Lieberman's Demands for War in Iran are Cowardly

Lieberman wants to send our beleaguered military forces into yet another conflict.

(SALEM, Ore.) - February 24th, 1942 is the day the Voice of America began broadcasting. The drive for freedom and unified victory was a national consensus during the Second World War, people were all on the same team.

Something else that came to be on February 24th 1942 that today is certainly a voice in America, perhaps a national phenomenon... Joe Lieberman.

It seems this Independent Senator from Connecticut is often confused about his mission, but his role as the first leading US politician to call out publicly for Americans to bomb Iran over its alleged actions in Iraq is the work of a man whose jaded politics and desires leave little to talk about.

He is a danger to our country. If his rantings were to come to fruition and he edges his nation into yet another conflict, he will not be the one to do this dirty work, it will be your sons and mine.

Lieberman says if Iran won't play by the rules, "we've got to use our force. And to me that would include taking military action to stop them from doing what they're doing."

"This could be achieved mostly with air attacks." Lieberman said.

Some say his views reflect the growing anger and frustration in the administration and military, but everyone knows that the problems surrounding the war in Iraq have continued to spiral out of control for years.

But an unflinching desire on behalf of President Bush to "push on" in a war in Iraq that was poorly executed and has now brought that nation to civil war, only drives others to react, eventually. The biggest problem is that Iran denies what it is being accused of; training Iraqi militants and selling them arms.

"By some estimates, (Iranian-trained Iraqis) have killed as many as 200 American soldiers," Lieberman said.

It seems like once again the false intelligence and rumor mill are churning out little senators that are just full of information.

In the end, it will not benefit anyone if the U.S. aggressively strikes out at Iran. As it is, American soldiers are being corralled behind barbed wire fences when they return from war because the command at Fort Carson, Colorado for example, has concluded that they can not be trusted after combat duty.

But Joe Lieberman wants to send these beleaguered military forces, our American brothers and sisters, into yet another conflict and it is time for people to start figuring out ways to send chickenhawk politicians like Lieberman running from Washington D.C. with their tails between their legs.

This Vietnam War protester is regarded as one of the Senate's leading opponents of violence in video games and on television. So it's OK with Joe Lieberman if we fire up the F-15's and bomb another nation, but don't let the kid see or do anything violent on TV.

It is a ridiculous notion, just like Lieberman's politics. Yes, like anybody else he has done good things, but he is the guy protected by the crowd who keeps lobbing stones to see what kind of a reaction we are going to get. It is a bad time for Joe Lieberman.

Iran denies arming and training Iraqi Shia militia. Mr Lieberman said he had just returned from a tour of the Middle East, including Israel. He accused Iran of backing extremists in Iraq and Lebanon and supporting Hamas attacks against Israel and Palestinian US allies.

But I can tell you from spending time in the Afghanistan War theater that officials like Lieberman never venture into the areas where they would learn anything real. It is all limousines and schedules and security everywhere. Don't believe him when he takes a quick jaunt to the middle east and comes back demanding war.

It reminds me of an elementary school scene where the two guys are circling, fists are raised, but they are still communicating with words, maybe they are friends who had a falling out, maybe they wish a crowd hadn't gathered over their escalating disagreement.

Then here comes an even worse problem than the one at hand; it is the kid that runs up and is the first to yell, "Hit 'em". I've never seen those words not start a fight. If you happen to have grown up in in Stanford, Connecticut, then the name of that kid was probably Joe Lieberman. He's a politician who never learned very much along the way.

58,000 Americans were killed in the Vietnam War,many with the help of China. Liberman, our male Jane Fonda, was a coward and had no desire to fight.

Al deFilippo April 18, 2008 1:21 pm (Pacific time)

Joe comes from a family of cowards. Father did not fight in WW2 Joe had 2 deferments and ran for state office on an anti vietnam war stand. If he is so much for this war ,send his son.

Actually Alex, "anti semitism" is a misnomer. The majority of jews are eastern european in origin, not semitic. Whereas arabs are purely semitic. Thus, for example, the state of Israel is anti-semitic. Moreover, anti-semitism throughout most of history is a response to genocidally racist Jewish anti-gentilism. Try reading the Tanakh or the Talmud, without practicing "condonation" or lying about what's in them. Moreover, fortunately many brave people are rejecting the notion that any criticism of Israel or Zionism is "anti-semitic," despite groups like the ADL and JDL's orwellian war on free speech. So spout off your propaganda somewhere else.

Tom June 18, 2007 6:32 pm (Pacific time)

It is sickening that someone like Liberman opens up his mouth and speaks like an Israilie jew who hates muslims, regardless of any reasons. It seems that Jwish nation of Isreal wants to get even with the german otrosities by destroying Muslims from any where in any continenet. What a shame!!

Keith June 13, 2007 12:53 pm (Pacific time)

Latest lie, this time from Condi's State Dept, is that Iran is arming/aiding the Taliban in Afghanistan. But the Pentagon says not true---and the Taliban is the enemy of the Shia in Iran. Also refutes the lie that Shia Iran is arming the Sunni insurgents in Iraq. But our White House is arming the Iraqi Sunni insurgents under the reasoning they will fight al Qaeda in Iraq. When al Qaeda in Iraq are defeated, they can use same weapons against the foreign occupiers (US).

Alex June 13, 2007 10:22 am (Pacific time)

Outside of all the other misstatements made by reefus88, (the Balfour Declaration, Persians etc,.) that other people have documented, I’ll add the word ANTI-SEMITISM to the growing list of things he doesn’t have a clue on understanding. Do you know what the word means? It means hating Jews for being Jews. It is at the same level as hating Arabs for being Arab or hating Muslims because they are Muslim. Do you do that reefus88? Criticizing Israel is not being Anti-Semitic. People like you throw that word “Anti-Semitic” when you want to kill debate. You want to slur the people to make other’s believe that they are full of ‘hate’ towards another group of people when they criticize Israeli government policy. Go lookup the definition of Anti-Semitism and report back to the board. Here’s what reefus88 wrote: "When, oh when, will the United States stop putting Israel's interests above its own? I think the Senator's comments border on treason." Their interests are our own, THEY ARE OUR ALLY. Just like England, Australia and numerous other countries. I honestly wonder how different people opinions would be if instead of jews it was a bunch of aussies or englishmen that the leader of Iran said he wanted to blow of the map. I had no clue anti semitism was so alive and kicking in this world. And I think yo need to look up the definition of treason.......

hiding in plain view June 13, 2007 9:11 am (Pacific time)

My opinion based on my observations says: To understand the political /social stucture of jews one must realise that their kind follows the edicts of their rabbi to the letter; who in turn, follows a rabbi elder and so on. Lieberman is not different. Take the example of any influential jew in your town and trace him to his rabbi and you will find a network whose ultimate loyalty resides with Israel first and foremost. This is not true of a christian or moslem or buddist. It is ALWAYS the case for jews. Does this answer the one who asked for proof of joe blows disloyalty? Also, the HINDUs also follow a similar social/political structure (expect their allegiance is to India).

well at least some of the people on this site got their eyes and ears on. This Iran thing is the same old bs that the excuse was to do Iraq and is all about the almighty dollar and oil money. Iran is selling their oil in Euros and the big oil mafia in Texans and the olive branch banksters do not like it! It is ironic that a week prior to Bush going to Europe to poke sticks at the Russian Bear that Dick Cheney took a low profile trip to Kazakhstan to convince their prez to not pipe their oil and natural gas into the nearby Russian border for sales and refinement but to pipeline it on into Turkey so Chevron could latch hold of it to sale and try to take some of the Euro market away from Russia to try and screw up their economy again after it is finally getting on its feet. Make no mistake about it it is all about making a buck under the table cause why should big American oil companies buy oil when they can buy politicians cheaper and send the American families sons and daughters off to war to die for oil and all at the American taxpayers expense at that! Wise up stupids!

No no no! June 12, 2007 12:03 pm (Pacific time)

I don't think people like Joe give a damn to women or minority rights, US soldier's lives, US national interest or civilian casulties, unless they are the Israelis. All they care about what is good for Israel, or the Jews. All this orchestrated accusations that Iran supports Iraqi insurrergents, the Talibans are smoke and mirror to instigate a war against Iran on behalf of Israel.

