Ann Coulter: When Does This Crap End? (VIDEO)

(SALEM, Ore.) - When we grow up we are taught the difference between right and wrong. Well before reaching adulthood, we are supposed to have a sound understanding of the bottom line, and a reasonable appreciation for the fact that mistakes carry consequences.

But moral decay, divisiveness and polarity are the order of the day in 2007. As a society, it seems like we no longer aspire to be chivalrous. Instead we go for the most outrageous, the most shocking, the most revealing, and the least-clothed.

And networks give time to a media whore who taunts people over the death of their child, calls the widows of 9/11 firemen in New York "Greedy Witches", and states on national television that she hopes a leading politician will die in a terrorist attack.

It brings us to that rotten speck on the TV screen; a tortured soul called Ann Coulter, "Nazi Bitch" as she is known on countless Websites, and she brings us all a particular kind of shame that can't be contained in the continental United States.

The news in recent weeks has been packed with death and murder and tragedy. The rate of soldiers dying in Iraq is climbing, murders and random crimes are growing, and the national media's sense of self regulation is nowhere to be seen.

When students are gunned down on a college campus; shot dead, we cry as a national family. But Ann Coulter can verbalize her wishes for the murder of a high level public official, John Edwards, and FOX News goes on writing her paychecks.

Do Coulter supporters want the same threats to be leveled at politicians they support? If it isn't OK to scream fire in a theater, then how does this twisted person get away with this garbage?

Well, that's simple... The wicked witch of the far right and FOX News is willing to exploit her good figure and she has long blonde hair. Sorry, but Coulter is the epitome of people in TV news that only exist because of their appearance. If she was homely and overweight, would she have this stage?

Somebody has to put things into perspective, because the luxury ride of American supremacy is over, and we have pulled out all the stops that once kept people like Coulter in better places, like jail. A time period when people felt compelled to be respectful and decent is growing smaller in the rear view mirror.

And it is more than a theory that world admiration for the United States has flown out the door, and now other nations are watching a diabolical pawn named Coulter getting what seems to be increasing time on the air.

In the two featured video clips, you can see Coulter at her worst, or at least what we hope is her worst.

She is a modern day incarnation of Jane Fonda's personality during the Vietnam War, a blasted traitor with disregard for the bond that is supposed to unite all Americans.

And that illustrates the most important thing that we all should feel obligated to remember; that this is not about right and left folks, it is about right and wrong.

It's also about the increasingly unethical behavior of media bullies who distance themselves farther from the truth, or any concern for Americans, with each passing day.

A former employer of Coulter's, Jonah Goldberg with National Review Online, described what it was like to work with her, "she behaved with a total lack of professionalism, friendship, and loyalty".

USA Today gave her the boot shortly after hiring her to cover the 2004 Democratic National Convention. She wrote one article that began, "Here at the Spawn of Satan convention in Boston..."

Some suggest that Coulter is similar in many respects to members of the Westboro Baptist Church out of Topeka, Kansas. They are known for their anti-gay protests and taunts of grieving family members at military funerals.

The bizarre and hateful church group and Coulter have become the two most covered national phenomena's that fully go for the throat of people when they have to bury their own children.

The Westboro Baptist Church does it so they can sue governments that allow them to be assaulted while they assert their civil rights.

One primary focus of Coulter's bad energy has been Senator John Edwards. In the past she has called him "faggot", now she says on national television that she hopes he is assassinated by terrorists. Here is the clip where she uses the reference "faggot".

This week on MSNBC's "Hardball," Elizabeth Edwards called in to the show to ask Coulter to stop making personal attacks on her husband, Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards.

She also called Coulter out for the tormenting remarks she made previously made about John Edwards having placed a bumper sticker on his car referencing his dead son.

"You had a column a number of years ago which made fun of Charlie Dean's death and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on his car that said 'ask me about my dead son.'"

