(SPRINGFIELD, Ore.) - Over 100 motorcycle riders showed up this week to pay their respects to a couple that died as a result of a car versus motorcycle crash on the Oregon coast May 17th. (see: Woman Dies in Motorcycle Crash North of Florence). The man riding the bike, Robert Ellis Shimp, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was 63-years old. Robert survived for several days but ultimately died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. His wife, Nancy Ann Shimp who was 75, died at the scene. The man and wife that passed away several days apart following a motorcycle crash on the Oregon coast, were both laid to rest Sunday, and they were significantly honored by the motorcycle organizations that accompanied the service. Q Madp of IraqWarHeroes.org was on hand to photograph the event and shared the images with Salem-News.com for a number of purposes. The most important reason is to honor this couple and show the bond that exists between veterans and motorcycle riders. The other thing we both hope to do is remind drivers in Oregon and everywhere else that summer is nearly upon us and with that comes an increased number of motorcycles on the road. Drivers need to always remember that bikes are harder to see than cars. Bob Shimp was active with motorcycle groups and lived to ride. The Patriot Guard Riders, Christian Motorcycle Association and others came to bid farewell and also many stood on the flag line. Q even brought extra flags for people who attended, in an effort to maximize their show of support for this veteran and his wife. The event was held at the Twin Rivers Baptist Church in Springfield Oregon Sunday at 2:00 PM. He noted that, "The church was packed and some people were even seated in the main hall. And many where on the flag line." Robert Ellis Shimp died on May 27th 2008. He was born October 14th 1944 in Portland Oregon. Nancy Ann Shimp died on May 17th 2008. She was born April 25th 1933 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Those who knew and loved them say they will be sorely missed. Here is a quick video presentation with images of the couple, the service and the show of support that was present. For more information about veterans who died serving their country and those who served and died later, visit IraqWarHeroes.org and remember that Q travels all over the western half of this nation in order to photograph these solemn events for the families. He always needs help, you can donate to his efforts on his Website. Articles for June 2, 2008 | Articles for June 3, 2008 | Articles for June 4, 2008 | Support Salem-News.com: Quick Links

Motorcycles don't have as much protection as cars. I knew Robert personaly and it still hurts that he is dead.

Actualy Pablo, it takes a motorcycle twice as far as a car to stop. read your drivers manual. Less wieght, less rubber on the road.I know, I ride.

Also remember that motorcycles can stop WAY WAY quicker than any car, so NEVER EVER TAILGATE a motorcycle. Leave extra room!

Thank you, Q, for making such a difference! This couple will be remembered by so many, even those who did not know them. And even though I do not ride, I am so very careful around motorcycles! They deserve to be as safe as us. There's no place that important to not take the time to look before changing lanes, and there's no excuse for tailgating a biker.

The video listed the deaths as in March instead of May. Any way, with the nicer weather and summer break coming, more people will be out and about. Drive safely, even if it will make you late. No one dies from being late. Pay attention to the cycles, bikes and people on foot. Drive safe, the life you save may be your own or someone you love!
Editor to K Maldonado: I apologize for that error and we will try to get it corrected!

As gas goes up higher, many more will be riding bikes. So, get a headset or get off the damn cellphone and start seeing motorcycles!!! It could be someone you know but didn't know they had a bike you place in danger or kill!
