Senate Bill to Limit Magazines Expected to Fail

Showdown at the DC Corral, as NRA uses threatening terms in stating their opposition.

Man with assault weapon

(SACRAMENTO, CA) - A Presidential bid to renew a ban against military-style assault weapons was narrowly backed by the Senate Judiciary Committee today. The bill now moves to the full Senate, where it is expected to fail due to strong opposition from the GOP and several democrats. The measure would also limit high-capacity ammunition clips to 10 bullets.

The United States has an overwhelming rate of murders carried out with firearms, when compared to a large number of nations. The National Rifle Association (NRA) has clearly stated that they want no limitations on military assault magazines of any type. At the same time, the NRA wants armed police and security officers in every school in America.

The NRA continues to warn Americans that the government wants to take their shotguns and weapons of all types. They equate legislation in certain states to some type of some sort of gun grab planned by Obama. Lest we forget they have been crying about Obama taking their guns since he first entered office, the NRA's Wayne Lapierre relies on fear tactics and they say their membership is growing steadily.

"Legislation has been proposed in Missouri and Minnesota that requires law-abiding gun owners like you and me to surrender thousands of rifles, shotguns and handguns from their personal collections. Guns that were passed down to them by fathers and grandfathers. Guns legitimately owned, legally purchased — until the government decided otherwise."

Lapierre says the NRA is dead set against background checks. But mostly, right now, they are rallying against what seems a simple bill, to limit magazines for assault weapons to ten rounds.

"If they limit our access to semi-automatic technology and high-capacity magazines, they limit our ability to defend ourselves. And they don't have the right to take that right away!

The media called me crazy when I said that given a second term, Obama would come after our guns. Okay, I was wrong. He did it BEFORE his second term had even officially begun."

Speaking in regard to the bill, President Barack Obama said today:

"I thank the Senate for taking another step forward in our common effort to help reduce gun violence by advancing a bill that would reinstate and strengthen a ban on the sale of military-style assault weapons and set a 10-round limit for magazines. These weapons of war, when combined with high-capacity magazines, have one purpose: to inflict maximum damage as quickly as possible. They are designed for the battlefield, and they have no place on our streets, in our schools, or threatening our law enforcement officers."

"The Senate has now advanced legislation addressing three of the most important elements of my proposal to help reduce the epidemic of gun violence in this country. Now the full Senate and the House need to vote on this bill, as well as the measures advanced in the past week that would impose serious penalties on anyone who buys a gun as part of a scheme to arm criminals, improve school safety, and help keep guns out of the hands of criminals, people with a severe mental illness, and others who shouldn’t have them. Each of these proposals deserves a vote."

The National Rifle Association's Lapierre, cites Obama for talking about school safety after Sandy Hook, and then failing to address the subject during his national address.

However his words toward Obama and U.S. legislation are threatening. It is one thing to say you will stand and fight and a political activist, and an entirely different matter when you represent the NRA which, represents, particularly in the southern states, a high contingent of racists among supporters and members.

"And for our Second Amendment freedom, Mr. President, WE WILL STAND AND FIGHT! We will not be duped by the hypocrisy in the White House or the Congress who would deny our right to semi-automatic technology and all the magazines we need to defend ourselves and our families.

"Mr. President, the National Rifle Association is nearly 5 million members strong, and growing by tens of thousands every day. We will continue to support what will work to make our children and our families safer. And what you failed to even mention in your speech — fixing our broken mental health system ... and we will fight for swift, certain punishment of every criminal that touches a gun ... and because millions of our children remain today as vulnerable and unprotected as ever — we renew our call for armed police and security officers in every school in America.

"When it comes to keeping our kids safe at school, nothing else matters."

It seems Lapierre is a zealot and unwilling to even talk about the most minimal compromise, his tactics leave many questions.