Then as Mrs. Edwards tried to talk to Coulter about her dead son, a heckler yelled from the crowd, "Why isn't John Edwards making this call?" which Coulter then parroted as a response instead of addressing her cruel error. Watch the third video clip below:

It was a classic extension of the "sex sells" world that she hails from. Others call it Hollywood. Wear a low cut blouse and rely on a crowd heckler for your dialog on national TV, what a lousy act Ann Coulter is.

It is reported that response on MSNBC's political blog Wednesday was so heavy it crashed the server. People are angry and Coulter's presence on national TV is visible far outside our national borders.

In strange irony, the problems between Coulter's ability to remain decent in the TV industry and the Edwards family, are an unseen benefit for his presidential candidacy.

Elizabeth Edwards sent an e-mail to supporters Wednesday morning that included a clip of their exchange and a donation request. Though they declined to name the total, the campaign said they raised more money this week than from any previous e-mail campaign.

"I think when they engage in these attacks and use the language of hate, it's very important to stand up,'" Edwards said. "What happens if you are silent when this kind of hateful language is used - not just by her, but by anyone - hate gets a foothold."

Edwards pointed out that Coulter's attacks haven't been limited to him, but also included his rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination. Coulter has made fun of Hillary Rodham Clinton's legs and compared Barack Obama to terrorists because his middle name is Hussein.

"What she said about Senator Clinton and Senator Obama is outrageous,'' Edwards stated Wednesday. ``And somebody has to stand up when she makes these kind of attacks."

People seem to be waking up to the fact that we all have a lot in common in this country. We may have different backgrounds, but we are supposed to have a red white and blue bond, and it doesn't take a genius to spot a bad apple on a tree. Corporations supporting Coulter need to withdraw their support. People can call Crown Forum Publishing and Random House and tell them to drop their contract with Coulter.

Remember the censorship that has gone on in recent years over people who criticize the Bush Administration; the Dixie Chicks, Bill Mahr being canned from TV because he suggested that the terrorists who took their own lives to kill Americans were not cowards, and who can forget the whole country coming unglued over Janet Jackson's nipple making national airwaves.

With respect to Coulter's criminal statements about seeing Edwards die at the hands of terrorists; in all my life, I have never seen such contradictions.

Above all, FOX News is behind the rise of Coulter's attacks on our lingering decency. I have no doubt that the day will come when lies and blatant inaccuracy in news can again be sanctioned and at least disciplined. Even with public officials, there is a line drawn long ago in the sand, and I predict that Coulter is eventually going to be slammed by a huge wave that will sweep her kind out to sea forever.

She had been talking about a double-standard, as a liberal had recently said (on stage at a concert) that he wished Bush was killed in a terrorists assassination plot. About that reference to Bill Maher, here's what Maher actually said:"BILL MAHER, HOST, HBO'S "REAL TIME": I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power people wouldn't be dying needlessly tomorrow. If he did die, other people — more people would live. That's a fact." Maher was talking about a free speech issue--removal of other people's posts on Ariana Huffington's site. Do you REALLY think that's the same thing as saying Cheney should be assassinated? As usual Coulter just twists the words of others to justify her own hateful comments.

Despite your claims of Ann being heinous-looking (which have WHAT to do with the issues), it really isn't true - she's generally pleasant-looking although a bit too skinny for my taste, and no she doesn't have a prominent adam's apple. As to Ann's proclivity to say controversal things, yes she does, although Tim King's attempt at misconstruing what she actually did say is beyond the pale of honesty and decency. It is now quite clear thar what she did say about Edwards being assasinated was tongue-in-cheek sarchasm based on the Left's capacity to completely overlook Bill Mahr's statement about Dick Cheney. Apparently, you make Ann's point better than she ever could, i.e., that you will overlook the flagrant nastiness of your own while she isn't supposed to be able to point out what you refuse to. Nope, Ann's legit criticism of Mahr and the left was obscured by a deliberate distortion. A shame, really.