Tom Nelson June 12, 2007 11:15 am (Pacific time)

Richard, like you I spent time in Iran. In my case I spent almost 4 years in eastern Iran as a Peace Corps Volunteer; I speak Farsi fluently. I never heard Iranians described as "Farsis" before in any context. Also, when I traveled to Iran after the Islamic Revolution I was surprised at how many educated women are actually working in public (the first Iranian I encountered at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran was a woman customs official who brooked no guff from arriving Iranian men passengers). Likewise, in my visits to former friends in the boondocks of eastern Iran I found that the barrier separating men from women had actually broken down after the Revolution; unlike the 1960s, now men and women had active discussions and relationships (indeed, one of the most effective people I met during my visit was an Iranian woman attorney in Meshed who was litigating in favor of an Iranian woman on a domestic dispute; she ultimately won). I don't think that your comments are accurate, but you certainly are entitled to your opinion.

Keith June 12, 2007 11:11 am (Pacific time)

Some experts say Israel has more nuclear weapons than France---only US, Russia, and Britain have more. Many of these weapons can be put on Israeli subs parked on the coast of Iran and destroy the country in minutes. Recent history has taught that countries who DO NOT have nuclear weapons get attacked/invaded by the US. If you DO have them (North Korea, Pakistan, China, Russia) then you are safe. Iraq and Iran had nothing to do with 9/11. Bin Laden is in Pakistan. Reagan/Bush sold massive amounts of weapons (including 2,000 missiles) to Iran. Reagan/Bush supported Saddam Hussein and the radical Islamists in Afghanistan. The CIA put Saddam in power in the 60's. Iran has third largest oil reserves--behind Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

Tom Nelson June 12, 2007 11:08 am (Pacific time)

Earlier in this chain there is an allegation that Senator Lieberman holds dual Israeli/American citizenship. I cannot find verification of that fact. Is this true? What support is there for this allegation?

Me June 12, 2007 9:32 am (Pacific time)

For those warmongers who chose to talk about Women rights and minority rights in Iran to justify an attack on Iran: 1- Women do have access to education in Iran. In fact more than 50% of college students are women. 2- Armenians are fully protected. They have their own churches and their own rep in the parlimant. They have had historically very good relationship with the rest of the Iranian population and consider themselves Iranian before anything else. 3- Before you speak of "incompetence" of Iranian, perhaps you should consider the problems in the US, where 40M are without insurance, poverty runs rampant in the inner cities, while a few make billions off of a bloody war that leaves the poorest Americans dead and wounded (not to mention what it is doing to Iraqis). It is true that all countries have problems and could improve. But it is best left to the people of that country to decide how they want to improve and reform. Certainly being DEAD is no improvement. Please stop the war-mongering. The idiots who call for more wars (yes including the moron Joe Lieberman), should first sign up for the military before calling for any more bloddy wars. I hope the good people of Connecticut have the sense of taking whatever legal action they can to dump Joe in the trash bin of history where he truely belongs.

Jim June 12, 2007 9:27 am (Pacific time)

So, Iran killing or helping kill American soldiers is acceptable? I know what we can do. We can tell Iran that if we find out they are involved in killing any more of our soldiers we will send a strongly worded statement! If they continue after that we will utter Condemnations! From what I see Iran started it so the whole idea that this would be illegal is wrong. A country has a right to defend itself. “The United States pledges that it is and from now on will be the policy of the United States not to intervene, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in Iran’s internal affairs.” THIS IS NOT AN INTERNAL AFFAIR. Iranian's should not be carrying out attacks on american troops in Iraq or training or supplying others to do the same. I suppose most of those leaving comments thought we should have not done anything after 9/11. Peace at any price is slavery.

Ari June 12, 2007 9:02 am (Pacific time)

Lieberman a coward? Maybe you should look at the other 99 Senators before you use the word so freely. Some of those cowards are even running for President and they have nary a clue, just like Bush, on how to be a Commander in Chief. So old Joe made a statement that may not be to appropriate, but atleast he had something to say that may make some sense in the near future, unlike a few other Presidential wannabe's.

Mr. Liberman wants us to do the dirty work for Israel. NO MORE NO LESS. REMEMBER WHAT WE DID TO IRAN BEFORE THE SHA!!!!

Richard June 11, 2007 6:45 pm (Pacific time)

Farsi is a language, but was also used as a reference to the Farsi speaking people of Iran when I was there. the other major groups were the Turks and the Armenians. Ari, I thought the Turks and particularly the Armenians were generally well educated people. I thought most of the Farsi speaking people were abysmally incompetent. It is truly sad that the many fine Christian Armenians I knew in Iran, who led relatively good lives under the Shah are now under the tyranny of islamic fundamentalists, who have denied them their ability to live or dress as they want, have denied their intelligent daughters any chance at an education or even the ability to work for a living.

truth June 11, 2007 6:32 pm (Pacific time)

"why do some idiot preachers support israel. Anyone care to explain?" As far as I can discern, it goes back to what I was taught in the First (southern) Baptist church. In 3 of the four gospels, Jesus is said to have said When the fig tree buds,"know that it is nigh, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done” Mark (13:28-30).

Certain, but I pray not most evangelicals believe that the "fig tree" is Israel and that it's emergence as a nation signals the end of time (the last generation)...and they are thrilled! They want to help this self-fulfilling prophecy along. Millions will die and go to hell. How wonderful to them! Betraying mankind to fulfill God's plan is what it amounts to. They condemn Juddas Iscariot for doing the exact same. They scare me.

bone June 11, 2007 6:17 pm (Pacific time)

Ok, this is a proxy war. We have been in this situation before and not been foolish enough to allow it to ignite a wider regional or global conflict. China helped North Korea more than Iran is helping the insurgents in the 50's. Did we attack China? The Soviets backed our enemy in Vietnam. Did we attack them? We killed untold soviets in Afghanistan by training and arming the Afghanis. DID THEY BOMB US??! Let me make it plain. Crazy uncle Joe is WRONG when he claims Iran isn't "playing by the rules." They are doing exactly what other nations have gotten away with doing to us in the past and we have in turn done to other nations ourselves. Discarding the wisdom of the last half-century (wisdom that allowed us to prevail in the cold war without a nuclear holocaust) is DANGEROUS!

Concern-American June 11, 2007 5:51 pm (Pacific time)

Back in March, the Bush Administration released its new “National Security Strategy of the United States,” and regime change in Iran leaps out of it as a goal. “We may face no greater challenge from a single country than from Iran,” the document baldly states in a grand exaggeration. And for all the recent talk about Iran’s nuclear threat, the document does not confine its discussion of Iran to the nuclear issue. “The United States has broader concerns,” it says. “The Iranian regime sponsors terrorism, threatens Israel, seeks to thwart Middle East peace, disrupts democracy in Iraq, and denies the aspirations of its people for freedom.”

All of these issues, along with the nuclear one, “can ultimately be resolved only if the Iranian regime makes the strategic decision to change these policies, open up its political system, and afford freedom to its people,” the document states. “This is the ultimate goal of U.S. policy.” President Bush and Condoleezza Rice may stress in public that they are giving diplomacy a try, but this document makes clear that they have something else in mind.

If the Bush Administration attacks Iran, it would be violating the U.N. Charter. And it would also be violating the Algiers Accord that the United States signed with Iran in 1981 to end the hostage crisis. Point I, paragraph 1, of that accord states, “The United States pledges that it is and from now on will be the policy of the United States not to intervene, directly or indirectly, politically or militarily, in Iran’s internal affairs.”

Not only is the goal of regime change illegal, it is also unachievable.

“Democracy cannot be imported, nor can it be given to a people by invading their nation, nor by bombing them with cluster bombs. It must be indigenous,” says Shirin Ebadi, the Iranian human rights advocate who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003.

The Administration has refused to rule out the possibility of military strikes, and even the use of nuclear weapons, on Iran’s nuclear facilities and beyond, as if the Iraq quagmire has not taught it anything. And Iran is not Iraq. Iraq was formed only in 1932 with artificial boundaries that have no historical roots. Iran, on the other hand, has existed for thousands of years as an independent nation. Hence, Iranian nationalism is extremely fierce. Military strikes on Iran would create a potent mixture that combines fierce Iranian nationalism with the Shiites’ long tradition of martyrdom in defense of their homeland and religion. The attacks would engulf the entire region in flames.

“Iranians will not allow a single U.S. soldier to set foot in Iran,” declares Ebadi, and this is a woman who has been imprisoned by Iran’s hardliners and is constantly harassed for her work on behalf of political prisoners.

Armchair warriors, such as William Kristol, have been claiming that intense bombing of Iran will lead to an uprising by Iranians. The absurd argument is that, “We will destroy Iran, but Iranians will love us for bombing them, and hate the hardliners.” Although a large majority of Iranians despise the hardliners, anyone who has the slightest familiarity with Iran’s history knows that intense bombing of Iran will not lead to their downfall. Rather, it will help them consolidate power.

