(KEIZER, Ore. ) - Keizer Fire Chief, Jeff Cowan, was recognized by the Keizer Fire Board of Directors and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians for his achievement of 30 years as a Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic. This distinction is an honor held by few EMTs. To maintain his status as a Nationally Registered Paramedic, Chief Cowan completed, on a biennial basis, the most comprehensive recertification program for Emergency Care Paramedics in America. He not only completed courses to refresh his fundamental knowledge and skills but also attended monthly training and additional continuing education courses to advance his knowledge on new life saving skills. Paramedics provide the highest level of Advanced Life Support and clinical care available to emergency patients in the field. By maintaining his Nationally Registered status and completing regular continuing education courses, Cowan is among the few elite Paramedics with the most training in pre-hospital emergency care in the nation. Chief Cowan began his career as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in 1981, in Oregon City, with Willamette Falls Ambulance. He progressed through the EMT certification ranks eventually achieving his Oregon Paramedic Certification in 1983 and his National Registry Paramedic Certification in 1984. Chief Cowan is the Fire Chief of Keizer Fire District and is an Oregon Licensed Paramedic as well. The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians serves at the national Emergency Medical Services (EMS) certification organization by providing a valid, uniform process to assess the knowledge and skills required for competent practice by EMS professionals throughout their careers and by maintaining a registry of certification status. Chief Cowan was awarded a certification of recognition by the National Registry and which was presented to him at the Keizer Fire District Board Meeting. Chief Cowan thanked the Board of Directors for their support of him maintaining his Paramedic License, which in turn resulted in this achievement. Source: Keizer Fire Department