Anne Coulter is mostly correct on the issues most of the time. However, she has become increasingly angry, hateful, harmful and showing "humor" far from funny. It's understandable though. She is a passionate voice believing in her convictions surrounded by many people who are outrageously evil, lying, manipulative and disgusting on the other side of the issues. Where is the outrage from the left over the many outrageous, disgusting and distorted reality comments arising from Pelosi, Reid and their minions? Saying its about right and wrong versus right and left is fine. But without consistently pointing out terrible behavior on both sides of the aisle it is simply a nice platitude.

This column is a simple lie, and it is fooling simple people. Coulter didn't call for assasination attempts on Edwards, as anyone with a modicum of intelligence can discern. Tim King is smart enough to know the truth here. That makes him a liar. Why is it that the people on the fringes of political ideology are so angry. Everyone has some legitimacy to what they think and say, but people like Ann and Rush, and I am sure there are some on the left as well, just seem so angry and negative. Years ago I watched Rush Limbaugh a couple of times, and I thought that he had some right on his side for some of his comments (no pun intended) but the whole monolog was couched in an overwhelming anger that seemed to permiate everything he said. Ann seems very much to be cut form the same mold. I wonder if these people were very unpopular in middle school and have never gotten over the anger and frustration of that experience. I would really love to see FCC regulations that required a level of review of what reporters said on TV. If the reporter or commentator said something for which they had no proof they could be fined, sort of like being charged with libel.

Mark, One of the recent somewhat heated stories I wrote earlier this month was about how the Oregon Guard soldiers I was embedded with in Afghanistan last year, were being corralled behind a barbed wire fence at Fort Carson, Colorado as a welcome home present on their return from the war.

Why? Because of a single incident in that town involving a drunken soldier who got out of line after returning from the war. For that reason, all returning members of the 41st Combat Brigade Team are being fenced in a compound several miles from the base's mainside with a guard: Oregon Troops Home From War are Under Lockdown at Fort Carson

This story is an example of me sticking up for my Oregon brothers, and being branded as a liberal by news readers because I dared to criticize the Army's wisdom in treating guard soldiers, war veterans, like animals.

Then this story about how our country is taking trusty AK-47's away from Afghan and Iraqi soldiers and giving them our complicated and sanitation sensitive M-16 saw me branded as a liberal again. If speaking out against greed and stupidity is liberal then you have me dead to rights: American Military Ego Will Lead to Problems As We Replace Iraq and Afghanistan's Army's AK-47 with the M-16

So, I guess I would just say again that this is not about liberal versus conservative.

I guess the assertion that I drop to the level of the accused may be true, but it is hard to resist when faced with things like Coulter. Many of us believe her statements soil our reputation as a country, one that many of us still believe strongly in for all the good things we have done.

I also note that you and others apparently choose to overlook the Jane Fonda correlation; I cite that again as proof that this is not about politics, it is about decency or a lack of it, in media.

If she truly discussed the issues intelligently and with civility, no one would know who she is because she doesn't have much of anything to say. She markets herself very effectively in this regard. The question is, how much longer does she have in the limelight? Maybe not much longer because her schtick seems to be wearing thin.

If you're so (rightly) upset at this age's uncivil discourse you'd be better to level your writing against ALL offenders -- not just those with whom you disagree politically. If your beef is the "crap" that's being spewed these days, then harp on that. You lose credibility when you criticize the state of "moral decay" and "polarization" yet succumb to those very traits yourself in your article ("Nazi bitch", "media whore", etc) and with no mention of the others like Rosie and Maher that are in exactly the same boat as is Coulter.

The thing that amazes me is that there are a variety of quality debates that take place on PBS, NPR, and CSPAN that very few watch or listen to. In these forums, they actually have experts with real analysis who respect one another. But rational debate of real issues doesn't attract crowds and people are disinterested in discussions that require prior knowledge about economics, history, political science, etc. Instead, they want to hear somebody with an appearance of education call somebody they don't like a "faggot." This is true on both sides (Ann Coulter, Michael Moore, Bill O'Reilly, Bill Maher, etc.). It's Jerry Springer political debate.