The exact thing happened right after the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Almost a year and half later western countries used Iraqis as proxy and attacked the new formed democratically elected government. At the time hardliners used the imposed war to silence any resistance. The continuation of Iran-Iraq war (8 years) helped the current hardliners to unify most of the population behind them and harshly destroy any internal and external opposition in lieu of “National Interest”. If we really have our interest in mind and have learn anything from the history we should only engage the Iranians in talks and try to bring them on our side. We are currently talking to Iraqi insurgencies and providing them with money and weapons in return for they stop supporting Al-Qade. Per Sen. Lieberman the Iranian allegedly helped killing around 200 American soldiers. Is that a good excuse for going into war a nation? Who killed the rest of the 3500 American soldiers?

Ari June 11, 2007 3:06 pm (Pacific time)

Richard, if it is true that "the Farsi (Iranians) are incompetent in running a democracy", then why did the US have to oust their democratically elected Prime Minister in the 50s by means of covert operations and sabotage, and instead bring to power a despot tyrant self-declared King (Shah)? The fact is that Persians/Iranians (Farsi is the language, you imbecile) are a world apart sociologically and ethnically from their Arab neighbours, and the last time tried democracy, your "freedom fighting" mates in the CIA overthrew their attempt at democracy. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. And, I hardly believe you worked in either of those countries. Your statement merely serves to add credibility to your ludicrous comments. You liar.

Whats with this new fad the kids keep saying these days? "The mess this country is in." Mess? What messs? My street is still clean, I feel safe goin to the supermarket, I can get a job if I want one, most of the products I consume would be considered of the highest luxury in less fortunate corners of the earth. What exactly do all these people mean by "mess"?

Michael June 11, 2007 2:50 pm (Pacific time)

He isn't stupid. He simply does not represent the interests of the country where he is a senator. I can't also agree he is acting in the interest of Israel, not at least in interests of majority of people there, though that's what he may think about his position. I think he is just a backup neo-con. One kept on the Dems side just in case other neo-cons lose their influence thru Republicans. But the scary thing, while his preferences are so obvious he was still recently elected a senator.

Richard June 11, 2007 2:45 pm (Pacific time)

Having worked in Iran under the Shah and in Iraq, I believe mistakes were made in removing the only effective form of government for these people, i.e. a despot. Carter should have left the Shah in power and Bush should have left Sadam in power. Both the Iraqis and the Farsi (Iranians) are incompetent in running a democracy. The only form of government that works for them is an absolute tyrant. We should divide Iraq into three countries and leave a non-Muslim fundamentalist in absolute charge of each one. We should cause a regime change in Iran and restore the monarchy.

Human will is not always logical but rather usually based on emotions. Lieberman should learn to practice patience and speak when spoken to - even then - only if it is beneficial to his constituency, his nation.

I asked a jew I grew up with what he thought of Jesus. He said "as far as jews are concerned, Jesus is not a jew and what he thaught us does not apply." So if jews believe they are the chosen people and the followers of Jesus came afterwards and are not, why do some idiot preachers support israel. Anyone care to explain?

knoxious June 11, 2007 1:26 pm (Pacific time)

The Balfour Declaration - In November 1917, before Britain had conquered Jerusalem and the area to be known as Palestine, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration. The declaration was a letter addressed to Lord Rothschild, based on a request of the Zionist organization in Great Britain. The declaration stated Britain's support for the creation of a Jewish national home in Palestine, without violating the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities. The declaration was the result of lobbying by the small British Zionist movement, especially by Dr. Haim Weizmann, who had emigrated from Russia to Britain, but it was motivated by British strategic considerations. Paradoxically, perhaps, a major motivation for the declaration may have been the belief, inspired by anti-Semitism, that international Jewry would come to the aid of the British if they declared themselves in favor of a Jewish homeland, and the fear that the Germans were about to issue such a declaration.

After the war, the League of Nations divided much of the Ottoman Empire into mandated territories. The British and French saw the Mandates as instruments of imperial ambitions. US President Wilson insisted that the mandates must foster eventual independence. The British were anxious to keep Palestine away from the French, and decided to ask for a mandate that would implement the Jewish national home of the Balfour declaration, a project that would be supported by the Americans. The Arabs opposed the idea of a Jewish national home, considering that the areas now called Palestine were their land. The Arabs felt they were in danger of dispossession by the Zionists, and did not relish living under Jewish rule.

Arab Riots and Jewish immigration - In the spring of 1920, spring of 1921 and summer of 1929, Arab nationalists opposed to the Balfour declaration, the mandate and the Jewish National Home, instigated riots and pogroms against Jews in Jerusalem, Hebron, Jaffa and Haifa. The violence led to the formation of the Haganah Jewish self-defense organization in 1920. The riots of 1920 and 1921 reflected opposition to the Balfour declaration and fears that the Arabs of Palestine would be dispossessed, and were probably attempts to show the British that Palestine as a Jewish National home would be ungovernable. The major instigators were Hajj Amin El Husseini, later Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, and Arif -El Arif, a prominent Palestinian journalist. The riots of 1929 occurred against the background of Jewish-Arab nationalist antagonism. The Arabs claimed that Jewish immigration and land purchases were displacing and dispossessing the Arabs of Palestine. However, economic, population and other indicators suggest that objectively, the Arabs of Palestine benefited from the Mandate and Zionist investment. The War of Independence - 1948 War (the 'Nakba') - The War of Independence or 1948 War is divided into the pre-independence period, and the post-independence period. Clashes between Israeli underground groups and Arab irregulars began almost as soon as the UN passed the partition resolution. During this time, Arab countries did not invade, though the Jordan legion did assist the in the attack against Gush Etzion, a small block of settlements in the territory allocated to the Palestinian state, south of Jerusalem.

On May 14, 1948, the Jews proclaimed the independent State of Israel, and the British withdrew from Palestine. In the following days and weeks, neighboring Arab nations invaded Palestine and Israel (click here for map). The fighting was conducted in several brief periods, punctuated by cease fire agreements ( truces were declared June 11 to July 8, 1948 and July 19- October 15, 1948).

The 1967 6-Day War - Tension began developing between Israel and Arab countries in the 1960s. Israel began to implement its National Water Carrier plan, which pumps water from the Sea of Galilee to irrigate south and central Israel. The project was in accordance with a plan proposed by US envoy Eric Johnston in 1955, and agreed to by Arab engineers. Arab governments refused to participate however, because of the implied recognition of Israel. In secret meetings, Israel and Jordan agreed to abide by the water quotas set by the plan.

The newly formed Palestinian Fatah movement seized on the Israeli diversion as an "imperialist event" that would catalyze their revolution, and Yasser Arafat began calling for war to eliminate Israel. In the Fatah newspaper, Filistinunah, ("our Palestine") Arafat ridiculed Egyptian President Nasser and other Arab leaders for their impotence, and called for effective action against Israel. Nasser decided to found the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as a "tame" alternative to the Fatah, and placed Ahmed Shukhairy, an ineffective and bombastic diplomat at its head.

"Knoxious, your post is reprinted below for convenience. I'm glad you asked about Israeli criminal activities." Yeah, you saw all that first hand, I just saw a purple pig fly across the sky too.....Sort of like the rockets flying into Israel, you know, the ones fired by palestinians. I also saw the same purple pig fly across a sbarros when I was getting some pizza, you know, sbarros like the ones palestinians blow up when they're filled with jews. That damn purple pig came back when my cousin was getting married, you know, like the weddings palestianians blow up when they're filled with jews. How many land for peace offeres have there been? How much land for peace has israel given only to be attacked in less then 24 hours? How often do these noble palestinians hide behind "innocent civillians" while firing rockets at "innocent civillians"? Why were there military bunckers built under hospitals and schools in lebanon? MAYBE for a PR smear campaign against israel when they blow them up? Is israel innoecnt in all this-HECK NO, but don't sit there and try to make it out that they're the only ones doing wrong over there. I'll finish with this one simple question-How much land have the palestinians offered for peace?

Joe Sixpack June 11, 2007 1:01 pm (Pacific time)

If Lieberman wants to bomb Iran, let him. I mean, give him a helicopter and a bomb and send him off to do it. Of course, if we did he would then suddenly change his tune. As for Israel, I used to believe Israel had a right to exist, after repeated assassinations, military incursions, human rights violations (cluster bombs for one), seizing land they have no rights to, the list goes on ... I think one who abuses a right loses that right. I'd be lynched if I ever said that in public. But nothing can be done about Israel, not even by the U.N., because the U.S. uses its veto power every single time an objective resolution is sought, forcing only a watered down pro-Israeli one to take its place.

westerners have been messing around the middle east a long time, and they have had enough, Briton has been screwing with them for over a century, google "Mosadeqi" or the term "blowback" the only business westerners have in the middle east is buying oil (whilst developing alternative energy sources)

dan w June 11, 2007 12:55 pm (Pacific time)

Lieberman is and has been the chief Israeli cheerleader in American politics. It bothers him not a bit that he regards Israel as he does America. Although it does bother me that he gets away with the duplicity. However I have long considered Lieberman to be a spokesman for Israel first, with America's interests as an afterthought.

