(SALEM, Ore.) - In response to Oregon House Bill 2500, the State of Oregon has made available extensive data on state expenditures for the first time. This data is available in raw formats at www.oregon.gov/transparency/.

Representative Kim Thatcher, one of the co-sponsors of HB 2500 who sits on the advisory committee for the website, explained that the state has every intention of making the existing transparency site more accessible and easier to use for members of the general public. However, due to the extremely tight budget situation at this time, they were not able to allocate any additional funds for developing the transparency website. This created a void for Oregon citizens.

In answer to that dilemma, to make the expenditure data released by the state more accessible to the public, Salem-News.com has launched the Salem-News.com: Oregon Transparency Project.

"This is a very important base of information for Oregonians," said Salem-News.com Publisher Bonnie King. "We are pleased to offer a service that will encourage citizens to learn more about what's happening in their state government." "The Oregon Transparency Project was created by business reporter Ersun Warnke. He saw a need, and filled it. The project uses the data made available by the State at their transparency website, put together in a very user-friendly application," King said.

Data on state expenditures and employee salaries has been combined into one comprehensive database for easy access. This data has been placed into an interface that allows it to be easily searched, browsed, and sorted.

It is our hope that this website will be a valuable resource for everyone who is interested in researching state government spending.

"It's a great chance for citizens to answer some of their own questions. Too often there are disagreements that could be easily resolved with the right resource. The Oregon Transparency Project is just such an answer," said Bonnie King.

"I think people will be surprised at what they learn. It's a very intriguing list of information, and certainly is a great conversation starter. It's really good for people to have the facts when they have discussions about state government -- now they will."

Tim et al: Noting like keeping level of professional perceptions in natural order...that's order, not odor, which cometh from such trolls !! Their behavior here simply shows arrogant contempt for the First Amendment, carrying some strong responsibilities as well as providing essential rights.

Carl:
Sir, you speak of "your state" as if NOT an OREGONIAN.
Then you spend your two cents worth deriding and denigrating national leaders with nothing but loose-lip too familiar venom and notorious non-charges, such as closed door for work done in public with skilled reporters at work for full disclosure.

SO perhaps you will stuff it where it will never see the sunshine you mention...might work fine since you are surely of "conservative" bent !!!
The last-word says it supremely for such as you sticking long nose into another state's business, proving up precisely that-word.

IF by odd chance you are an Oregonian, ID self to editor for direct contact and we can dialog in depth, detail and damned differentiations re your bent.

Tim King: Hank, for the record Carl is another reincarnation of that same GOP troll that we have had smelling up the place for years.  Consider this his sign off.  He'll disappear for a while, some back slowly and start out acting like a cool person, and then move back into his old character.  Bye bye Carl, it's been real, and nice, but it hasn't been real nice.

Kim Thatcher is the brightest star in Oregon's group of all elected officals. I have always found that it is the conservatives who try to bring sunshine to the political process while the others do their thing behind closed doors in the dead of night on a weekend no less. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have many like-minded types attempting to hide their sleazy procedures here in my state. They are usually interlopers from other states.

This demanded new service is precisely what ANY daily with real dedication to community service should be providing. WHY wait all these years for paper-side to print public-$$ iformation in depth and design to be meaningful and make real difference in clearer public understandings of unavoidably complex issues, needs, and the policy decisions demanded ? E.W. will do us all proud on this one...

Sweet ! I take it this will be without triple and quadrupal entries that make it allmost impossible to sort out .Dont forget the most important part . How many agencies are getting paid for no-show employees .You know the trick where they get state funds for X employees but there are allways less on staff than that yet they still get that money . My father in law used to work for accounting in the state and he says thats a big deal .