The word "sanctioned" in the last paragraph, is misused. To "sanction" is to "to give effective or authoritative approval or consent to".

Ann Coulter has nothing to bring to the debate, in fact she never did. Her outrageous behaviour and her stuck in the 80's, recycled cocktail dress is what does it for the neo con boys who gravitate/masterbate to her. They are so predictable. LOL It is one thing to have an idea about changing something - it is quite another to suggest that by putting rat poisin in someones soup you can. Ann you have been irrelevant for quite some time. I think your supporters are coming to terms with that and it's making them yell so loud. Who will fill that "I hate everyone who's not white" place?

A point that is being missed by the right is that yes, Bill Mahr made those comments, Bill Mahr is a comedian! He is not trying to make serious points on "News" networks. Those who listen to him, want to and pay to see it on HBO. This is not BS that is spread like a virus to the American public via network TV. Let's keep things in a proper prospective!

Both have figured out that controversy increases sales of their books etc. Neither of them have an interest in the well being of the American public. i am a democrat, actively serving in the national guard with a short tour in iraq. i love my country. period. i chose to set aside the liberty of deciding individally how i serve because it is more important to me that i serve. i set aside political preferences that are quite secondary to my responsibility to my comrades in arms. it is reprehensible that a party would foist these fetid rants and diatribes upon the public and then have the audacity to maintain their stance that it is comedy. it is not and none of the validated vapidly vain who have found a home in the nest of miscreants perceive it as humor. it is the personification of the utter contempt the previously marginalized have for whichever aspect of our nation they personally despise. there is no hate within the republican party for any group of people in the world that comes close to their blatant hatred for their domestic political adversaries. it is insulting, disgraceful and dishonorable.

She was making a reference to another talking head (a liberal) who wished the VP was killed in Afghanistan. So she said in jest, "I guess I'll just have to wish Edwards is killed in a terrorist bombing" which is EXACTLY what the liberal said. I don't recall Tim King saying THAT was totally out of line. I don't recall the left wing crying foul at wishing our VP had died in a near miss with a terrorist bombing. If not for hypocrisy, their would be no Democrat party. Why not ACTAULLY LISTEN TO WHAT SHE SAID AND THINK FOR YOURSELVES!

Ann Coulter has never had anything legitimate to say. If she ever did it was so drowned in her bile as to become unrecognizeable as such. I agree she is a national embarassment. She is like a moronic bully who sees an intelligent person do or say something and then thinks they are slick when they make a fool out of themselves trying to twist it to their agenda. Kinda like when the bully tries to taunt the kid of a woman in the military by saying "your mom wears combat boots". Hello! So what? I see her antics as just modern day examples of the tactics of Goebbels and the rest of the Nazi political propaganda machine. They certainly share the aspect of taking advantage of the generally low intellect, education and thought ability of the dyed in the wool conservatives to whom she plays to. In other words the 15-20% of the electorate to whom conservatives can do no wrong and 'liberals; can do no right. And I'm not saying thee is not an equally idiotic group of 15-20% on the other end of the political spectrum. If the media stopped giving 95% of the air-time to those two segments and instead like it used to focussed on the 60-70% in the middle not only would discourse be much more civil, it would be much more legitimate and rational as well. But I do find it interesting how Coulter looks the part of the Nazi frau including the cadaverous eyes. Maybe that is just me, but I always expect to see her put a swastika band on her arm.

It appears that when the left go off the deep end; Ward Churchill, the Boulder public school system, Bill Maher and many others, the left wing media, such as the Salem-News either justifies their madness or accepts their position. When a right wing person get even close to the madness of the left, the newspaper explodes its coverage and demonizes the person. Ann is not as bad as Bill Maher, or Rose, or Ward. The only thing I am thankful for is that the fairnes doctrine applies across all media - i.e. the only balance to papers such as the Salem-News is talk radio.

