Police Say Renter Pulled Pistol on Deputies Serving Eviction Notice

The man was taken to Portland Adventist Hospital.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - An Oregon man reportedly pulled a gun on deputies serving an eviction notice this morning and then turned suicidal. It is a sad story and the way it developed was called an unusual turn of events.

Deputies in Multnomah County Sheriff's Office were serving an eviction around 10:00 AM at the Mountain View Apartments on SE Division Street when 62-year old Kenneth F. Danneman pulled a gun out from his rear pocket, according to reports.

Deputy Travis Gullberg, Public Information Officer with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, said "Deputies were able to quickly gain control of Mr. Danneman before he could use the weapon on himself or others."

Deputies Rick Coufal and Mike Heffernan were the deputies present, Gullberg says. "The tenant answered the front door, and as the deputies were explaining the eviction process he put his right hand behind his back."

Gullberg says that is when Deputy Heffernan focused his attention on the tenant's hand, and proceeded to enter the apartment with Deputy Coufal.

"Deputy Heffernan saw a piece of silver metal in the tenant's right rear pocket, immediately after which the individual pulled the pistol out of his pocket and pointed it towards his own head. Deputy Heffernan ripped the gun out of Mr. Danneman's hand and both Deputies immediately gained control of Mr. Danneman and his weapon."

Kenneth Danneman was later taken to Portland Adventist Hospital on a police hold after stating that he was suicidal.

An eviction isn't a suprise. They get plenty of notice when they don't pay their rent. Why should the landlord have to reserve an apartment for someone who's not paying for it? And your idea about moving the man to a safe dignified place?? Sounds nice in theory, but who's going to pay for this? And remember, it's not just this one man, but thousands of people that are served eviction notices. Are we suppose to house all of them too? Who is supposed to pay for this? If I were you, I'd think about those deputies that did a good job. They could have justifiably shot the man but instead they used great restraint and took him to the hospital for a mental evaluation. And who paid for that? Us...the taxpayers! And think about the families of those deputies. Think about how their spouses and kids felt when they returned home from work that day. They were just doing their job and the man had plenty of notice.

Great Country....throw a 62 year old man out of his home without moving him to a safe dignified place and people are surprised at his anger. He should get an award for temper control.
