Poll Finds Salem Voters Support Third Bridge

While some portion of the project likely will be paid for using federal and state funds, the current funding climate indicates that local funding must be a significant portion of the total funding.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with polling firm Action Solutions, have found that 65 percent of Salem voters approve of an additional vehicle bridge across the Willamette River in Salem.

The scientific poll was conducted on March 11 of this year and included participation from a sample size of 474 registered voters throughout Salem.

“These scientifically significant polling results continue to prove that our elected leaders and governmental staff are focused on priorities important to the majority of Salem’s voters,” said Jason Brandt, Chief Executive Officer for the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.

When voters were asked if they support or oppose the construction of a third bridge across the Willamette River, 64.74 percent of respondents were in favor compared to 25.21 percent of voters in opposition. 10.04 percent of respondents had no opinion at this time.

Over the course of the past several years, the Salem Chamber has been a strong proponent for the importance of a third vehicle bridge for the efficient movement of goods and services throughout the Mid-Willamette Valley.

In addition, the organization has advocated for the enhanced transportation infrastructure in an effort to improve quality of life and property values in both Marion and Polk County.

“Our region is clearly ready to move forward with this project,” said Brandt. “We owe it to our children and grandchildren to continue this important work. It will result in more middle class jobs and a stronger economy which benefits all residents throughout the region.”

The Salem River Crossing project is working toward finding a solution that will reduce traffic congestion for all users (buses, cars, trucks, bikes) on the two bridges that cross the Willamette River and the connecting roads in downtown and West Salem.
