(SALEM, Ore. ) - Get your team together now for the Salem-Keizer 24-hour Relay for Life. This years event will take place at the Chemawa Indian School, and will begin with a ceremony honoring cancer survivors at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19. Recognizing that cancer does not sleep, the event will go around the clock and ends at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, July 20. During the Relay, 100 or more teams will have at least one member walking the track at all times. There will be a timed 5K Run/Walk event that will begin at midnight on July 19. Relay For Life is a community activity for the whole family. The event recognizes those who have battled cancer, remembers loved ones lost, and empowers all to fight back against the disease. According to event co-chair Jamy Tipton, “Today, 400 people are not dying from cancer every single day. Someday there will be a cure. But someday cannot come too soon”. My Mom is a breast cancer survivor, so I absolutely support y'alls attempts to empower folks with cancer and help find a cure. That said, the American Cancer Society (Relay for Life) spends only 26% of its national multi-billion $ budget on actual medical research. Of that 26%, most of it goes into animal research which is cruel and does not produce results. According to the Food and Drug Administration, 92% of medications that tested safe and effective in animals, showed to be detrimental to human safety. These invasive tests steal baby kittens, puppies and other animals from their mothers where they are routinely tortured until they die :(