Alastair Dallas June 11, 2007 12:53 pm (Pacific time)

What a sad article and so many, many, sad responses. It would be nice if the world were not a kill-or-be-killed battle for supremacy, but wishing doesn't make it so. A US Senator says that Iran--not some shadowy terrorist organization, but a member of the U.N.--has killed 200 U.S. soldiers. Killing just one entitles them to expect one of our many bombs. The history of humanity has been a steady stream of conquerors and vanquished, and the mightiest nation on the planet at this time lets 200 of its soldiers be killed with no retribution? We are defeating ourselves in real time. It's terribly, terribly sad.

emmanuel June 11, 2007 12:53 pm (Pacific time)

makebelieve politicians like liberman are the reasons why this country is in such a mess, some one should remind him that as a senator today he has become a classic case of an irrelivant politician

Reefus88, in your rant posted on "June 11, 2007 8:35 am (Pacific time)," you state that Palestine/Israel was controlled by the "PERSIAN EMPIRE," that "jews killed persians and persians jews," and that "persians became palestinans..." You offer this misinformation in order to tell other readers of this post to educate themselves about the region. SIR, YOU ARE GROSSLY MISINFORMED YOURSELF -- YOU ARE THE ONE WHO NEEDS TO BE EDUCATED ABOUT THE REGION. Palestine was under the control of the Ottoman Turks and later under the "mandate" of the British Empire. The Persians have had nothing to do with Jews since 2000 years ago when the Persian King gave asylum to the Jews who were at the time being persecuted by Romans, Greeks, and Assyrians; the Persian King later liberated their land and permitted them to return home. As for the pathetic notion that Persians became Palestinians -- no such thing occurred. You will have one heck of a time proving this. Persians are ethnically Aryan, the precursors to what is considered White today. Jews on the other hand have a great deal in common with Arabs -- in fact, they are both Semites (of Afro-Semitic origin). As for you insistence that readers find out about the "Balfour Agreement," I agree that they should. Then they will understand how silly it is that Minister Balfour's LETTER to the Zionist Organization was abused and made to look like a Legal Treaty -- which it is not. The Balfour Agreement did not emanate from the head of a State, it was merely a letter of support.

Elias June 11, 2007 12:49 pm (Pacific time)

The amount of ignorance I've read in these comments is astounding. People need to wake up and stop comparing the sitaution in Iran to Nazi Germany. Apples and Oranges. Lieberman is a Jew Puppet looking out for Israel's best interests. Grow up and get your heads out of the sand people.

Wannabe June 11, 2007 12:48 pm (Pacific time)

Mr. Lieberman shame, you should be ashamed of yourself trying to feed the American people bunch of garbage. According to your statement 200 of Americans may have been killed by Iranian trained insurgent, then who killed the other 3300 of our brave men and women who are being place there to serve the state of Israel interest. Remember Mr. Lieberman I am paying $3.50 per Gallon for gas. Gas is not it. Iraq is Gone, ,and now you are companying to destroy Iran. Not cause you love Americans, cause you and state of Israel think that Iran possess a danger to the state of Isreal. Mr Lieberman, it is all about Israel isn’t it sir?

David June 11, 2007 12:46 pm (Pacific time)

Attacking Iran would close the straight of Hormuz and greatly reduce the supply of oil to the US and the rest of the world. This is just the thing to do if we want $15.00 gasoline. somehow, I think this is a lot like taking a fine bead on a big toe. On the other hand, I am sure Israel would just love it. Iran is not suffering from a severe military defeat and has not had ten years of crippling sanctions. They are a modern and fairly equipped military power, and I suspect they will not just roll over. We don't seem to have had a lot of success with a country that was crippled. There is a great deal to lose here, and not much to gain. I am still waiting for someone to tell me what we have gained, or truthfully ONE SINGLE THING that is right about our present military adventure. When my children were in grade school, I taught them that in an argument, the first one that hit out, lost.

Bruce June 11, 2007 12:43 pm (Pacific time)

I agree with Mr. Lieberman. Iran is our deadly enemy, and war with them seems inevitable

Tom Nelson June 11, 2007 12:41 pm (Pacific time)

Knoxious, your post is reprinted below for convenience. I'm glad you asked about Israeli criminal activities. I doubt you've traveled to Palestine; I have numerous times. I've seen first hand Israelis shooting at unarmed civilians on peaceful protests (Beit Jala, 2002). I've seen the Wall snaking around Qalqilya that cuts Palestinians off from their farmland inside the Green Line. I witnessed first hand the subjugation of an entire population. I witnessed first hand home demolitions either because Israel would not grant a Palestinian a housing permit or because a relative of a Palestinian not living there engaged in anti-Israeli violence. I witnessed theft of land, resources (water), dumping of Israeli toxic waste in Palestine (near Jayyous), unnecessary and intentional destruction of civilian infrastructure (Bethlehem, digging up of water lines, shooting holes in water tanks on Palestinians' homes). Not to mention targeted killings, checkpoints, and the dropping of American cluster bombs in Lebanon that still today kill and maim innocents. Again, I'm glad you asked. "For too long anti-semitism has been used to bludgeon those who criticize Israel's criminal policies into silence and submission. It ain't happening today" What exactly are these criminal policies of which you speak? Killing palestinians that are trying to kill them? How many disctechs and weddings should they let be blown up before they do something? As much as you dont want to admit it, israel aint going anywhere, unless Iran "blows them off the map" that is. Israel does have a right to exist and has since the land was given to them after World War 1. Unfortunately most arabs and persians, and apparently a bunch of euro's, americans and other, dont feel that way. IMO, I think we should let israel have at it with Iran BEFORE Iran gets a nuke or it can get way too ugly.

Scorpio June 11, 2007 12:23 pm (Pacific time)

Etonhurst...Forgive me, I meant the IAEA, International Atomic Energy Agency. You know...the one that Iran refuses to cooperate with. Yeah, you knew it, but you just had to be a jerk. And what part of PROXY war do you not understand. Or is your skull so thick that you dont get the concept. There is no denying that Iran is causing trouble in the region. They have quite a history of it, a history which I read using news sources all over the world, all different points of view yada yada yada. Do you sympathize with Iran? Do you feel that they are innocent of accusations like being state sponsors of terrorism. Do you feel women should be harrased or even jailed because they are showing too much hair? How about the hostage crisis that Carter managed so well, were the Iranians being our friends then? The harder the US trys to make peace, the harder the Iranians push back. We open lines of diplomacy, Iran takes hostages. Come on, how can you possibly justify Iran imprisioning a Nobel laureat who is a peace activist? You can't.

Mike June 11, 2007 12:22 pm (Pacific time)

As a nutmegger (someone from Connecticut), all I can do in re Lieberman is quote Richard Clarke, "I failed you. We tried hard, but that doesn't matter because we failed. And for that failure, I would ask for your understanding and for your forgiveness."

dsinc June 11, 2007 12:08 pm (Pacific time)

Sooner or later Iran will have to be confronted. Hitting their oil refineries and blockading the tankers delivering fuel will bring about a regime change, and then make it unnecessary for them to wipe Israel off the map, and attack America, as Ahmadinejad has openly stated he will do. Not too many people seem to believe him. I do.

Ezra June 11, 2007 11:51 am (Pacific time)

In response to reefus88's 'argument,' Israel is most certainly not our ally. WE ARE ISRAEL'S ALLY. I see many benefits for Israel through our involvement in this war. I do not see a single benefit for America. But you say, 'What about Islamic fundamentalist terrorists attacking America? Isn't that a U.S. interest in the region?' Ask yourself WHY these fundamentalist attacked the U.S. in the first place. Could it possible be because the U.S. is the force, through Israel's agents in the Senate such as Joe Lieberman, supporting the Israeli state? Why again does a North American nation have any interest in a strip of sand along the Gaza half a world away? Ask yourself.

Tom Nelson June 11, 2007 11:45 am (Pacific time)

Definition, Treason: "2. a violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or to one's state." For too long anti-semitism has been used to bludgeon those who criticize Israel's criminal policies into silence and submission. It ain't happening today.

Wesley Jones June 11, 2007 11:44 am (Pacific time)

I'm with Lieberman. Our interests above all others. Mr. Tim King may have served but maybe he doesn't quite understand WHY we do somethings. The fight has been comming for years and we are the ones that has to fight it.

