Single Car Crash Turns Fatal

The Tualatin Police Department encourages all drivers to remain safe at all times, drive sober, and obey the speed limits.

(TUALATIN, Ore.) - One person died in a single car crash last night in Tualatin. Police officers responded to a single car crash on SW Grahams Ferry Road at SW Sitka Court, in Tualatin at 10:43 p.m.

The vehicle was occupied by the driver, identified as 19-year old Jose Manuel Hernandez Bailon, and the passenger, identified as 19-year old Michael Figueroa.

"The vehicle, a red 1994 Honda Accord, appeared to have been traveling north on SW Grahams Ferry Road at a high rate of speed," Jennifer Massey with Tualatin Police said.

"As the vehicle rounded the curve, just south of SW Sitka Court, the driver lost control and struck the fence line, then a tree. The vehicle rolled an unknown number of times before it landed on its top, entrapping the occupants of the vehicle."

Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue arrived on scene and extricated the occupants of the vehicle, Massey said.

The driver, Mr. Hernandez Bailon, was transported by Life Flight to OHSU with critical injuries. The passenger, Mr. Figueroa, was transported by ambulance to Emanual Hospital in stable condition.

Police were later informed that Mr. Hernandez Bailon died as a result of his injuries. Mr. Figueroa suffered a broken nose. Police determined that Mr. Hernandez Bailon's blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit at the time of the crash.

The Washington County Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team responded to the scene of the crash and performed an in depth investigation and reconstruction of this crash. SW Grahams Ferry Road was closed for approximately five hours during the investigation. It was officially reopened just after 4:00 a.m.

- I have learned to never drink and drive. Bailon’s mistake to drive while intoxicated endangered the life of his friend and caused his own death. He would still be alive if he had just made the right decision. He should have let his sober friend Figueroa to dive for him.
