Stayton Man Dies From Injuries Sustained in Bicycle Crash

The man was not wearing a helmet and suffered major head injuries.

A 55-year old man has died from injuries sustained Saturday afternoon after falling from his bicycle while riding on shoulder of Highway 22E just east of Stayton.

(STAYTON, Ore. ) - A 55-year old man has died from injuries he sustained Saturday afternoon after falling from his bicycle while riding on shoulder of Highway 22E just east of Stayton. After confirmation from the Multnomah County Medical Examiner that the man died, his name has now been released.

At approximately 3:19 p.m. on Saturday, 55-year-old Leon Wade Hyatt, from Stayton, was riding a bicycle on the eastbound shoulder of Highway 22E near milepost 16. Hyatt's bicycle reportedly ran over a piece of 2x4 wood lying on the pavement, causing him to lose control. Hyatt fell off the bicycle and landed on his face. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious injury.

Oregon State Police, Marion County Sheriff's Office and Stayton Fire District responded to the scene. The man was initially transported by ground ambulance to Santiam Hospital in Stayton.

He was then taken by air ambulance to Oregon Health & Science University where he died from his injuries.