Keith June 11, 2007 11:42 am (Pacific time)

"By some estimates, (Iranian-trained Iraqis) have killed as many as 200 American soldiers," Lieberman said. He could have said"By some estimates, US has killed close to ONE MILLION INNOCENT IRAQI CITIZENS". Iraq and Iran had nothing to do with 9/11. They have no WMD. Pakistan and Israel have nuclear weapons. Bin Laden is in Pakistan. Pakistan sold nuclear technology to North Korea. Pakistan sent money to those who committed 9/11. Saddam was strongly suppressive of radical Islamists. He was the enemy of al Qaeda. CIA put Saddam in power. Reagan/Bush strongly supported him. Bush gave al Qaeda more than they could ever dream of. He opened up Iraq to them. This would open up Iran to them. This would take gas to $5 per gallon. Bush's gas-selling buddies would love this. Look for a naval "incident" involving Iran and US giving Bush his justification for an attack--like the Lusitania, the Maine, and the Maddox. This illegal war based on lies will cost Americans $2.3 Trillion and according to 16 intelligence agencies of the US, has made us less safe.

Chris June 11, 2007 11:42 am (Pacific time)

Grow up people. Lieberman is correct when it comes to Iran. As for the author of this "story" I can get better insight into the world today from a second grader.

Mark June 11, 2007 11:38 am (Pacific time)

Another warmonger that needs to go. Iran even with a nuclear weapon is no threat to the US. To me it seems some Americans (many on this post) have lost their minds and I highly recommend therapy. Since when did we become the world police?? We need to remember, there isn't a country in the world that wants the US to mingle in their affairs. I think we should get our house in order first.

reefus88 June 11, 2007 11:37 am (Pacific time)

"When, oh when, will the United States stop putting Israel's interests above its own? I think the Senator's comments border on treason." Their interests are our own, THEY ARE OUR ALLY. Just like England, Australia and numerous other countries. I honestly wonder how different people opinions would be if instead of jews it was a bunch of aussies or englishmen that the leader of Iran said he wanted to blow of the map. I had no clue anti semitism was so alive and kicking in this world. And I think yo need to look up the definition of treason.......

Anonymous June 11, 2007 11:36 am (Pacific time)

It is unbelievable that Joe Lieberman still has the grass to tell his Connecticut constituency he is supporting their interests by advocating war in Iraq and now Iran. This entire series of events, including 9/11, had it's origin in Americans like Joe Lieberman putting the interests of Israel before the interests of the United States. Why do we, as Americans, care what happens between Palestine and Israel? It is, or at least should be, a regional conflict without any genuine interests for America. Now we have to watch another batch of 19 year olds plucked out of Omaha to die in some far off desert for Israel's interests and stabilization. The actions of Joe Lieberman are tantamount to treason. That is, a U.S. Senator is supporting the interests of a foreign nation at the clear detriment of the United States and all Western nations.

reefus88 June 11, 2007 11:30 am (Pacific time)

My family already has, his name is Philip Martini: http://iraq.pigstye.net/article.php/MartiniPhilipJ Once again ANOTHER person making assumptions. And I love how free speech only seems to apply to people who agree with you- HYPOCRITE!!!! I have long regretted my decision to vote for Bush in 2000. However, I have been rethinking that regret because Gore chose Lieberman as a running mate. In retrospect, believe it or not, I think I made the right decision.

John Carter June 11, 2007 11:29 am (Pacific time)

I just love it when folks justify agression by claiming doing so against WW2 era Germany or Japan would have revised history. Of COURSE it would have. Then probably none of us would have been born. Wasn't the middle east and the rest of the world supposed to have been cooked to a radioactive cinder when Pakistan became nuclear capable? What do you think would happen if Iran USED a nuclear weapon? Think the rest of the nuclear powers are gonna sit back and say, "Oh Jeez, now they've done it, please pass the sweet and sour shrimp?" You think that they can churn these thinks out like Kias or something? What are they going to deploy, two 5,000,000 megaton nukes? Ever consider that all the hoopla is because once Iran has a nuke capability they can DEFEND themselves a little better?

Tom Nelson June 11, 2007 11:25 am (Pacific time)

When, oh when, will the United States stop putting Israel's interests above its own? I think the Senator's comments border on treason.

John Doe June 11, 2007 11:19 am (Pacific time)

This is Mr. Lieberman wanting to use the US military to do Israel's dirty work. We are already doing Israel's dirty work in Iraq.

JohnJ June 11, 2007 11:17 am (Pacific time)

I personally teach my kids that if a situation escalates to violence, than you failed, because violence is a sign of weakness, NOT strength. The guy who has to throw a punch is the one who has run out of arguments and solutions. (For all you who keep a picture of Jesus with an AK47) that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t DEFEND yourself. So neo-con-chicken Joe wants to drop bombs, and that will end the problem? No troops or follow-up required; Iran will just say: “OK, OK were sorry, you dropped some bombs so we must be wrong, we give up, you are superior in every way”! Sounds like Libby and Wolfie’s description of how the war in Iraq was going to go. Humiliating your enemy IS NOT the way to keep them calm and cooperative; especially in the more primitive societies like Iran, the Arab states, and the office of the vice president. Face is more important to them than life itself. (Look how many mistakes the OVP allows the administration to admit to; zero.) Research the “6 day war” and see how the Arabs (and Persians) reacted to being defeated. We are still paying for their defeat today, since that only made them worse. (That is NOT meant as a criticism of Israel winning the war; just an example of how it didn’t do much good in the long run). Also look up the neo-con manifesto; Iran is the next phase they’ve had planned all along.

JN- Portland June 11, 2007 11:16 am (Pacific time)

Replace Lieberman with Bush and it sounds more like the truth, although Lieberman and Bush are best buddies.

liz benard June 11, 2007 11:12 am (Pacific time)

Joe has always represented Israeli interests. However, he and the other NEOCONS- BUSH, Cheney, Wolfowitz are what I have referred to as "chicken hawks"- they never served in Vietnam and yet so cavalierly have orchestrated a war in Iraq resulting in the death of 3,500 American youth and the maiming of many more. Yesterday, I went to Arlington West where 3,500 crosses are planted on Santa Monica Beach. Please stop this march to war with Iran before it begins...

Etonhurst June 11, 2007 11:10 am (Pacific time)

I just read "scorpio"'s comment. I have never read such utter rubbish in all my days. "Iran is acting in violation of IRNA"? The Islamic Republic News Agancy? Is this guy for real? And it appears 'Scorpio' has looked in to that nation's soul, Iran that has not attacked a country since the 14th century and come back with the hysterical notion that Iran wants to wage war against the west! Pipe down, for goodness sake. Israel's facilitators are surely rooting for this nightmare that'll engulf the entire planet. Sleepwalking in to a war with Iran will be the very height of stupidity!

Jason June 11, 2007 11:04 am (Pacific time)

Wow! my head hurts.

Howard June 11, 2007 11:04 am (Pacific time)

I don't fault Lieberman for advocating an attack on Iran because it is a danger to the world. The argument is that it would use nuclear weapons if it had them. Very possible. But if the US launches a pre-emptive nuclear attack on Iran, we should be absolutely certain they have are about to have nukes. Otherwise, it is another Iraq. One more thing, all you people not wanting to send their sons there..who sid we need a ground invasion if we set back their nuke program 20 years?

Fabio Escobar June 11, 2007 10:43 am (Pacific time)

So what do you want, Tim King? Do you only want warriors to make decisions about whether to go to war? Perhaps you wouldn't even allow generals to make these decisions, since they rarely venture into combat. This argument is poor. To appreciate why it fails, consider this: your argument would leave the nation with front-line troops (and perhaps veterans) being the only ones allowed to decide whether to send the nation into conflict. Where's the logic in that, Mr. King? Isn't this a republic where civilians make war decisions, and not the warriors themselves?

Mark June 11, 2007 10:38 am (Pacific time)

bunch of left wing idiots here. One thing Iran would love to do more than destroy Israel......destroy USA.

joe June 11, 2007 10:38 am (Pacific time)

72 Million people died in WW-II because we had our head in the sand and Europe embraced "appeasement". I don't understand how can people can forget this. When it comes to dealing with evil, shoot first, ask questions later.

JJ June 11, 2007 10:37 am (Pacific time)

I hope that Mr. Lieberman's children and grandchildren will be enlisted in his fight and be on the frontlines. The war with Iraq was a complete falsehood from the beginning. Oh, we're trying to get those Weapons of Mass Destruction. Then, oops no weapons, so suddenly it became Operation Iraqi Democracy Freedom for those poor undemocratic Iraquis. Mr. Lieberman fails to disclose that the USA toppled the Iran democracy in 1953 for oil companies. May God have mercy on Joe Liberman's unrepentant soul.

chris adams June 11, 2007 10:34 am (Pacific time)

I'm not interested in my children paying for an old man's delusions. Shut your mouth Joe.

