know, you have seen the progressive maps. Israel increasingly occupied the whole of Palestine with Gaza and West Bank as the exceptions. Yes Jordan and Egypt were of different mindsets then, especially Egypt. They're bought and paid for today. There are also huge questions over the 1967 war itself, whether it was simply an excuse used for a land grab. Egypt was attacked because they were having a military training operation near the Israeli border and Israel said they were about to be attacked, so they struck preemptively. The one thing I know is that the U.S.S. Liberty was attacked repeatedly one day by Israeli fighter jets and navy vessels. Isn't that a Hell of a thing joe? Your namesake hadn't even been out of it all that long when that took place. American sailors were mowed down, murdered by Israel, and the influence of Israel on the U.S. was enough to just sweep it along. Well, many people have never forgotten, and my article on this lays it down: Sep-13-2006: The Day Israel Attacked the United States - Tim King Salem-News.com

If my memory serves me correctly, the murderous driver was a Russian immigrant to Israel. I am pretty sure the recent interview with Rachel's parents on Democracy Now mentioned this. It is probably also in the documentary about her life.
Tim King: Yes, that is my understanding also.
Oregon Reader March 18, 2010 10:01 am (Pacific time)
I have never cried when reading about a news story before, but reflecting on this matter, and after reading the words she wrote in the email below, caused me to shed many tears. A very sad ending to a life filled with hope. You do not find many willing to actually travel from the safety of their homes to attempt to do something so heroic. I hope a movie is based on her life story so that Americans can feel what it must have been like when we were the ones fighting for our freedom.

I disagree that there is a debate about whether Rachel Corrie was right or wrong. She was right, clearly right, the zionist propaganda campaign would have us question our own eyes and ears.
Jack March 18, 2010 7:39 am (Pacific time)
This assay does nothing to promote peace in the area and just inflames hate and antisemitism. Rachel was photographed numerous times burning the American flag. Her organization, ISM is funded by our Saudi 'friends'. Her death was an unfortunate accident and a direct result of being in a restricted military and demolition zone. Interestingly her 'killer' is an Arab Israeli serving in the IDF. Finally, Zionism was never a religious ideology.
Tim King: Probably good that we're not standing in the same room right about now Jack. Rachel Corrie was not ever photographed burning an American flag you worthless POS. Your stupid racist policies of murder and elimination of the Palestinian people is what caused Rachel's death. She was a thousand times the person that anyone who even thinks like you would be. That bulldozer operator wasn't negligent, he was simply a killer. He decided to run her down, teach these peace activists a lesson, that's about it. Only an idiot with a morally corrupt soul would have been driving the bulldozer in the first place, with an express purpose of making Palestinian people homeless, and STEALING MORE OF THEIR LAND. But he did it knowing that murdering a Palestinian is kind of like a white person in the U.S. Murdering a black person up to, say, fourty or fifty years ago..
Erik of the south March 18, 2010 6:06 am (Pacific time)
If you look at the video when she is ten even the most simple mind can hear this is not a speech written by a 10 year old, but by an adult. In both videos it is clear she has no full understanding of BOTH sides of this conflict. She is a product of brainwashing. She has obviously learned this from her short sighted ( or one sided) parents. I hope they are happy with themselves.
Tim King: Erik, isn't that what the Nazi's said, "Yah.... you guys just don't understand" I think the only thing that matters is that Rachel Corrie was a bright and articulate person who was a hero in the eyes of many, standing up to the brutal Israeli genocidal mania that is both dirty and evil. Nobody gets away with this sh#t forever. The irony of reading ridiculous material that is clearly from a hateful Zionist perspective is that you call this one in a million hero brainwashed, when you were friggin' born brainwashed. You probably never have thought for yourself, you should not weigh in on things that border on sacred, you are a sheep and an Israeli genocide defender. I hope you are happy with the vast amount of press that Rachel's death did generate and continues to generate. I hope you like the added clarity that all of this brings to Israel's goals and plans and aspirations. Anywhere along the way they could have backed off, but oh no.... the Zionists want it all, they think they are part of a supreme race and that is a damned sick joke. 'Chosen' to become murderers and twisted genocidal bandits, now that I believe.

Rachel made a mistake. She should have made sure the people were out of the house she was trying to save. Lifes including rachel are more important than houses! The driver should be in jail for the rest of his life!

"Israeli 'settlers' have been squatting on Palestinian land and encroaching more and more over the years on the tiny amount of remaining Palestinian land" WHEN IN HISTORY WAS IT PALESTINIAN!? GET YOUR FACTS STRAIHGT!
Tim King: It all began in 1947, read any historical account of the formation of Israel and you will understand.

Excerpts from an article titled: A Prayer for Rachel Corrie by the the Opinion Editor, Khaleej Times, one of the leading English Daily Newspapers in the Gulf and Middle East. In a poignant email to her parents on February 7, 2003, she wrote: “I have been in Palestine for two weeks, and I still have very few words to describe what I see. I don’t know if the children here have ever existed without tank-shell holes in their walls and the towers of an occupying army surveying them constantly. Even the smallest of these children understand that life is not like this everywhere. An 8-year-old was shot and killed by an Israeli tank two days before I got here, and many of the children murmur his name to me, Ali. The children also love to get me to practise my limited Arabic by asking me “Kaif Sharon?” “Kaif Bush?” and they laugh when I say “Bush Majnoon,” “Sharon Majnoon” back in my limited Arabic. (How is Sharon? How is Bush? Bush is crazy. Sharon is crazy.) “Nevertheless”, I think about the fact that no amount of reading, documentary viewing and word of mouth could have prepared me for the reality of the situation here. You just can’t imagine it unless you see it, and even then you are always well aware that your experience is not at all the reality. I wonder if you can forgive the world for all the years of your childhood spent existing in resistance to the constant stranglehold of the world’s fourth largest military—backed by the world’s only superpower—in its attempt to erase you from your home.” Rachel Corrie arrived in Gaza in January 2003 and she was killed in cold blood seven weeks later on March 16, 2003. The sacrifices of blessed and generous spirits like Rachel Corrie will not go in vain though. They never do. Innocent blood never remains dormant. What relation did Rachel have with the Palestinians? She had nothing in common with them – faith, language, culture or colour. The only bond she shared with them was that of humanity. Yet she died for them. Will the Maker of this world allow this ultimate, sublime sacrifice squandered? I don’t thinks so. This long night of oppression cannot last forever and hope will dawn out of this river of blood. God bless you Rachel Corrie and may your tribe forever grow! - Aijaz Zaka Syed, Dubai
