(SALEM, Ore. ) - Firefighters from Marion County Fire District No.1 along with crews from the Salem Fire Department and Aumsville Fire Department worked quickly to extinguish a wildfire Sunday afternoon in Salem.

Marion County Fire District officials tell Salem-News.com that the fire began when the owner of a tree farm, located near Kuenzi Road and 117th Ave, just off State Street, was removing a tree stump and sparks got away from him and ignited nearby grass and brush which spread quickly and he called 911.

The fire began around 3:00 p.m. and was under control around 5:45 p.m. About 70 firefighters fought the blaze, and cleaned up hot-spots.

Fire officials say one structure was threatened by the fire, and this was a legal burn that got out of control by accident.

Additional crews from Stayton, Sublimity, Turner, Jefferson, Silverton, Mt. Angel, and Woodburn helped clean-up hot-spots.

No injuries were reported, and about six acres were burned in the fire.

Marion County fire crews remind all residents that with the forecast calling for a hot, dry summer, to be on alert when using tools, or starting outdoor fires before they grow out of control. One of the most basic tools to fight this is to have water available near any outdoor fire or work in case of a fire or sparks getting away and accidentally start a fire.