Dear Tim and those commenting, Many comments here refer to Ann Coulter’s quote that “...Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack...” Have any of you who believe this statement from Ann to be the truth, taken the time to find evidence to support her claim? If you find it, would you share it with the rest of us? I found a transcript of a discussion between Joe Scarborough, Bill Maher, John Ridley, and Barney Frank. Obviously, from written words, you can’t always tell about the tone or inflection of what was verbalized. The four men were talking about an un-named online reader’s comments. The reader-commenter had “...expressed regret that the attack on Dick Cheney failed.” John Ridley stated, “They” (the online commenter) said “We wish he would die.” The referenced reader’s comments were deleted from the site. Maher asked, “...if this isn’t China, shouldn’t you be able to say that?” Later Maher said, “But I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn’t be dying needlessly tomorrow.” Maher concluded with, “I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact.” Whether “That's a fact” is debatable. Were Maher’s statements harsh? Probably, but as harsh as they may have been, his defending an online reader’s comment rights, and his stating opinions about: 1. people not dying needlessly if Dick Cheney was not in power, and 2. more people would live if Cheney were dead, are not, “I wish Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack” as Ann is claiming. Everyone keeps throwing that "liberal" word out, but I'm not pro gun control, I'm not a crazy environmentalist, I believe strongly in the U.S. military because they do not choose the conflicts they become involved in, etc.

But our people have been put in harm's way for a long time by a bunch of guys who have no military backgrounds, and don't even start me on George W. Bush's military service, that does not qualify.

Believe me, I support the right things with these articles and I will always shoot from the hip, I realize that, but I feel like Coulter is an embarrassment to the nation and I'm sorry again that we even have to have this be the discussion.

I'm a high school teacher, living abroad, and there was a time when I was proud to speak for the United States. The only thing I can say now is to tell my non-American friends that the day will come when Bush and Co. will no longer speak for the country. Nor, hopefully, will Anne Coulter speak for herself or anyone else worth the trouble to listen to. In one day today, we had the Supreme Court turn back the clock on civil rights, the US Senate block immigration reform because it held out the promise on the Statue of Liberty to more of the world's downtrodden who believe in the US and it's promise, a report that the armed forces are so stretched that they are having to assign troops to duties for which they have not been trained, thus putting them in greater danger in a combat zone, and a story that the administration is stonewalling a subpoena so that we poor Americans can find out what our government is really doing. Sad, sad, sad. No wonder the Chinese, Hugo Chavez, and Putin are more trusted than is the United States of America. And by the way, I grew up in South Carolina, and there was a time when I was proud to be a Conservative too. That was looooong ago!

It seems obvious to me that the point Coulter is making is that Bill Maher's statement was hateful and outrageous. Her outrageous statement about Edwards was used to emphasize that point. She did not literally mean she wished Edwards was assassinated. In fact, in the context of the full quote, she is actually saying that her statement about Edwards is hateful and outrageous. Now, I am no Coulter fan. But on this topic, my analysis is correct. The interpretation that she wished Edwards were assassinated is categorically incorrect. That some people seem to misinterpret what she said probably relates to the fact that she has bashed Edwards at other times. But this was not one of those times.

Well, so far the most articulate, well-reasoned, level-headed, and cogent comment posted here so far has been that of Ann Coulter's! Love her or hate her, she's not dumb or inarticulate or any of the other choice adjectives used to describe her. She can be insufferable, and she does have rather annoying mannerisms, but I hardly think she's deserving of being doused in petrol and lit up like a roman candle, as so many here would seem to suggest. I'm not a particular fan of hers (I think she tends to engage in baiting over honest discourse), but I like to think I can disagree without being disagreeable, and ultimately unless we can all agree on THAT then there seems little reason to believe that any of us will honestly hear or be heard by those who stand apart from us. As Herbert Spencer wrote, "In proportion as we love truth more and victory less, we shall become anxious to know what it is which leads our opponents to think as they do." I don't see how we can move forward in any meaningful manner without such a mindset, and liberating one as well, I might add. The liberated mind, afterall, does not advocate; creed holds no sway. In the end, all are well-served to speak honestly, completely, and decently, even if in disagreement. As for Tim King... I think someone needs a hug.

