Dr. Kevorkian: the Benefactor for those Dying from Pain

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - The New York Times offered an OP-ED article Dr. Kevorkian Victims, 6 June 2011, which was to me the Arrogance or Ignorance by someone who should have known better.

Almost every compassionate doctor has been involved in assisted suicide, if not personally then through a physician friend whom he knew would help.

When this first came into the news, The Department of Medical Ethics of The Oregon Medical School sent a questionnaire to all licensed doctors in Oregon. About 170 doctors admitted they had aided in suicide. The actual figure is certainly higher because the Oregon Medical Board is very prissy about such!

The NY Times does point out that many millions considered Dr. Jack Kevorkian to be a hero. I do also. I have been in such severe pain from chemical induced meningitis that relief through death would have been a BLESSING. They told my mother 3 times that I would not survive. My doctors never thought I would be normal again and certainly not to be mentally able to write these articles.

There is NOTHING noble or moral about severe pain and suffering. Severely wounded soldiers on the battlefield far from medical help will beg to be shot for relief. For cancer, and HIV patients et cetera, almost the same thing occurs.

The author, Ross Douthat, has no idea what extreme severe pain can do to a person. Oregonians in terminal severe pain ARE taking advantage of our law and it is surprising more states haven’t joined in.

Most people die peacefully in their sleep or just fade away but Hospices are gaining favor and they WILL treat pain even if accidental lethal overdoses are frequent.

Widowers will frequently suicide with a gun, exhaust gas or even rat poison or jumping off a bridge. Medicine is much more preferable.

It is certain that doctor assisted suicides are becoming more common but the doctors are being more careful except for the Oxycontin doctors and there is now an epidemic of accidental overdose suicides.

The TIMES prints of a clinic in Switzerland for assisted suicides that is booked up solid and for $6000. For author Douthat to call this murder is grotesque. It is far better than a gunshot or rat poison.
