(JUNEAU, AL) - From high up in the sky a bald eagle glides down, over a frozen glacier, and swoops across the coastal waters. A whale surfaces, so close that the participants who have gathered from around the world feel as though they could reach out and touch its smooth, rubbery skin. This, Alaska’s Inner Passage, the land of endless summer light, is the location that traditional Shaman and Healer, Brant Secunda chooses to introduce retreat attendees to the ancient teachings that he has dedicated his life to.

Originally from New Jersey, Brant Secunda spent twelve years in the Sierra Madre mountains as an apprentice to the renowned Huichol shaman, Don José Matsuwa, who, after 110 years, left Brant in his place as a lineage holder for the tribe. For the past four decades Brant and the Dance of the Deer Foundation have worked tirelessly to keep the Huichol traditions alive through various conferences, seminars and educational retreats at places of power across the globe.

According to Secunda, “Shamanism is very relevant in the modern world. Today we can still use drums, rattles and ancient practices of transformation as a way to improve our health and well being. Shamanic practice enable us to bring joy and happiness into our lives. We have to change in order for the world to change.”

The trip to Alaska is particularly special, as attendees are able to learn traditional practices to find inspiration and guidance in dreams, ancient chants to bring about inner balance, teachings of Huichol cosmology, and ways to approach sacred places amidst some of the most majestic scenery in the world.