I want the right to purchase only the cable network channels that I want. If we have freedom to chose then I definitely would cancel services from FOX, CNN and any other provide who are trying to make news and distort the American public or the world. Attack tirades from both sides will diminish when the ballot includes a no column and the highest net yes wins. No longer will A attacking B be able to assume the voter will vote for A if convinced B is a scoundrel. The result would be a more honest reflection of voter sentiment and the winner would know if they won with support or just by default because the other got more no votes. And the campaign would be much more positive since negative attacks wouldn't produce yes votes. Winning isn't everything if you can't do anything with it since you have little or no support. The last election shows that . Most agree the GOP lost more than the Dems won but the result doesn't show that, just the limited effectiveness of the slight majority in congress. A no column would let everyone know where real support is and where it isn't

Well Dave, you too need to reexamine your debate; Al Franken is not a vile comedian, he and I spent time together last winter in Afghanistan when he flew in for a USO show, in the war theater- and he had just arrived from Iraq. I agree in part with what you said, and i believe you are well intended, but you can not compare the reach and impact and potential liability of Coulter's words with Maher, and Franken is not even in the mix you refer to. The day before he arrived in Kabul a friend of mine who is extremely conservative, asked if, "I thought the soldiers were making snowballs with rocks in the middle to throw at that liberal?" I told my friend that I didn't see any of his Limbaugh/O'Reilly types there, in fact I don't think either of those two have covered a war, (somebody correct me if I am wrong.) But at least Al Franken has the guts to go support and visit soldiers in a war, it is not a simple or easy thing to do.

That night my friend ended up having to get Al Franken situated; fed dinner and assigned a place to sleep. He thought Al Franken was the nicest celebrity he had ever worked with, very genuine.

Is your own zeal justified sir? You are the one sticking up for somebody who speaks in ways that are unprecedented.

I agree with Tim's position and and general theme. However, isn't it odd that his piece uses the same tactics -- personal attacks and name-calling -- for which he criticizes Ann Coulter? And isn't it strange that so many comments -- from all sides to this controversy -- do the same? I like John Edwards, because I agree with his positions on the important issues of the day. I like his ideas, and what he says rings true in both my heart and my head. "A Coulter" has a posting here that defends her position with so-called "facts," which are basically a collection of anecdotes about Edwards, including an accusation that he uses the death of his son to advance his political ambition. When will it stop? When will our political discourse rise above this? That's the point of the controversy, the reason why Elizabeth and John Edwards challenged Ann Coulter in the first place. Honestly, what confuses me in all of this is how personally people take these things. The slightest slant in an article and the lines become drawn. I don't believe that was the authors' intent. It says much more about Tim's inability to process reality than Coulter's venomous jokes: "And networks give time to a media whore who taunts people over the death of their child, calls the widows of 9/11 firemen in New York "Greedy Witches", and states on national television that she hopes a leading politician will die in a terrorist attack." (1) Use the word "whore" to describe A.C. at any cost. If she were ugly, you'd come up with some sort of 'her figure evokes her ugly soul' commentary, but instead she must be a whore. But you can just drop "media" in front to avoid slander. (2) Evoke the sacred firemen since nothing bad dared be said about them or their kin. Don't believe for a second that political wackos use their dead family members for their own gain all the time, be it Cindy Sheehan, Edwards, the various widows of 9/11. It's a political tactic as well as a compelling reason to be outspoken. But it is both. There's nothing immoral about commenting on the action as political tactic. (3) Twist words, drop context, and totally miss the sarcasm and commentary, instead try and fool people who are uninformed that Coulter is out there campaigning for terrorists to kill Edwards. That's clearly bogus on the face of it, so for Tim to repeat that gross misinterpretation speaks of either nefarious intent or questionable comprehension skills. Be happy or be sad, but AC has had and will have a more successful stint in the public eye than Edwards. Tim could learn from her if he ever wants to make it out of Salem.

