(NEWPORT) - Oregon State Police (OSP), with the assistance of the Lincoln County Crash Team, is continuing the investigation into Friday evening's two vehicle fatal traffic crash that occurred on Highway 20 at the entrance to Ellmaker State Park near Burnt Woods. The crash resulted in the death of a 64-year old Springfield man. According to Sergeant Cari Boyd, on March 14, 2014 at approximately 6:41 p.m., a 1999 Dodge pickup driven by RICHARD L. BARNEY, age 63, from Albany, was westbound on Highway 20 near milepost 32 approaching the intersection for Ellmaker State Park. A 1994 Mitsubishi pickup driven by Jerry Francis McLaughlin of Springfield, pulled up to the stop sign and then into the westbound lane where it was struck in the driver's side by the Dodge pickup. Both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane. CPR efforts at the scene on Mr. McLaughlin was attempted but he was pronounced deceased. BARNEY and his 63-year old wife/passenger were not injured. All persons involved in the crash were using safety restraints. OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Trooper Mike Hansen is the lead investigator. Members of the interagency Lincoln County Crash Team came to the scene to assist OSP. Agencies with representatives of the team were Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Newport Police Department, and Lincoln City Police Department. Also assisting at the scene was Toledo Fire Department, Lincoln County District Attorney's Office, Lincoln County Medical Examiner, and ODOT. The highway was closed for about 30 minutes and then open to one lane for the next five hours during the investigation and clearance of the scene. Source: Oregon State Police
