'Startling Breakthrough' - Baby With H.I.V. Cured

More than three million children globally are living with H.I.V.

Doctor

(NEW YORK) - An infant with H.I.V. infection has successfully been cured according to an article today in the New York Times.

The news was reported Sunday as a "startling breakthrough" expected to bring a reduction to the number of children afflicted with H.I.V. whih has the potential to cause AIDS.

In this case, the treatment was initiated just 30 hours after birth, which is unusual, however experts say that if the same results are found while treating other infants, the treatment will be recommended globally.

That is important according to statistics from the United Nations which place the number of children born with H.I.V. in 2011 at 330,000.

The agency states that more than three million children globally are living with H.I.V.

The child that was cured of H.I.V. was born in rural Mississippi, however testing continues and some results are still pending.

NPR reports that the child's blood samples from before and after treatment corroborate the findings.

If it all pans out, this will be the second person cured from H.I.V. which many had previously determined was physically impossible.

The first to be cured was Timothy Brown, in Berlin, who is described as a middle-aged man with leukemia. Brown received a bone-marrow transplant from a donor genetically resistant to H.I.V. infection.