There is a difference, however: Ms. Coulter has thoughts about the big picture, has successfully parlayed conveying her thoughts into books, articles, and commentary, and has endured the derisive comments of those who don't agree with what she stands for -- the same people who never appear to be bothered with expressing what they're actually about, other than being against lots of things, including Ann Coulter. The Edwards campaign is apparently still running low on donations, so this week they went back to their top fundraiser: me.

I doubled the ratings of the lowest-rated cable news show on Tuesday by agreeing to go on for a full hour to promote my new paperback version of "Godless" -- a mistake I won't make again. As I was walking to the set, minutes before airtime, it was casually mentioned to me that Elizabeth Edwards, wife of Democratic presidential candidate, John Edwards, might call in.

For the first time in recorded history, the show's host did not interrupt a guest, but let Elizabeth Edwards ramble on and on, allowing her to browbeat me for being mean to her husband.

Say, did any TV host ever surprise Al Franken, Bill Maher or Arianna Huffington with a call by the wife of someone they've made nasty remarks about? How about a call to John Edwards from the wife of a doctor he bankrupted with his junk-science lawsuits?

I think I may have tuned out at some point, so I can only speak to the first 45 minutes of Elizabeth Edwards' harangue, but it mostly consisted of utterly dishonest renditions of things I had said on my "Good Morning America" interview this week and a column I wrote four years ago. (You can't rush Edwards' "rapid response team"!) She claimed I had launched unprovoked attacks on the Edwards' dead son and called for a terrorist attack on her husband.

These are bald-faced lies, and the mainstream media knows they are lies. Yet they were repeated ad nauseam on Wednesday by The Associated Press, the AOL pop-up window, CNN, NBC and -- stunningly -- the host of the lowest-rated cable show himself, who personally told me he knew the truth.

So for those of you who haven't read any of my five best-selling books: Liberals are driven by Satan and lie constantly.

Here is my full sentence on "Good Morning America," which the media deceptively truncated, referring to a joke I told about Edwards six months ago that made liberals cry: "But about the same time, you know, Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack -- so I've learned my lesson: If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he had been killed in a terrorist assassination plot."

The usual nut Web sites posted a zillion denunciations of my appearance on "Good Morning America" immediately after I appeared Monday morning. But it didn't occur to any of them to simply lie about what I had said. No, it took them nearly 36 hours to concoct a version of that quote that included the Edwards part, but not the Maher part, or what English language speakers call: "the point."

By tomorrow it will be: "Ann Coulter tried to kill John Edwards on 'Good Morning America'!"

Judging by his fundraising efforts so far, I gather most of you don't know who John Edwards is -- unless you're an overpriced hair dresser. He's the trial lawyer who pretended in court to channel the spirit of a handicapped fetus in front of illiterate jurors to scam tens of millions of dollars off of innocent doctors. According to The New York Times, Edwards told one jury: "She speaks to you through me ... And I have to tell you right now -- I didn't plan to talk about this -- right now I feel her. I feel her presence. She's inside me, and she's talking to you."

Let me also quote from campaign consultant Bob Shrum's book "No Excuses":

"(Kerry) was even queasier about Edwards after they met. Edwards had told Kerry he was going to share a story with him that he'd never told anyone else -- that after his son Wade had been killed, he climbed onto the slab at the funeral home, laid there and hugged his body, and promised that he'd do all he could to make life better for people, to live up to Wade's ideals of service. Kerry was stunned, not moved, because, as he told me later, Edwards had recounted the same exact story to him, almost in the exact same words, a year or two before -- and with the same preface, that he'd never shared the memory with anyone else. Kerry said he found it chilling, and he decided he couldn't pick Edwards unless he met with him again."