Anonymous June 11, 2007 10:34 am (Pacific time)

Hey LIEberman, would you ever LIE to the american people on behalf of your true master? To kill is easy and so clean; especially when we can use air strikes. What do you think happens to people who have to clean up the mess? Humans who now have to bury their family members? Do you think they would want to go back to potato farming or whatever else they did? If you were in their shoes what would you do? What did israel do to the hapless Lebanese? Heres a clue: 1 million unexploded bombs left to kill and maim for decades to come. AND if any of those Lebanese who lose children because of these international crimes Israel committed, decide to come looking for you JOE - the question is not who is to blame but where are you going to hide? In USA or Israel?

Bob P. June 11, 2007 10:32 am (Pacific time)

For your info twerp, I served in Vietnam, two terms and it was a bulls--t war then the same way it is now. And after I buried my son two years ago and my nephew last year I can damn well say whatever the hell I want to a coward like you. My son and nephew went when the lies hadn't been exposed yet. It's a sad day when wolf in sheep clothing try to lead our sons and daughter to slaughter for the sake of isreal. Liberman and all his kids are dual citizens of isreal. They benefit the most from this instability. People should wake up. What we've done in iraq is create the next 50-100 years of people who want our destruction. What do you think the kids of all the soldiers we've killed want to do? Do you think they want to thank you and share lemonade? We've killed over a million iraqis and their and our number is growing daily. Was this the mission accomplished that we all wanted? This coward should stay in isreal and shut up. God bless american since we have all these idiots aroud trying to destroy it.

Proving once again that certain politicians in America hold loyalty first to Israel. If you question it, you are deemed instantly as 'anti-semitic.' If you even discuss it in the halls of corporate America, you are penalized. Even if you attempt to show factual material that provides direct evidence of Israel's stranglehold on U.S. foreign policy, YOU WILL BE GAGGED. Same as if you attempt to show how oil companies lobbied our government to invade IRAQ, or any other material that exposes wholesale corporate war-prostituting in America. I should know, because I have payed the price.

EJFINEART June 11, 2007 9:57 am (Pacific time)

There are too many Zionists in our government, and their efforts are to benefit Israel, and not the USA, Senator Joe Lieberman is just another Israeli citizen acting the part of a US Senator. Using a seat in the US government to do the business of another country is a Crime.

Yep. We get what we ask for. More War. More War Machine. More Money for War. More death and destruction for War. More suffering for War. You only really think of it for yourself when your son is dead, your daughter is dead, your missing your legs or arms or eyes. There are very good alternatives that even Iran, Iraq, Korea, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela will actually become participants. It takes a higher intelligence to create peace and abundance out of any given situation. It takes only a lower form of intelligence based in fear, aggression, hatred, resentment and rage to create war. It doesn't have to be a Cold War or a Bloody War. It actually can be a stand for Peace and Prosperity for ALL people, including everyone that currently fears and hates everyone else. It is an alternative and higher solution, and it is actually available at all times, even now. For starters all of us might let go of the past. Real big order for all of the religions and politicians of the world. Again, takes some intelligence, committment, and a higher vision for what is available for humanity. Inciting more war will likely get you more war. Is that really, really what you want? Most every soldier I know that has seen the face of war never wants to see it again. The ones that past on because of it, and their familes and friends surely never will. We have already done that to a LOT of people, mostly unheard of at this point because of our restrained media. We have gone from a country that inspires freedom, peace, prosperity and equality to one that many hate and fear: Lieberman's statements promulgate more of this. We have yet to experience much "war" in our country, where bombs are blowing up our cities, our children, our buildings into rampant horror -- it's very possible -- do you really want to incite this? The peace that Christ promises, that Mohammed promises, that Buddha promises, that Khrisna promises, that Ghandi promises is not consistent what Lieberman, Bush, or any of the other war extremists are saying, and justifying it with a "holy" or "righteous" war concept. Humanity, and each of us as individuals, deserve much more than this type of vision these people are offering. This is not leadership. It is truly archaic ignorance. If we truly want a higher level of existence, let's have higher level thinking, and much, much better leadership towards that vision. The time for that is now. If there is to be a revolution anywhere, it should begin with an evolution toward the authentic democracy and stand for freedom, beauty, equality, and prosperity for ALL people that the United States of America is supposed to be about, as an inspiration, not as a force of war, terror, and domination. (Doesn't that sound much more like what you are making the Iranians to be, or Hitler, or an common violent criminal?)

re Scorpio June 11, 2007 9:19 am (Pacific time)

As an Austrailian I will offer the following observations: USA has used the A-bomb on Japan. Israel has nukes. Irael has chemical weapons - which they used on palestinian villagers (as admitted by retired chief of israeli army - they poisened the wells of villages they wanted to evacuate during the 1940s). Iraq never did have nukes but Iraq did have USA supplied chemical weapons. Iraq supplied by the USA bombed Iran with chem weapons in the Iraq/Iran war; Iran was also supplied with chemical weapons (probably Russia). Iran, however, did not retaliate with them - claiming the use of chemicals in warfare is unethical. By the way, as much as Irans president wishes, he does NOT control the military of IRAN. The military is controlled by a committe of 50 PhD's (islamic studies - not-withstanding) mullahs. Again, I know we hate the mullas, but be honest with yourself - they didnt use chemical weapons on a country that invaded them and used all kinds of weapons on their population because of ethics! It would serve America immensely if a class in ethics was mandated for its politicians.

Mike S. said "reefus, stick it ok. Your kind makes the rest of america stink. reefus88? so what if there were a million jews in Iran for centuries? There were millions of jews in Europe too? but I never heard of any gas chambers in Iran... just like you and joe-boy, obvious jews, bite the hand that feeds you. On second thought, let me tell you were all those millions of jews around the world went; they are all now in vegetable garden kibutz's on stolen land. Broken land? just because you set up some little organic vegetable gardens and hemp cloth weaving factories on stolen land. Look carefully, and you will see olive groves (acres of them) centuries old on the "broken land." Look past the screen setup by your holy angelican priests and flawed media people - expand your mind - view the stained glass from both sides.

Leiberman is a coward he has no regard for the lives of Americans, he cares about Israel, if he wants to do that he should join APIAC stop pretending to represent America. There are NO generals that are willing to go ahead with such a crazy and self-destructive attack, Israel have nukes and other weapons they'll be fine.

The world is changing, it always has and always will. Technology is pushing our planet into globalization, we are in the midst of a paradigm shift of world power. No longer is military might alone enough to discourage potential foes from behaving badly. The new weapon is oil and the target is the world economy. Iran will ultimatly be responsible for a larger war. Right now Iran is involved in several proxy wars, kidnapping US and other foreign citizens and in defiance of IRNA, continues to develop the capability to enrich uranium far beyond what they would need for their so called "peacefull use to generate electricity. Myself included, I do not think anyone actually WANTS to go to war with any nation. It is however the nature of our species to resort to violence when all other avenues of a reasonable outcome have been exhausted. When a dispute becomes and unreconsilable conflict war is the only solution. The world is trying desperatly to resolve the Iranian issue peacefully. A war with Iran right now would be terrible for the US and for the world. However, the price of doing nothing now could very well develop into a conflict with a much higher pricetag, economicaly and in human suffering and loss. Hitler could have been stopped before he murdered millions, imagine if the maniac had nukes. Iran has to be dealt with sooner or later, sooner would be much better. It wont be ideal or pleasant, but when faced with the alternitave; dealing with a nuclear armed Iran in the future, time is of the essence. All you peace activists out there, stop screaming at your president and recognize there is a real threat to peace out there much much larger than the current conflicts. Iran must stand down, release the western political prisioners, stop interfering with US operations in the region and allow IRNA inspectors to do their jobs. The outcome of the impending conflict with Iran will shape the worlds economic landscape. Iran intends to destroy western civilization, economicaly and diplomaticaly and militarily when the time comes. The clock is ticking and no one knows exactly when the bomb will go off but one thing is certain, with the current regieme in Iran refusing to negotiate, well....tick tock tick tock.....It's like the deadliest game of chicken ever.

We have many problems that need to be resolved and appeasement and ignoring (ignorance) make them worse. My uncle served in nam. So go ahead and make more ASSumptions about me or if I served. LOL, evengelical, yeah thats me..... Guess who DIDNT vote for bush? Guess who wouldnt vote for lieberman??? Sorry people, not everyone that supports israel fits in some snug category-or even likes the jews for that matter. Unfortunatly for you tho, they are our ALLY and unless you're french (or possibly canadian) you dont turn your back on your allies or friends-at least that's how I was raised on the south Side of Chicago.... Isael was not STOLEN land, seriously, EDUCATE yourself on the topic. The land was lost by the PERSIAN EMPIRE after WW1-you know the war in which they joined the NAZIS instead of the ALLIES??? Google "belfour declaration" The Persains chose the wrong side and what was done with the land after the war is THEIR FAULT, especially not ours, since it was FRANCE and GREAT BRITAIN that gave them the land. After that, jews starting moving in, fixing up and buying much of the land. The slowly, the persains that left tried reclaiming the land. Jews killed persians and persians killed jews for a few dedcades unitl about 1967 when Israel delcared its independence, upon which the six day war began. Since then those pesrians have become "Palestinians" Man, must suck for you in your infinte knowledge to be schooled in history by a 27 year old...... Now continue with the insults and ASSumptions about me.....

By the way, henry kissassinger wrote a letter of recommendation for that crook libby and spoke about libbys kids. Anybody remember that Valarie Plame also has kids???

windrider June 11, 2007 8:32 am (Pacific time)

Iran wants what virtually every country in the Middle East (except Israel) wants: for the US to stop meddling in their internal affairs. Iran has every reason to hate the US, beginning with our CIA-engineered overthrow of a freely elected democratic government in 1953 and placing a vicious, murderous monarch back on the throne (the Shah of Iran), then arming and training his secret police that made Saddam and his sons look like choirboys, then continuing to try to destabilize and overthrow the current regime even though Iran has one of the most open and fair election systems in the entire region (that doesn't mean all Iranians support the mullahs, but they have good reason to hate and fear America more). The notion that only Israel can be allowed to prosper and rule with power in the Middle East means that all other nations of the region are inherently "our enemies" and are not allowed to have alliances or receive arms or funding from anyone without our permission. Well, the people of the Middle East clearly have other ideas about their own destiny and they are making their alliances when and where they can, and that includes Iran. Because we have bullied, manipulated and interfered with Iran for more than 50 years, Iran has EVERY RIGHT IN THE WORLD to develop a nuclear deterrent against our bullying. The notion that bombing Iran will make things better in the Middle East is sheer madness and serves no one's interests but Israel's. And does Lieberman think the rest of the world will simply stand idly by while America commits yet another act of war and aggression against a third Muslim state in the Middle East when we've already shown ourselves so singularly incompetent at defeating our opponents in Afghanistan and Iraq? I bloody well doubt it. Bomb Iran and the rest of the world will shun us, and we will have NO ALLIES to advance our other interests in the rest of the world. Lieberman is a madman and he should be removed from power, along with Bush, Cheney, and the rest of the zionist lackeys in the administration.

Go Gettum Tiger June 11, 2007 8:23 am (Pacific time)

Maybe some of you should look at the picture here, Iran has wanted to dominate the Middle East for years and the U.S. took out their biggest enemy in Iraq. Now if Iran can get control over Iraq they will dominate the Middle East and all the Oil. You right wing loosers who voted for Bush should shut the hell up!! Iraq did absolutely nothing to warrent the unlawful overtaking their country took, the U.S. was totally in the wrong to do what they did and their lies have caught up to them and now we are a joke to the international community and I am one American who doesn't really like being hated for a President that I didn't vote for! Secondly, if Iran does get nuclear weapons this little bollock of a blog will be a joke because we will all be held accountable and Iran will hold the entire world hostage to their own desires. I say Joe's right, lets take Iran out while we still have a chance cuz if they get a nuke the chance will be gone! Is that what you guys like Michael S and Bob P want; Iran to have a nuke?

Rainbow June 11, 2007 8:12 am (Pacific time)

The article is very expressive and to the point. I share the writer's view, and I do not speak as one who is sitting on the sidelines. My husband gave the military 30 years of his life before passing away as the result of a service connected injury, and my daughter has recently returned from S.Korea with the military. I wholeheartedly disagree with Lieberman, and I love the Jewish people, too.

Lieberman is a voice of courage and logic in a wilderness of whiners. What did you say when voices called for bombing Germany and Japan in 1941? At times it is necessary to use military force to overturn the status of the corrupt and crazy. E.g., The American Civil War, World War II, Afghanistan. There are more, there will be more.

RG June 11, 2007 7:51 am (Pacific time)

This article is stupid. Iran is openly pursuing nuclear weapons. Even conservative estimates put them at the longest 5 years away from a nuclear weapon. In addition they have been the strongest supporters of State sponsored terrorism on the planet. That is an undisputable fact. You don’t need 20 years of marine history to know that. They openly fund and aid the hizbollah and al mehdi army in Iraq. Why are we even arguing about that, Iran admits it loudly? You don’t need to “venture to the area’s” to find out about Iran’s involvement in supporting the hamas, hizbollah or the al mehdi shia groups in Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq. To discount his accusations because he didn’t physically see monies or weapons transferred is asinine. Not only has Iran supported financially and logistically multiple terriorist groups, they have openly attacked the united states in the middle east media. The continue to encourage violence and chaos in to American interest all over the world. With nuclear weapons, the will threaten the stability of world peace and our way of life. So quit putting your head in the sand, and realize the threat before its too late.

Paul June 11, 2007 7:45 am (Pacific time)

That a way Joe. Let's get those monsters before they get us.

paollucci June 11, 2007 7:45 am (Pacific time)

Paollucci: June 11, 2007 I agree one hundred percent that Liberman is only looking for the interest of the state of the zionists. I bet if he could he would bomb the whhole meddle east just to please the zionist state of israel. And yes, unfortunately, our boys and girls are dying for the interest of israel. The israeli lobby must be giving away lots of green to this mad man liberman. Many people in America don't know that 3 billion dollars are given to israel as an aid. Israel is allowed to keep and do whatever they want with the 75% of that money the other 25 percent goes to the jewish lobby wich is destributed as thei feel like to all the politicians that serves the interest of israel in the senate and congress. But all other nations that the USA gives aids to must keep only 25% of the money and must spend 75% of it to purchase arms and other US products. That goes to tell you that most, if not all the politicians are in the zionist pockets. If countries like US, Russia, india Israel, Pakistan, UK, China, France and few other have the right to have nuclear energy, why not Iran. Iran is not qualified to have nukes beacause of the Zionist nation close by. Thats all Bull. They have the same right as all the other. US, and Israel is just out accupy and control other countries as they see fit.

Jack June 11, 2007 7:44 am (Pacific time)

why are we in Iraq? We gain absolutely nothing and killed many more Iraqis than Saddam ever did. We invaded a sovereign nation. Saddam was the only guy capable of ruling that country (which, btw, was the most sophisticated country besides Israel in the Middle East). Think what we could've done w/ all those billions of dollars here in the U.S. Now Leiberman wants to waste more money and lives only to motivate more terrorist to get here and F___ us.

reefus88 June 11, 2007 7:43 am (Pacific time)

"And if you are 48 years old or younger, then why aren't you over there?" And if you are so anti-war and anti US or what we have done, WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE? pack up and move to Iran if you feel so bad for them. I hear there's a bunch of land in canada..... You, in your apparent old age, seem to have forgoten a few things. Sadaam invaded a sovereign nation. Sadaam, while in kuwait, fired 8 missles into Israel in order to try and draw them into war. MOST importantly tho it seems you have forgotten a most basic war tactic-The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Maybe that's why we helped sadaam in the 80's??? Maybe that is why Iran is helping the insurgents NOW??? Maybe we are Irans enemy? Yeah, I LOVE it when my enemy has nukes.....cold war..... Only the Iranian leaders are stupid and CRAZY enough to actually launch one, unlike the russians.

Branko R June 11, 2007 7:35 am (Pacific time)

Sen. Liberman is a moral monster who has no problems advocating horrible, painful deaths for hundreds of civilians. Because that's the minimal outcome of an aerial attack on Iran. And what for? For unsubstantiated allegations that Iran is behind some of the American military deaths in Iraq? Think of the evidence required for a death row case, and compare that to the "evidence" Lieberman wants to use to sentence the inevitable "collateral damage" victims to death. People with families like you and me. Does Sen. Lieberman want to protect the lives of US servicemen and women? Then get them out of Iraq! They're attacking us because we're over there. Can anyone deny that? Sen. Liebermam, for advocating the invasion and occupation of Iraq, bears far more responsibility for the deaths of American soldiers in Iraq than any of the hundreds of Iranian civilians his new policy would inevitably kill and maim. I'm ashamed that Sen. Lieberman is a member of my government.