Apparently every time Edwards began a story about his dead son with "I've never told anyone this before," everyone on the campaign could lip-sync the story with him.

As a commentator, I bring facts like these to the attention of the American people in a lively way. Thus, for example, in a column about the Democratic candidates for president written in 2003, I pointed out that the Democrats refused to discuss the economy or the war, but had recently "discovered a surprise campaign issue: It turns out that several of them have had a death in the family."

Among several examples of Democrats talking about a death in the family on the campaign trail was this one:

John Edwards injects his son's fatal car accident into his campaign by demanding that everyone notice how he refuses to inject his son's fatal car accident into his campaign.

Edwards has talked about his son's death in a 1996 car accident on "Good Morning America," in dozens of profiles and in his new book. ("It was and is the most important fact of my life.") His 1998 Senate campaign ads featured film footage of Edwards at a learning lab he founded in honor of his son, titled "The Wade Edwards Learning Lab." He wears his son's Outward Bound pin on his suit lapel. He was going to wear it on his sleeve, until someone suggested that might be a little too "on the nose."

If you want points for not using your son's death politically, don't you have to take down all those "Ask me about my son's death in a horrific car accident" bumper stickers? Edwards is like a politician who keeps announcing that he will not use his opponent's criminal record for partisan political advantage.

Manifestly, I was not making fun of their son's death; I was making fun of John Edwards' incredibly creepy habit of invoking his son's tragic death to advance his political career -- a practice so repellant, it even made John Kerry queasy.

I'm a little tired of losers trying to raise campaign cash or TV ratings off of my coattails, particularly when they use their afflictions or bereavement schedules to try to silence the opposition. From now on, I'm attacking only serious presidential candidates, like Dennis Kucinich.

I raised my own children to have respect for all humans, regardless of who they are and what they believe. Free speech is one of the greatest things about America, but this crap from the far left and far right is just PURE HATE and has ZERO value to add to any of our lives; actually, I think it errodes the progress we have made in seeing all people as equals. There is a big difference in making a joke, and calling someone a tragedy whore that just lost her son. She made over the top comments regarding the widows of 9/11. There is no room for cruelty. We are all human and don't deserve a knife in our wounds. What credibility does she have for having a show on FOX "news" or having an hour guest spot on Hardball? I have never read such an irresponsible piece from a supposed professional journalist in my life. First, all of Coulter's comments were taken out of context. You only use a select few of her words to convict her -- none of the comments you refer to have the meaning you are seeking if you listen to the whole context. She absolutely did not say that she wishes Edwards would die in a terrorist attack (though your beloved Bill Mahrer did say just that about a sitting Vice President!). Do your homework, and especially do not commit the "crime" you accuse her of. You are far more misleading and inaccurate than Ann Coulter ever has been. AND, for a journalist -- one who should hold the First Amendment in high regard -- you certainly show no regard for her freedom of speech. The idiot fringes of the Left have been far more ascerbic and mean-spirited than Ms. Coulter for many, many years. They (and you) just have trouble when the Right have finally found a small forum from which to exercise their same rights. Tim, I couldn't agree with your editorial any more. Wonderful job! I also want to add that Elizabeth Edwards really moved me. She was able to stand up for someone she loves and for the hate directed at her deceased son with such grace and dignity. I have to admit that I would not have been able to control my emotions and reply with a clear, level head like she did. I would be proud to have her serve as first lady of this (soon to be again) wonderful country.

Good piece. But Charlie Dean was the brother of Gov. Howard Dean, who was killed in Vietnam and whom Gov. Dean has referenced throughout his political career. The Edwards' son Wade was killed in a car crash in 1996. Coulter has made remarks about both politicians' family loss, which is what Elizabeth Edwards was referring to.