Jack armstrong June 11, 2007 7:35 am (Pacific time)

Why is it our leaders are such idiots? Leiberman is jewish whose interests are aligned w/ Bush and the crazy evangelists: they hope to bring about armaggedon. Why don't we use their tactics against them: create terrorist groups in Iran? (w/o saying anything) and disrupt their interference. It's cheap, effective, politically expedient...

Brian June 11, 2007 7:31 am (Pacific time)

The senator is correct. As unpopular as it may be. Iran wants the destruction of the west. The US included. I am willing to be the first over there. Action now could save millions of lives. A failure to act is percieved as weakness and cowardly. A failure to act encourages agression. I hate to say it, but this is a world governed by the use of force. Since we can't all just sing around the campfire and get along, we need to stand strong. If we don't, in 50 years all our kids will be attending manatory executions of those violating islamic law, or girls will be forced into burkas, and you will have to lay out your prayer mat 5 times a day to avoid getting your head loped off. Action or inaction now will resonate through history.

Bob P. June 11, 2007 7:30 am (Pacific time)

Seems that we have a young group commenting. Does anyone remember when it was US weapons given to Saddam Hussein to use against the Iranians in the 80's Or US weapons killing Sandinistas in Nicaragua? More than anything in Iraq alone our soldiers are being killed by US weapoins that were given to them to kill Iranians. The nice little weapons package was presented personally to Saddam Hussein by Donald Rumsfeld. It is documented with photographs as it was considered a diplomatic mission! Our weapons kill a lot of people around the world and even here in the US. More likely than not, Iran is boasting and bragging about nuclear capabilities to keep people out. This was the same tactic that Hussein used. The only weapons of mass destruction he had were those we gave him and were obsolete by 2003. For anyone in favor of starting yet another war in the middle east, you obviously do not have a child or relative over there. And if you are 48 years old or younger, then why aren't you over there?

Theodore Lopez June 11, 2007 7:22 am (Pacific time)

So just what would justify an attack on Iran? Iran has provided aid and sanctuary to enemies of the United States, has illegally captured British soldiers, sent small military forces on cross boarder skirmishes. There is no denying that That, my fellows, it was is what used to be known as "acts of war". If its peace in our time you want be my guest and make nice to homophobic-women hating- stalinistic-religious extremists and the states they run (no I'm not talking about Israel or the United States as you might suspect). But tthe Iranians have to know that we won't stand idly by while they cause mischief. There is nothing wrong with saying a military attack is an option, in fact perhaps if more countries were willing to publically warn Iran then maybe we wouldn't have to worry about Iran churning out nukes (and who do you suspect will be on the top of the list of targets for those nukes even if we make nice with the regime? Canada?)

Go Gettum Tiger June 11, 2007 7:20 am (Pacific time)

I agree with Joe to a certain point, what is the international community going to do about Iran and their open refusal to the international community's wishes? If we all sit around an wait...Iran will have nuclear weapons and then it will be too late. If you believe your sons and daughters could be killed by another war confrontation just think about how many people will be killed once Iran has a nuclear weapon? It's quite obvious the Bush administration are morons and what the U.S. needs is someone that won't take crap from the international community and as the top world power the U.S. really should give Iran an ultimatum...either quit the uranium enrichment process within 90 days or we bomb the crap out of you! I think it's a great idea and the only idea left that will work!

Ray S. June 11, 2007 7:18 am (Pacific time)

So, Mr King basically says he believes what Iran says (i.e. not supporting Iraqi insurgents) and does not believe what Mr. Lieberman says (i.e. that they are). Wow, Mr King, you really have your allegiances screwed up. If you lived in 1940, you'd probably be telling us the death camps didn't exist and the Jews were living in 5-star hotels!

reefus88 June 11, 2007 7:13 am (Pacific time)

Typical anti-semtie garbage from a brainwashed lib. And no, I'm not jewish and I'm not very fond of them myself....

Steve June 11, 2007 7:02 am (Pacific time)

Agree with the article. Disagree with those comments above that seem to support war on Iran because Iranina weapons are used to kill US soldiers. According to the International Herald Tribune (and others) today the USA is currently arming both Sunni and Shia militias in Iraq in return for intelligence. Undoubtedly, some of these weapons will end up being used to kill US troops. When this happens, following the logic of some of these posts and some of the neocons, does this mean that the USA ought to declare war on itself? Of course, some would argue it already has...

wannabe June 11, 2007 7:01 am (Pacific time)

Baby killers in state of Israel are root of all evils in Middle East, and that is reason we are in Iraq to serve their interest. Mr. Lieberman shame, you should be ashamed of yourself trying to feed American people bunch of garbage. According to your statement 200 of American may have been killed by Iranian trained insurgent, then who killed the other 3300 of our brave men and women who are being place their to serve the state of Israel interest. Remember Mr. Lieberman I am pay $3.50 per Gallon for gas. Gas is not it. Iraq is Gone now, now you are campaigning to destroy Iran. Not cause you love American, cause you and baby killers in state of Israel think that Iran possess a danger to state of Israel. Mr Lieberman, it is all about Israel isn’t it sir?

As a retired soldier who saw more war than he wanted to, I have a difficult time seriously considering widening the present conflict. We may, in fact, have to deal with Iran militarilly one day. But I think such talk is pre-mature and takes the focus off the existing mission. Support our troops and what they do! That would help alot.

Much as I dislike having George Bush as President, I voted for him in the first election because Joe Lieberman was on the ticket as Vice President, and I couldn't have him be a heartbeat away from the presidency. He doesnn't represent Conn. or the U.S., he is a Jew whose roots are in Isreal. Get him out of the way before he hurts someone.

george June 11, 2007 6:34 am (Pacific time)

im with ya joe!!! actually lets not attack, i would love to see these peoples faces 10yrs from now, lets pull out of iraq too...

It is you who is the coward, Mr. King. Keeping your liberal head in the sand will no-doubt end with a mushroom-shaped cloud over the rest of us. You liberals will never move an inch to avoid responsibility for our future generations; you're too concerned that someone might get hurt or have their morning Starbucks interrupted. Given a chance, Islamist Iranians would flood even our country with their newfound nuclear bombs strapped to their waists while you complacent chickens sit around crowing about their civil rights. Grow up pay attention to the realities of human nature.

Senator Joe Liberman is the only sentor with a backbone on this issue. I wish more of our senator's and congressmen and women would have a backbone like Senator Liberman. We should not tolerate Iran's (or Syrian) interference any longer.

rockyh77 June 11, 2007 6:32 am (Pacific time)

Tim states: “The biggest problem is that Iran denies what it is being accused of”. He is correct in this on so many ways. But chief is that the leaders of Iran can not be trusted. It is my understanding our S.O.G. are once again authorized to make political assassinations. Taking down the leadership of “terrorist” nations by our elite Special Operations Group is what should have been done in Iraq and is what should have been done in Iran. I have been in Iraq and it is a shameful tragedy that we in the US should learn from.

wannabe June 11, 2007 6:29 am (Pacific time)

It is not about Iraq or American soldiers, it is all about the baby killers in State of Israel. What does Joe is thinking like he cares for American Soldiers. He voted for war that was based on lies and deceptions. Get real if you care for America and American soldiers, and then bring our men and women home. Start serving American not Israelis Mr. Lieberman, what is good for Israel not necessarily good for Americans

reefus88 June 11, 2007 6:25 am (Pacific time)

What a bunch of crap. I don't even like lieberman but it's a widely known FACT that IRANIAN arms, some made as early as 2007, are killing our soldiers. Iran's leader has said he wants to "blow Israel and it's ALLIES off the map" Not sure if Mr. King knows this or not, but get this, WE ARE ONE OF IT'S ALLIES. Iran is actively seeking to enrich uranium past a point which it can be used for industrial purposes-wonder why? Only reason you do that is to make a nuke. People need to learn from history, Hitler could have been stopped much earlier but to many peace-wussy-let's try reasoning with a MADMAN, isolationalists prevented it from happening and millions of lives were lost because of it. It's just so unfortunate that Iran is being run by a complete madman, it's people are actually much different.

Lieberman is a smiling wolf with a hiden agenda that is extremlist danger to our nation. His so called " Amertican interests" serves only a mask for a mission of another country

bloodhound June 11, 2007 6:16 am (Pacific time)

Awesome article.. Joe should sit down and shut up OR have his kids train and be the first to lead a bombing \ ground assault in Iran. It is difficult for most rational people to send others to war in any capacity but to send your own kids you would have to know what your fighting for.

Barry June 11, 2007 6:13 am (Pacific time)

I disagree with Lieberman. Maybe Joe should come to my house and give me a little slap, not a fight, just a slap. Let's see what happens.

Jeff June 11, 2007 6:02 am (Pacific time)

does he represent Israel interests in the senate?
